The Girl From the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag: I’d heard about this book a while ago and needed something quick and light, so I finally read it! I’ve read a few others by the same author, so it was cool to read something else. Overall it’s very very cute and is a quick easy read. The illustrations are beautiful and it’s a very sweet story. The friendships Morgan has with her friends are very nice. The sacrifice at the end was very touching. There is some internalized homophobia, which is sad, but realistic. I also really liked the seals. Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World by Benjamin Alire Saenz: I loved the first Ari and Dante book and was very excited when the sequel came out, and finally got around to reading it. Overall I really enjoyed it, but I was less enthralled in it than the first one. It’s quite different from the first one. It’s more mature. It’s also less sad. Ari has accepted himself and is now trying to find his place in the world. It’s less about internalized homophobia and more about external homophobia and the cruelty of the world. It also talks about the AIDS crisis a fair bit, which makes sense given when it’s set and was important to touch on. It’s terrifying to think about growing up as a young queer person who is just discovering and coming to terms with who you are during the AIDS crisis. There is much more romance in it than the first one and shows more of Ari and Dante’s relationship now that they’ve expressed their feelings to each other. One thing that bugged me a bit was it’s unclear how long after the first book this takes place. That’s a very minor thing though. Overall it was a very nice read. Z nadzieją sięgnęłam więc po kontynuację, która na powrót przeniosła mnie w mury Illumen Hall. Zagadka morderstwa Loli nadal pozostaje nierozstrzygnięta, jednak kolejne tropy zaczynają wskakiwać na swoje miejsce, a rozwiązanie czai się tuż za rogiem. Tajemnicze zaproszenie do Stowarzyszenia Srok, kolejna ofiara mordercy, dokumenty, które kryją w sobie przyszłość akademii i wreszcie czas przepływający przez palce. Jedno jest pewne. W tym roku w Akademii Illumen Hall nie ma miejsca na nudę. Musze przyznać, że od pierwszej strony wsiąknęłam na powrót w tę historię i poczułam, jakbym wracała do siebie. Jest to bezpośrednia kontynuacja pierwszej części i idealnie ją dopełnia. Styl od początku zachwyca lekkością, a kolejne kartki przewracając się same, odkrywając przed nami coraz to nowe rozwiązania, ale jednocześnie rodząc kolejne pytania. Bo kolejne typy na mordercę wypadają bardzo wiarygodnie. Ciężko określić, kto mówi prawdę, a kto próbuje zataić niewygodne fakty. Tak naprawdę cała książka to jazda bez trzymanki, idealnie nadaje się chociażby na maraton czytelniczy, bo jej tempo sprawia, że czyta się ją niesamowicie dynamicznie. W tej części Audrey odsłoniła przede mną nowe oblicze i zaczęłam darzyć ją większą sympatią. Widać jej ogromny rozwój i przemianę z rozpieszczonej amerykanki. Ivy z kolei nie przestała mnie zaskakiwać w tym pozytywnym, ale jednocześnie i negatywnym sensie. Ale więcej nie zdradzę. Po raz kolejny doceniam również brak wyraźnego wątku romantycznego, który w tym przypadku byłby zbędny i odwracał uwagę od ważniejszych wątków. Serię kończę więc z satysfakcją i ogromnym zaskoczeniem. Autorki nie poskąpiły tu zwrotów akcji, których nie dało się przewidzieć i odkryć, które wymiotły mnie w fotel. Ogromnie cieszę się, że seria doczekała się kontynuacji, a w dodatku tak udanej! Za egzemplarz dziękuję @wydawnictwostorylight

I am learning that Goodreads ratings for YA Fantasy novels do not often match up with my rating. And I’m also realizing that a reader choosing to read a book based on marketing phrases creates unmanageable expectations. Tempest of Tea is billed as a comparable title to Six of Crows. It’s billed as perfect for people who love vampire stories, romance, and heists. But this description does Hafsah Faizalis’s book a disservice. Are there vampires in Tempest of Tea? Yes. But the vampire world building is not fully fleshed out and detailed. They are simply part of the world in which Archie, our main female character, survives. I found the ways in which vampires are shown to have a thriving community based on the fringes of society to be intriguing and thought-provoking. And romance in a fantasy novel increasingly means steamy spice, of which there really is not any in this book, so if a romantasy reader chooses this book based on “romance,” they will most likely be disappointed. But I loved the multi-POVs (not easy to do well!) and how romance slowly builds and crashes throughout. And I’m not fond of spice, so this was perfect for me. As for the heist, is it like Six of Crows? Certainly not! Just because there is a heist in Tempest of Tea does not mean it’s Kaz Brekker in female form. This heist is full of intensity, betrayal and things-gone-wrong. It was fantastic with its own angle. The cliffhanger at the end means there will definitely be at least one more book set in White Roaring, and while I am looking forward to seeing how relationships develop and grow, I am hoping for a bit more depth around discrimination and human trade in this world. And I’d really like to see the vampire community move into a more flourishing life! While at the front, she spent her nights memorizing connection codes to stay ahead of the enemy. Her days were spent connecting calls and vital lines between the front lines and bases. Now back in Washington, she works for American Bell Telephone as an operator. One night, just as her shift is ending, she gets a phone call and the caller utters a codeword “Brightwood” that sends her spiraling back to her time in France. She must confront her past and attempt to uncover the secrets that have followed her home. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book faster. I couldn’t put this down. The suspense and the writing easily pulled me in and kept me engaged. I eagerly flipped the pages, trying to figure out who was calling Edda and keeping her on edge. I was on edge while reading it and Monica Hesse is a fantastic writer who engages her readers with each page turned. I didn’t know anything about HR the Hello Girls prior to this story and now I cannot wait to read more about them. Highly recommend this for a unique WWI story. This quote had me HOOKED! ㅤ Before I explain why I love this book so much, I want to give a little disclosure. ㅤ The author, Tia Christine, is the founder of Books4Movies and Order Of The Bookish. But these are my own thoughts (I'm Chris, the Books4Movies manager). I was not asked to share this book, but I feel like this story is so amazing that it needed to have a spotlight. ㅤ @ Tia, please don't fire me 🙃 ㅤ Okay, now here is why this story is so great: 1- Its SO relatable. I dare you to find a character that you don't emotionally connect with. I definitely feel closer to Sylvaine, the sister who always has her nose in a book and her head in the clouds. 2- Its EPIC!! And by that I mean, so much happens and it feels truly like an epic fantasy movie playing out in my head. And even though this is a complete world-building, the names and locations aren't overwhelming or confusing. 3- Humans vs Fae - Umm YES! The tension and history and fighting got me so excited, and I already know that more info about their past issues will be mentioned in the rest of the series, so if you have questions that are unanswered in this book, just be patient! 4- The MYSTERY! I was on the edge of my seat and literally held my breath through a couple of scenes. I have so many questions that have me still dreaming about this story, even months after I read it. 5 - A TRUE young adult book. If you've seen some of the drama happening in the YA Fantasy circle about "YA" books that are more appropriate to adults, then you'll appreciate that Tia kept this book clean. Minimal romance and no spice. Which makes this exactly perfect for anyone who is middle grade up to adults who don't want excessive romance. ㅤ If this post didn't convince you to go read this book ASAP, then you are probably a VERY picky reader. High school student Tobias Leight thinks he’s a regular student, with two best friends and a nice German shepherd, until he’s attacked by a demon and finds out there’s a lot more to the world than he imagined. Now he needs to learn how to be a wizard and protect himself. Tobias tells the story himself, and he’s earnest and likeable- making jokes as he tells the story.
