Lee and I woke up at 3 am this morning to a strange clicking noise. Suddenly, we heard "pop" noise. Lee jumped out of bed, grabbed the kettle, and the whole room filled with smoke. Melting plastic dripped and burned his foot ( luckily, nothing major). The fire alarm kicked in and woke up the entire hotel. We were shocked how long it took for people to react and appear out of their rooms. The staff tried to switch off the alarm, but the isolation key to the fire panel was broken. They were panicking and didn't know how to reset the panel. Lee camly walked back to our room, got the Leatherman out (looking at me with a " I told you Leathermans are uselfull" look), somehow managed to open the control panel and did his magic. Although Lee handled the whole situation amazingly, I know that we are extremely lucky (and unlucky at the same time). A main electrical line has exploded in the mechanical room on the first floor of the north wing of the Roadway Inn & Suites on Hayden Island Drive. I spoke with some guests and employees of the hotel to find out what happened. An employee told me that somebody had been messing with the fire alarm shortly before the explosion, and that when the alarm first went off, it was silenced because they believed it had been pulled by the person who had been fiddling with one. A couple moments later, it went off again, and was accompanied by the smell of smoke. At that point they began going door-to-door telling guests to evacuate, and there were several guests who didn't believe it was real at first. The blast from the explosion was so powerful that the exterior walls of the mechanical room to collapse outward, and a window on the second story stairwell next to the room shattered. Fire crews, paramedics, and PGE responded, evacuating the remaining guests, putting out the fire, and investigating the cause and any other potential hazards. New plumes smoke continued to appear sporadically, and the decision was made by PGE to cut power to the building for the time being, until it can be determined that there is no further risk. Following the power shut off, hotel staff and guests congregated at the steps of the main entrance, as staff began to sort through the paper records for the night, and upon confirming room number and the phone number affiliated with the reservation, initiated the process of moving guests into rooms at the Holiday Inn down the road. At least one animal remained inside the hotel throughout the duration of the fire because the person was not at the hotel when the explosion occurred. Fire crews were informed and concluded that it was safer for the cat to remain in the room until the smoke has cleared then it would be to send someone into the room to get the cat and bring it out through the smoke. They said it was all black smoke and no one helped them out when they were screaming and begging to know which way they could go, everyone just stood and watched. "Improvise, adapt, and overcome!" As I mentioned yesterday, the scaling ladder is a great confidence builder in young Ffs. It helps to get them used to uncomfortable situations like working at height, and trusting those they work with, and for. The FDNY took them out of service in the 1990s. But what would you do if you needed one and didn't have one? Photo 2 shows a great innovation undertaken by the San Juan, Puerto Rico FD at a fire in the Dupont Plaza Hotel and Casino on New Year's Eve, 1986. The fire was an arson fire set in a labor dispute with hotel management. It was set in a ground floor ballroom, and quickly filled the entire ground floor and the Casino, blocking escape from the upper floors. Over 900 were in the building at the time and many were trapped on the upper floors of the 17-story building. Ninety-six people were killed and over 140 injured. The beachfront location made 3 sides of the hotel inaccessible to aerial devices (none of which would reach the upper floors anyway), so the rescuers were forced to innovate and came up with the system you see in photo 2. Roof ladders were used to allow rescuers to ascend the exterior of the building carrying lifesaving ropes and Atlas Life Belts. Hotel occupants were secured in the belts and were belayed from above as they made their way down the ladders to safety. That was a great solution to a serious problem. I wonder how many of us would have thought of that "on the fly", as it were, at the height of a catastrophic fire. "Improvise, adapt, and overcome!" is a motto that all firefighters should embrace. You must have a problem-solving mind, as well as the physical strength and stamina, and an extraordinary amount of courage to be a successful firefighter when the chips are down. MGM GRAND---PART 2---THE FIRE Friday, Nov. 21, 1980, a fire began in the Deli, sparked by wiring in a refrigerated dessert case. The fire would spread to the casino floor when a massive fireball burst out of the main entrance. The fire was able to spread as there were no sprinklers. Although the 4-alarm fire was only on the main floor, burning material created toxic fumes and smoke, which ascended throughout the hotel tower via elevators and stairwells, causing the majority of the deaths. Guests were trapped in the smoking tower. Fire department ladders were only able to reach the ninth-floor exterior. A helicopter rescue effort pulled 1,000 people from the roof. In all the fired killed 85 people, with most succumbing to smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide. Many factors led to those deaths. Faulty smoke dampers within the duct network allowed toxic fumes to circulate through the HVAC system. Guests were not notified of the fire, as the switchboard operators had to evacuate. No sprinklers in the guest rooms or halls. Stairwell fire doors were propped open allowing smoke to spread. Eight months and $50 million later the Grand reopened in July 1981, with the addition of sprinklers and an automatic fire alarm system. A 5 minute fire safety program, hosted by Gene Kelly played on tvs in hotel rooms. The fire led to major reforms of fire safety guidelines and codes. At 15:10 on January 15th, 2024 West Metro Fire Rescue SAM 1 advised Jeffcom of smoke in the area of W. Colfax Ave. & Harlan St. and started the investigation. SAM 1 found a working fire at the Rocky Mountain Motel, 6001 W. Colfax Ave. in Lakewood and requested a full response. SAM 1 took command and requested a 2nd alarm response with heavy fire and a victim. Engine 1 arrived and started fire attack with a 1 3/4 and Medic 1 started patient care. Engine 1 started on their own water supply, but had a frozen hydrant. Engine 16 arrived and started the primary search, Engine 2 pulled a 2nd line off Engine 1 for fire attack and Tower 2 set-up for master stream operations. District 1 arrived and assumed command in the offensive strategy and Engine 3 established the water supply at Ingalls St. & W. Colfax Ave. to Engine 1. March 29th, 1971, early on this mild Monday afternoon, fire and police departments were called to the recently vacant Hotel Petersburg. Another fire had broken out, filling the hotel with smoke and causing an explosion in the abandoned basement. There was minor damage to the buildings adjacent to the Hotel Petersburg. Outside of the hotel, on the street, an electric transformer exploded, causing City Hall to lose power. In times of turmoil, good neighbors know how to lend a hand. A lot was lost in the Hotel Petersburg fire in the little hours of December 1st, 1970. But when you strip it down to the bare bones, two things always remain: hope and community. Having good neighbors means half the battle is already won. Much like something out of a movie, the Hotel Petersburg was not short of drama - its grandeur, a magnetic attraction for it. Nothing that majestic could live a quiet life. Army Private Evan was the last rogue, looking to play the savior, under its roof. Instead, he sent the building up in flames, putting many, many lives in danger, causing irreparable physical and financial damage to the hotel. October 21, 1973. 2 a.m. in the Skid Road area of downtown Vancouver, British Columbia. The Commercial Hotel. It’s on fire. The top floor blazes endlessly as elderly pensioners try to make their escape. Two die trying to get out by jumping from the fourth floor. One man tells the press, “It was stupid. They jumped. They panicked and they jumped.” Thinking better of his callous nature, he continues. “But I guess I would have done the same thing if I’d been on the top floor. It must have been hell up there.” Others hang on to the ledges of the windows. They hang on by their fingernails. Blood from their cut and broken hands dripping down the face of the hotel for all to see. A different kind of advertising. Another guest dies in the hospital. Even after surviving so much. The fire starts in a washroom by the stairwell. There is no other way out. Sprinklers are mandated by the city of Vancouver for the Hotel. To be installed by 1975. At the latest. In designing for construction there are many entrances to a building apart from the front door. December 1st 1970: this unremarkable, early Tuesday morning set the scene for Hotel Petersburg’s second, and largest, fire. Packed with 50 sleeping guests, 22 of whom were placed between the fourth and fifth floors. One of these guests was Army Private Andrew Evan of Red Devil, Alaska. Stationed at Camp Lee, VA, he was perhaps the only guest wide awake at the time. It was Evan who alerted other guests of the flames, banging on doors, and telling people to evacuate. It was noted there were three fires in total: one on the second-floor stairs and one at the end of each the fourth and fifth floors. The @Petersburg Fire department responded to the fire quickly, it took 60 firemen to extinguish the flames. By 5am, outside equipment was called in from @[17841458487254342:@colonialheightsfireems] , Bensley, Ettrick and Bon Air. The Petersburg Fire Captain, L.G. Harris, became harrowingly trapped on the fourth floor. Witnesses watched from below as he was rescued by an aerial ladder. Crews finally got the fire under control by 6am, miraculously, with no loss of life or significant injury to any person. After the initial emergency, the fire department and local city detectives got to work on an intense investigation into the fires. Shockingly, within four days of the incident, Army Private Evan was arrested and charged. He was held in lieu of a $5,000 bond (approximately $40,000 in 2023). On February 27th 1971, Judge Willis W. Bohannan sentenced Evan to 30 years of incarceration at the State Penitentiary. He had plead guilty to the crimes, admitting that he set the fires so he would be hailed the rescue hero. He was 21 years old at the time. Pattaya — One Kuwaiti tourist was moderately injured in a hotel fire that occurred early on Monday morning in Pattaya, on October 2nd. The incident took place at 3 AM at a popular hotel , located on Third Road in the Nongprue sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province. The hotel’s full name was withheld due to an ongoing fire investigation. Upon receiving the report, firefighting personnel from Pattaya City were dispatched to the scene to quell the frames. Upon arrival, authorities observed a large fire emerging from the balcony of a room on the second floor of the seven-story hotel. Thick smoke was billowing out as the rescuers evacuated an unclear number of guests from the premises. Firemen took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. Upon inspection, they found one injured person named Mr. Jaber M. H. S. November 16, 1966 – A tired guest fell asleep while smoking a cigarette - catching the mattress on fire and filling the building with smoke - in the earliest hours of the morning. Firemen were called to the Hotel Petersburg on Tabb Street, at 12:30am to extinguish the flames. The firemen managed to get it under control and put the fire out. The guest was unharmed…and unnamed. HOTEL FIRE 🔥 At 3:49 Friday morning the Tucson Fire Department was dispatched to the 6900 block of S. Tucson Blvd for reports of a fire at the Baymont by Wyndham Hotel. Engine 22 was first on scene at 3:55, where they observed smoke from the roof of the building as guests evacuated. Once command was established a second alarm was called to assist in evacuation and locating the fire on the 3rd floor. This fire was called under control at 4:27. The jaws of an excavator crunched into the exterior of the historic Harborside Inn late Monday morning, beginning the demolition of one of Block Island’s most iconic hotels. Vaux Finnemore, one of the inn’s co-owners, looked on while filming the first steps of demolition on her phone. “Someone asked me if I was sad,” said Finnemore. “But I don’t really know how to feel.” The inn, which first opened in 1879 as The Pequot House, was ravaged by a fire that began in the first-floor kitchen last month, and was deemed a “total loss” by the state fire marshal. A hotel in Clarksville, Indiana was engulfed in flames on Sunday, according to the Clarksville Fire Department. WLKY had a crew on the scene where much of the length of the Best Western off Lewis and Clark Parkway could be seen roaring with fire. Some hotel workers on site said that all staff and guests got out safely and that guests who were staying at the hotel are being taken care of. A spokesperson for the fire department said that there were no injuries and that the building was quite old, so there may have been fewer safeties in place. Police are assisting in the investigation in case it is later determined any crime may be involved. Spain, Portugal and Italy have been in extreme heat for several days. It has been around 47 degrees there and this is not over yet. Many people have fainted and people have died from the heat. People are advised to be outside as little as possible. In Greece, forest fires started Tuesday due to strong winds. Firefighters have not yet managed to bring them under control. Most of the forest fires are taking place on the island of Rhodes, near the towns of Pefki, Lindos and Kalathos. Five helicopters and 173 firefighters are working in the area. So far, three hotels have been damaged and the areas of Laerma, Lardos and Asklipio were also affected. It is estimated that about 19,000 people have been evacuated by land and sea. For these people, the Greek ministry is trying to arrange places to stay. Some people have been given places in a hotel meeting room with mattresses on the floor. Some people are sleeping in cardboard boxes on the street. The situation in Rhodes is serious and this will continue for some time. The fire department expects the forest fires to get worse. Brighton's Royal Albion hotel has suffered severe damage from a fire that broke out in July, leaving some parts of the building structurally unsound 🏨⠀ ⠀ This large hotel that was built nearly 200 years ago will now have to close whilst the fire is dealt with and will lose part of its historic structure.
