Yesterday I was on a call with my group Pitched to Published, listening to stories of people from our group who have reached the point of signing with either a literary agent or a publisher. National Poetry Month 2023 Day 29 Enlarged heart... A trip to Salt Lake City as a little girl; my mama, my sisters best friend Julie and me... Hogle Zoo and Primary Children’s Hospital. We were sent to a cardiology specialist Dr Visi because the doctors in town were concerned I had an enlarged heart... When I was examined he told my mama that I was fine... My heart was just a little bigger... Years gone by and the memory faded until one afternoon as I sat in a parking lot with tears running down my face and pain in my heart... I remembered his words... I caught my breath and it became clear... My heart was large and it loved quickly and deeply... It had been bruised and broken and I realized why it was so fragile ... I had been given this heart because my purpose on this earth is to love... He enlarged it because he knew I’d need the extra capacity... He knew I would love hard and it would need to be resilient. He knew some people wouldn’t understand my love... If I have loved you, I will always love you; maybe not in the same way~ maybe I would just love you for the lesson but I would love you. And as deeply as my heart feels the pain of loving some, it soars and swells with joy at loving others and those that love back. National Poetry Month 2024 Day 27 My Writing Desk I sit here now at this familiar desk, the one I pulled out of my grandfathers home that was then my mamas, and now is mine and my sisters… It’s steady and sturdy in my practice... it holds my papers, pens, laptop, candles & lipgloss, tissues & books, and my green elephant statue… When I write it holds my coffee cup and in reality it holds me... What’s a writer’s life without cool notebooks? Saw this one with a castle and a forest, and it was meant for me. Started using it for research notes for my historical fantasy. First I’m going to talk about this poem, because it bothered me. The #tinyspringpoem challenge by @bethkempton challenges us to write to a prompt in 10 minutes max with zero editing. So far, I’ve been pretty happy with the poems I created in response. But this one. It started as a haiku. Then became about light and cracks and that Leonard Cohen line. Then it became about light in the ocean depths where no light can go. Then back to cracks and light. I don’t particularly like it, except the bleached bones bit strangely, and I didn’t publish it last night for that reason. It felt like a brain dump. But. I’m interested in the ‘meta’ of this. So I’m hitting publish this morning, and the ideas will probably end up in a substack post somewhere. So I hope you enjoy it, but, if nothing else, take it as encouragement to hit publish even if you don’t like something. LAYERS By Karen May Sinking through the layers of soul to the depths of me. DRIP - a #tinyspringpoem by Karen May Rain gathers pooling on my hood collecting at the edges of my vision of mountains rivers forests you showed me as we wander and breathe watching rainbows grow from cloud-strewn vales over mist-wet bracken tree bark black in streaks and streams tumbling through sheep fields green swamps and saturated their eyes staring. These became my trails forests waterways rainbows when you took me to them I found a world I knew was there but didn’t know how to walk in or breathe in or live in but now we walk together seeing feeling this world so alive with drips on the edge of my hood my eyes. — Trying a new style today and incorporating another poetry prompt. It was to write about how being with someone you love can turn an ordinary moment into a transcendent one. @tomiiiwest makes my life more brilliant in every way (even when a 3 mile walk turns into a 7 mile walk through very, VERY wet fields, or the time we went for a run and ended up fording a river… I could go on). 📸: one of our many recent walks right before the heavens opened and drenched us, so my hood was dripping for the next mile. PLEA - a #tinyspringpoem by Karen May Please stop My heart can’t It’s aching so bad. Please stop I don’t want this It’s not what I had planned. Please For the love of all that is good Stop making me Run up another bloody hill. — A little sway from my usual style! I saw the prompt this morning, eating breakfast, after far too many hills on my run. I had a sense of humour failure at the top of one and this was pretty much the conversation I had with my dearest (who, incidentally, was prancing around like a baby deer thoroughly delighted with life like we weren’t on a run that was single handedly trying to suffocate me). Oh, we then decided it was an awesome idea to walk 4 miles to go to a family Easter egg hunt. About halfway through, I regretted going along with this plan. WATCHING - a #tinyspringpoem by Karen May I am watching the sun spill joy and light over the sky as molten fire, a vibrant pink-almost-red. It smoothes out from the mountain, a smear of paint daubed carelessly across the indigo-blushed evening. Solo birds soar home to settle amongst branches turning green in little starbursts, then all at once. White smoke puffs and huffs up and up the most reliable gauge of the cold descending as the clear night turns glittered. I am watching from my window in shelter, removed and detached and longing to touch the sunset and night with outstretched fingers. Instead, I touch with my soul. — This delightful challenge from @bethkempton is harder this time around than when I did the winter one! I find myself wanting to edit. I tend to write these poems by hand and when I type them, it’s so difficult to resist editing! Who loves listening to a stream doing its thing in a field? If your answer is no, I’m not sure we can friends… Joking. Sort of. We did another few miles of the Usk Valley Walk this weekend. Here are some snippets from the walk. Including the squall we got unexpectedly caught in. Thank goodness I packed the right gear. Literally two minutes before I’d been in my t shirt sweating. ‘Mystery Beacons rain’ we call it. Phone says one thing - sky disagrees and says another. Part of my challenge this week was to write to a prompt given to me by my @tomiiiwest which was to describe a walk we’ve done. No content with describing one, I think I managed to fit 4 separate walks in. Don’t panic - I took tiny snippets from each. They were the most magical moments from each walk. The moments I forgot I was a human and time was going by, and I was getting left behind. “I’ve hit a wall of resistance,” I bravely shared with my sacred writing group. I watched as various faces lit up in their respective zoom squares. Several of these wise humans have watched me wrestle and welcome my story crafted into poems and prose over the last year—a project that keeps metamorphosing, as do I. So, when they met me with curiosity and excitement at the “wall of resistance”, I found myself softening into my current truth. After a solid two months of flow-state with my project, I have arrived at this place of resistance. Resistance isn't new to me—no, she and I are quite familiar. But, this time, I’m choosing to sit next to her. {A different approach for sure.} I’m not trying to break her, push her, take her over with my power or intellect or shame. Instead, I’m sitting cross-legged right next to my wall. She has things to tell me, I think. Things she wants me to know before I’m ready to receive the privilege of crossing over to what’s on the other side. So, I am sitting. And, Maybe, this is the part where I don’t leave? The part where I don’t self-abandon? The part where I finally choose me (like all of me)? Maybe this is the wall where I learn how to stay? I don’t know. But, I’m still sitting here—cross-legged and soft, ready to hear.

To write Queenswood, I created a whole world. This is such a thing, I don’t know how to express it. It was much more than imagining it, the writing was integral. The world - it’s look, the tactile feel of it, the smells, the sounds - grew as I wrote page after page. Perhaps I was drawing from some deep well in my own subconscious, in the collective unconscious, or somewhere else, some Otherworld. Там, он давал ей возможность апеллировать к абсолютной величине счастья. Ева бродила по воскресному центру, полупустому и холодному. I had a little reflect on my writing last night. Since I was feeling a bit stuck. I found it so interesting the stuff that came out! Today is my Leap Year Anniversary. These past 4 years I have LEAPED far and AIMED at the stars and am truly humbled by the experiences lived. Who knows what will become of the next 4. I am devoted to taking bigger leaps, farther leaps, and work harder so I can LEAP HIGHER in Joy CELEBRATION and EXCITEMENT. I love what I do. So much so I work twice as hard to carve paths and find opportunities to do the work. I launched my first business at 25, but it wasn’t til I relaunched another with greater intention that a business with a dream the name InSpiral was born. I AM always evolving its meaning, but it was more than just a business. It was a start of a journey, a commitment to storytelling with purpose. I am grateful I get a chance to fulfill this purpose every day. I thank everyone in my journey who believes in me and my vision and what I wish to create. The prompts were SIREN and LISTENING respectively. We went out into the night to try photographing the night sky on a mountain. Standing there, in the darkness lit only by a half moon, I listened and heard the siren song. And this poem arrived. Day 15 of the #creativeleapfebruary by @thesearethedays.co and @studiogently VIEW I admit, I was spoiled for choice of the photos I can share with you. This or a mountain peak or a beautiful sunset in South Africa? I decided on this because I have honestly never seen as many rainbows as I do living here. And after 3 years, I still remark ‘oh look a rainbow!’ They’re a little piece of magic in the every day. Maybe this is why they say gold lies at the end of the rainbow? They touch down all over this part of Wales and I pinch myself every day that I get to live in a place like this. This is a place that honestly looks like a painting when the sun hits the mountain just right. How can you not be inspired living here? Perhaps because I have lived in so many places and moved so much, I find my level of appreciation is so high. I hope it never wears off. Day 13 of #creativeleapfebruary by @thesearethedays.co and @studiogently GATHER I gather stories (and clearly books). Not like some jealous dragon guarding treasure (wouldn’t mind some gold though). More like a librarian with neat shelves heaving under the weight of all the lives, all the hopes and fears, dreams and regrets. I’m that person who will while away the hours listening to you tell me your deep and meaningfuls. Maybe it’s growing up around so many people who talk in stories. I can’t tell you how many times I heard the same stories, but I loved them each time. I gathered more details, more nuances with each re-telling. It is an enormous privilege of mine to be my family historian. It is my responsibility, I feel, to gather the stories of my family, to preserve them and then to re-tell them. I believe this is what keeps us alive after we’re gone. To tell stories of the life of the dead, to laugh and cry and wonder what they were thinking when they did this or that, to forget certain details of a story and wish they were here to tell us straight. Stories are how our brains make sense of the world. They are important, not just delightful. They are far more than just a source of entertainment. And so, I gather stories. What story will I gather next? P.S. I also write stories. Usually made up of snippets of real stories, inspirations I take and turn into something else. 📸: our bookshelves at home. Books that tell stories about us. And ornaments gathered from our travels, and from our interests.

Day 11 of the #creativeleapfebruary by @thesearethedays.co and @studiogently BOOK LOVER Hold my tea - I’ve got this one. If I told my love what the prompt is today, he’d laugh - book lover probably doesn’t cover it. No, I don’t read 40,000 in a week. I did 26 in 2023. And that’s entirely down to @audible_uk and being able to listen to different books than I read. I’m not what you’d call a fast reader. I will ditch a book if it’s boring (I have a sizeable DNF pile - life’s too short to read stuff you don’t enjoy) and I will tend to stay away from the books TikTok says I should read (or it would if I used it at all). I also stand by this adage: buying books and reading books are two totally different hobbies. I’m currently re-reading The Twelve by @jccronin, easily one of my favourite trilogies of all time. It absolutely inspired my own novel too. I’m listening to the Ink Black Heart by @robertgalbraith. I’ve enjoyed the Strike novels far more than I expected too. Especially when read by Robert Glenister.
