👨‍🌾🐜🐝🐛When trying to be more environmentally friendly, farmers can use insects as biocontrol agents. 👉️Many insects are predators, which means they attack and consume other species that might be a pest. In this way, such predator insects can be used to control certain pests rather than using chemical pesticides, which would kill all kind of insects, including the beneficial ones that are needed for pollination and other purposes. 🙌Mantis are bizarre looking and fascinating insects that consume a lot of prey. 🙋As part of our "Climate Monday" sessions of the Mother Nature Environmental Camps, one topic is "Insects as Stewards", explaining how important insects are and how they can make agriculture more sustainable and regenerative. #biologicalfarming #environmentalfriendlyfarming #protectinsects #usefulinsects #biologicalagriculture #sustainableagriculture #sustainablefarming #biocontrolagents #sustainability #environmentalfriendly #mothernaturecamp #environmentalcamps #insectsasstewards #climatemonday #climatechange #againstclimatechange #fightclimatechange #importanceofinsects #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #joinWorldUnite! #ecoholidays #volunteerholidays #environmentalconservation #ecotourism #volunteerprogram #volunteer #mothernature #volunteerabroad #volunteertravel

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁? My friend messaged me after my last post and said: "𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙤 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧. 𝙔𝙚𝙨, 𝙄 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙬𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢?" I know many people who I talk to on here are well versed on the subject and already waving the flag for insects but other people are perhaps wondering the same thing. Firstly, I want to say that I'm no expert in any of this; simply a keen enthusiast with a basic knowledge. 1. POLLINATION: Insects are vital in pollinating a huge numbers of the plants around the world. In other words they spread pollen from one plant to another (simplest example of how they do it). Why does that matter? Without that process, plants wouldn't make fruit/veg, seeds or more of themselves to continue their existence. A few (hopefully) relatable points: Bumblebees are the only pollinator able to pollinate plants of the tomato family (tomatoes, potatoes, aubergine etc), for one example. Therefore, no ketchup without bumblebees... Flies are the only being to pollinate cocoa trees for chocolate. People seem to hate flies but they do a huge amount of pollination, especially as many species can withstand wind, rain and awful conditions that many other insects will not. So food growing is a pretty important aspect of life, right? Start to lose pollinators and food supply is at risk... "If all mankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed ten thousand years ago. If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos." E.O. Wilson I probably should have used a photo of an insect pollinating a crop but this Marbled White butterfly was looking magnificent on Creeping Thistle last week. Pollinators can be bees, flies, butterflies, hoverflies, moths, beetles. Anything else? 🐝 Save The Bees 🌼Flower Friday We all need to do our bit for the environment and one of these is #savethebees we here at Susie Watson Designs are infatuated with bees and all their beauty 💕 Which is why we try to incorporate this incredibly important insect on our cushions, fabric and even pottery.... Susie has a deep passion for horticulture, so tries to keep her garden abundant with flowers that the bees can thrive from, because without them many plants will fail to reproduce and become extinct. Did you know: Bees are responsible for pollinating 85% of all food crops for humans! Due to the attention of the bees, crops thrive and produce yummy fruit, vegetables, flowers, nuts, seeds, beans, and much more… 🐝 #SaveTheBees #FlowerFriday

It was Vincent Van Gogh who said: 'Great things are done by a series of small things brought together'. The truth of this observation is apparent in nature. Every small insect and flower working together to create beauty. I try to remind myself of this truth in my daily life too, no matter how small the act, it has it's own importance. Sometimes it's only hindsight that reveals it to us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #vangogh #vangoghquote #vangoghfan #bees #bee #importanceofinsects #lovenature #inspiredbynature #glass #glassdecoration #tokenofhope #abethebees #gardenlove #blueribbon #motivationmonday #quotesofinstagram #countthesmallthings #smallsteps #reopening #supportsmallbusiness #supportlocal #shoplocal #dreamplando #workingtowardssomething #noticethesmallthings #lookhowfarivecome #thecorbeaupress #thecorbeaucollection #beautifullyscratchedthings #glassengraving

Insecta: illustration, conservation and curation. Yesterday, we partnered with our amazing UNE academics and NERAM to facilitate an insect masterclass. Throughout the day, attendees explored the integral and complex role and relationship insects have with society and our planet through workshops on insect behaviour, depictions in art, culture and media, as well as entomology in Australia and citizen science. Participants had the opportunity to ethically catch and pin their own insects and explore UNE’s Collections. Swipe left to view some of the moments captured throughout the day. A huge thank you to our facilitators and participants for what was a very engaging and fun day. "Insects create the biological foundation for all terrestrial ecosystems. They cycle nutrients, pollinate plants, disperse seeds, maintain soil structure and fertility, control populations of other organisms, and provide a major food source for other taxa. Most major insect pests in agriculture are non‐native species that have been introduced into a new ecosystem, usually without their natural biological control agents." -"The importance of Insects" by Geoffrey G. E. Scudder The Common Birdwing or Troides helena is essentially a forest species but is also drawn to cultivated areas in gardens and parks. Helen in Greek mythology was the daughter of Zeus and Leda. She was said to be the most beautiful woman in the world. #butterfly #commonbirdwing #importanceofinsects #biodiversity #ecosystem

I will be the first to admit that I am not keen on all insects mainly because of a lifelong developed irrational fear of them, especially wasps, moths and spiders. I don't like things buzzing in my ears or the idea of being stung or bitten but I do appreciate how important insects are so when I saw this fly yesterday, I felt like it was a perfect opportunity for a photo. Having a rest on a landslide of volcanic rocks and stones it stayed still long enough to be photographed and appreciated. - - - #insect #insects #insectsofinstagram #insects_of_our_world #fly #flies #wings #abugslife #detailsinnature #prettyfly #instafly #instainsect #instainsects #athursseat #thisisedinburgh #thisisscotland #walkinthepark #beautifuledinburgh #beautifulscotland #nature #natureisamazing #appreciatethesmallthings #respectinsects #importanceofinsects #ecosystem #wildlife #wildlifeofinstagram #instawild #instawildlife #instagram

Do you find insects important? 🐝🦗🐛🐞 • Why are they important? Or why do you think they aren't? Are they annoying you, or are you scarred of them? 🕷️ • As a child I was avoiding bees and other beelike insects. I don't know why, but there was some fear of them probably. I loved to watch ants, beetles and other insects found in meadows. As I was growing up I found out, that bees doesn't attack if not threatened. I even had opportunity to watch them in their hive and walk among them peacefully. ☺️ I find insects extremely important for life in nature. They polinate, work with soil, etc...there's so many helpful and even so many pests, but even they have their role in nature. People today want to get rid of annoying bugs, insects and try to get rid of them with chemicals. The most devastating for nature and insects are chemicals, that aren't naturally found in nature. They damage insects and animals natural environment and also plants and soil. Let me know your opinions 🌿 __________ #insects #insect #pollinators #pollinate #bee #flowers #importanceofinsects #nature #natural #nature_photo #blueberries #outdoors #pagan #slavic #_taurnil #plants #flower #leaf #forestsoul #beautyofnature #naturelover #priroda #hmyz #vlese #cucoriedky #boruvky #opelovanie #spring #jar

[值得收藏的雜誌]其實都已經是三星期前去7仔搵vinnetta雪糕果陣見到的雜誌,見到竟然講昆蟲,就秒速買咗,但一直都冇post... 呢本係5月號的national geographic magazine美國版,標題為:“You'll miss them when they're gone”,是在說#昆蟲 的重要性。

Insects play a vital role in all ecosystems, and perform several crucial functions, which includes aerating the soil, blossom pollination, and helping to control plant diseases and pests. They help create the nutrient-rich layer of top soil, that’s helps plants grow. Insect species have declined by approximately 57% since 1989. That’s almost a 60% decrease in just 30 years 😢 This is mainly as a result of habitat destruction, intensive agriculture (with the use of pesticides and insecticides), urbanisation, industrialisation and climate change. Our survival depends on healthy, thriving ecosystems, of which insects are an integral part. We need to transition to agricultural systems that protect and promote insect life. Roadway Farms has an implementation plan for this, which we will share with you early in the new year. 📸 : Shot on Roadway Farms by @shakti_s #Insects #ImportanceOfInsects #Farming #RegenerativeAgriculture #RoadwayFarms #HealthyEcoSystems #Natures #CircularEconomy #NoWaster #SoilFoodWeb #ClimateChange #WeLoveInsects #WatchThisSpace #LadyBug

Have you noticed less insects? I have. Living right next to a swathe of indigenous forest on a hill of Fynbos, in a homestead that uses no poisons whatsoever in the veggie garden or in the home, I would have thought that we would still have many, many insects. But the drop in insect life is very apparent, so much so, that when I see a moth I really notice it, it's not simply one of many attracted to the light. This moth was inside our home, looking weak, so I took it out to a flower to see if it needed some rejuvenation, but it's legs folded and feelers drooped in resignation. This drop in insect life in our area is not a peer reviewed, scientific study of course, but purely observational. There have been scientific studies on the global decline of insects however, and the findings are frightening. Insects have traditionally been seen as irritating and inconvenient, to be swatted, sprayed and eliminated from our homes and gardens. But I find the decline in insects deeply disturbing, their work in pollinating flowers and foods and processing natural waste is invaluable. We won't survive without them. And of course they are a huge link in the food chain for birds, reptiles and small mammals. Without them entire food chains will collapse. Yesterday we drove for hours through the wheat and canola fields, and our windscreen was pretty much clear of insects, in fact when just one insect hit the windscreen it was really noticeable. Do you remember what our windscreens used to look like after long drives? . . What can we do... 🌿stop all poisons in our gardens and homes 🌿question foods like canola that use crop sprayers, look for alternatives that don't spray poisons 🌿speak to friends, family, neighbours about their experience of the loss of insects and the need to stop poisons in our homes 🌿become aware of the climate emergency and its toll on all life, take steps to lower our carbon footprints and divest from companies with a high carbon impact 🌿plant only plants indigenous to your area
