Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia “The things you name grow in power.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was my first Silvia Moreno-Garcia read and I was not disappointed. The characters were distinct and vibrant, and I really enjoyed the mythology aspect to this book. I think it’s super fun that it’s set in the 1920s. I feel like there aren’t too many fantasy books set in that era (but do correct me if I’m wrong). I love the care that went into this too. There’s a whole glossary at the end of the book which is prefaced with a bit of an explanation about the language and the mythology in relation to the story. I ended up reading this really fast… for a couple reasons—one, because it was technically a buddy read and I’ve been slacking; and two, because it just drew me in and I’d sit down to read a chapter but then end up reading 100 pages. So. Overall, I’m really happy with this one and I’m glad we picked it up. . . . . . . . . . . #godsofjadeandshadow #silviamorenogarcia #fantasybooks

- Hold my beer... 😅 Folgendes habe ich immerhin beendet: • Neil Gaiman/Shane Oakley - Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dead Desire (Comic): Ich meine, allein schon der Titel! _________________________ 🇬🇧 How could you even "read past" that kind of the pile?! - Hold my beer... For various reasons my April reading didn't go that well. I got nothing done for the Simon-says-Challenge or the diminishing of my tbr - but I added quite some books. It's going great. 😅 This is what I did finish : • Neil Gaiman/Shane Oakley - Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dead Desire (Comic): The title alone! This is about an author who dearly wants to write serious literature and fails - until he allows himself to write what he enjoys ↓↓↓[...] 🇬🇧

Once more, Sylvia Moreno-Garcia captivates with a story intertwining cinematic history, the authenticity of human emotions, and the intriguing elements of warlocks and Nazi occultism. Monserrat and Tristan’s journey of finding a missing horror movie, breaking a decades long curse, battling the social injustices that plagued Latin America influenced by Nazi Supremacy, and healing parts of their souls all while trying to survive attacks was quite the journey and even better told through an audiobook. 📖 Silver Nitrate by Sylvia Moreno-Garcia Rating: l⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #silviamorenogarcia #silvernitrate #occultists #occultism #darkandmoody #latinxhorror #latinxvoices #gothicnovel #horrorbooks #bookstagram #goodreads #bookaddict

Book Review! Mexican Gothic - 4.75/5 What an amazing book! I originally borrowed the audiobook from my library, but enjoyed it so much, I had to buy my own copy! In this book, Noemi Taboada has received a letter from her cousin, Catalina, asking for her help. Noemi travels from Mexico City to High Place, Catalina’s newlywed home, to figure out what was happening to her cousin. She arrives at an English-style mansion on the edge of a silver mining town, with a family that aren’t quite what they portray. With a sense of dark foreboding, Noemi tries to figure out what is happening to her cousin, and in the house, while trying to maintain her own sanity. This book was such an enjoyably creepy story to listen to! There was so many moments where I wasn’t sure which way the story would go, it was really fun to wonder if Noemi was really experiencing these events, or if they were in her mind. It’s a delightfully atmospheric story, with enough gothic elements to give it a horror feel. The details put into this story make each character feel very real, and Noemi is an incredibly strong woman, which made the story for me. Have you read this book? Anyone else a compulsive lister? ‌ One reason Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity resonated so strongly with me more than 20 years ago is that I very clearly saw myself in protagonist Rob Gordon and the way he (and his friends) constantly compiled Top 5 lists of records and songs. ‌ I’ve done this too for most of my life. ‌ I’ve never gone to therapy, and even though I’m a naturally reflective person, I’ve resisted ascribing too much subconscious motivation to my actions. But if I had to guess, it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that my chronic need to rank and organize things is one way my psyche tries to course-correct for the amount of anxiety and worry I feel throughout every other aspect of my life. ‌ It’s my body’s way of recognizing I need to feel like I have control over something, so here: let’s make a Top 10 list of the Best Bands from Manchester, England* to distract me from whatever else is going on in my brain. ‌ I mean, I was the 14-year-old kid who kept an alphabetized inventory of all his music cassettes on index cards, complete with production credits and song running times, so imposing order on my chaotic head is clearly something I’ve always needed to do. ‌ Is this too serious? ‌ Would it be preferable if I just said, “Hey! We’re a third of the way through 2024! Here’s my Top 10 Books of the Year so far!” ‌ If so, feel free to ignore the opening bit and skip to this section. ‌ Outside of the top 3, these books appear in no particular order. But wherever they’re placed in the pyramid, these are the ones that have made the biggest positive impression so far this year. ‌ Not bad, right? ‌ *1. Joy Division / New Order 2. The Smiths 3. The Stone Roses 4. Oasis 5. Buzzcocks 6. The Charlatans 7. Happy Mondays 8. The Fall 9. Elbow 10. Doves (cheating slightly by combining Joy Division and New Order, but I wanted to make sure I got Doves in there.) ‌ ‌ #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bibliophile #bookworm #instabooks #booklover #booknerd #bookish #teacherswhoread #readmorebooks #booksta #dennislehane #gabriellezevin #stephenmarkley #tananarivedue #donwinslow #rachelharrison #silviamorenogarcia #sacosby #cjleede #waubgeshigrice

☔️April Reading Recap💐 How did April treat you, my bookish frenz? For me, April was a stressful month of life, but it ended up being a pretty solid month of reading! I ranked 22/24 books that I read at 4 stars or higher, although my only 5-star ranking of the month was for my reread of “Anne of Green Gables” with 1.5 of my kids (ahem, one listened intermittently 😅), and their joy in it sparked my joy all over again! That really was a treasure of an experience. 🥰 We are now reading “Anne of Avonlea” at their decisive request. Other favorites for the month included “Mexican Gothic” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (and this from somebody who claimed they couldn’t read horror!), “Airplane Mode: An Irreverent History of Travel” by Shahnaz Habib, “Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay” by Elena Ferrante, and “Becoming Duchess Goldblatt” by Anonymous (I am grateful to @jenawesomesbookshelf for recommending this one for my #12booksby12friends challenge!) “Daisy Jones & The Six” by TJR gets an honorable mention as an outstanding audiobook, even if the content of the book itself wasn’t my fave. Also, I am *proud* of myself for reading the second book in the Lymond Chronicles, “Queen’s Play,” but I can’t say that I fully enjoyed it. 😬 For my #24countriesin2024 challenge, I traveled to Italy, Mexico, Japan, Iran, and Bolivia (maybe? that one doesn’t fit my personal rule of #ownvoices, but I feel like I learned a lot about the country). The Bolivia book, “An Indian Among Los Indígenas: A Native Travel Memoir” by Ursula Puke was also my read for the #beyondthebestsellers challenge. It only has 184 ratings on Goodreads, but it is a really thought-provoking and vulnerable memoir that I think should be better known. Thanks @grey_reads for recommending it. So that’s a wrap on April! #qotd: what was your favorite April read? Or what are you most looking forward to in May, in books or in life? (I am looking forward to my kids getting out of school. Algebra is stressing us out. 😅🫠)

“I’d rather die with a blade in my hand, or at least with fire in my heart, than live as the shadow of the shadow.” — The Wolf and the Woodsman, Ava Reid 🐺 » What books are you hoping to read this month? 📚 Rest assured, I have seemingly left behind my romance stage and moved back into my fantasy/magical realism norm 😂 Tbh though, I’m not even sure if I am going back into fantasy, but it’s what the mood reader in me wants right now, so we’ll see what happens. I’m also feeling a mystery tick, hence why Silver Nitrate is in my tbr stack too. I also want to read more of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s works because Mexican Gothic was so good, and I bet the rest of her books are, too. My only problem currently with it is that the main character’s name is Montserrat, which is also the name of a font, and as someone who works in design and marketing, it’s all I can think about when I read it 😅 So I’ve put that aside until I can be an adult about the character’s name and am currently diving into The Wolf and the Woodsman, because Ava Reid is a queen 🥰 #silvernitrate #silviamorenogarcia #thewolfandthewoodsman #avareid #thebedlamstacks #natashapulley

•Short Story Reviews• •••••• Lately I have been very into reading short stories. I love finding ones by authors I either already know or want to read, it feels like a very fun peek into their style. Whenever I feel like I’m busy or don’t feel like committing to a big book, these have felt like nice palate cleansers, which I don’t even try to rush and read in one sitting. Instead of reviewing each individually I thought this would be fun. •••••• The Six Deaths of The Saint was actually my first time reading Alix E. Harrow, and WOW. It was an amazing story! The twists, repetition, characters and every detail was handled perfectly. It’s an odd story and I loved every second! I can’t wait to read her novels. That one and the two others on the top are part of a collection from Amazon publishing, there’s 7 books in total, so let’s see if I eventually read them all. The other two were fine for my taste, I didn’t love them. The Lover by Silvia Moreno-Garcia was so good as well. A tale of finding love mixed in with bits of malice, destiny and tiny bits of magic I guess. Her writing is incredible and I want to read everything by her. Lovers at the museum, by Isabel Allende. First off, for some weird reason I could not find this story in its original Spanish (?) so that was a downer. It was an interesting story and I feel like I might like Isabel’s style of writing. I had a run into one of her books in high school and never tried again, but maybe now’s the time for a second chance! •••••• Any short stories to recommend? Have you read any books by these authors? ••••••

Any vampire based I should binge next? When I tell you I haven’t read a vampire novel in a long time that I actually enjoyed, I am being 100% honest. Some of the vampire novels from my middle / high school years were too melodramatic but of course little me ate it up. Now as an adult, the depth I didn’t fully absorb is now more obvious in the books I pick up. Silvia Moreno-Garcia focuses more on the intrigue & adventure within the vampire lore. I definitely plan on re-reading this. This is a great take on the fictional beings we all know and admire since Dracula 🧛‍♀️ #certaindarkthings #silviamorenogarcia #readlatinelit

📚April Wrap Up! 🌦️As the gloomy skies looming over the Pacific Northwest began to part, I read a total of 10 books with a page count of 3,526. In April, I entered a spherical vessel nestled on the ocean’s floor, experienced mushroom poisoning, nearly drowned, fed jam to my neighbor, investigated the death of a high school acquaintance, was refused access to a mysterious castle, met my secret crush at a dog park, tessered across the universe, reconnected with an old friend, made terrible life choices, and traversed the Catacombs of Saint Sebastian. 📕To break it down, I read: 1. Sphere by Michael Crichton 🌟🌟🌟🌟 2. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia 🌟🌟🌟🌟 3. Bag of Bones by Stephen King 🌟🌟🌟💫 4. Homesick for Another World by Ottessa Moshfegh 🌟🌟🌟🌟 5. Grotesque by Natsuo Kirino 🌟🌟🌟💫 6. Big Swiss by Jen Beagin 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫 7. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle 🌟🌟🌟🌟 8. Petals on the Wind by V.C. Andrews 🌟 9. Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin 🌟🌟🌟🌟 10. The Castle by Franz Kafka 🌟🌟🌟💫 (In addition to these reads, I also read 88 pages of The Count of Monte Cristo.) This month was a mixed bag, but if I had to choose a favorite it would probably be Big Swiss with Homesick and Wrinkle in Time coming in as runner ups. I didn’t manage to get to The Goldfinch like I intended, but I was delusional to think I could accomplish all of that. 🍿In addition to devouring these books, I also watched a few films: - Inland Empire (2006) directed by David Lynch - Sphere (1998) directed by Barry Levinson - Bag of Bones Miniseries (2011) directed by Mick Garris - To Die For (1995) directed by Gus Van Sant - A Wrinkle in Time (2018) directed by Ava DuVernay - Late Night with the Devil (2023) directed by Cameron & Colin Cairnes 🌼I hope everyone had a lovely April!

Book 11 of 2024 Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia If you ever meet me in real life and spark up a conversation about books, Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s incredible works will undoubtedly be fawned over by yours truly. This is my fourth Moreno-Garcia book, and it made me feel all the things. Gods of Jade and Shadow is a fantasy inspired by Mexican folklore. I found a lovely short video (1 minute 51 seconds) of Silvia talking about the book, so if you’re curious, I recommend looking up ‘Inside the Book: Silvia Moreno-Garcia (GODS OF JADE AND SHADOW)’ I’ll be writing in more detail about this book on my blog soon. Given that this is a horror book, it totally shouldn't have been a cozy read for me - but it absolutely was 😂 Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a horror novel that follows a young woman named Noemí. When her father receives a concerning letter from her cousin, Noemí is sent to High Place, the family home of her cousin's husband, to investigate. Only, when she arrives, she finds that the home is dilapidated and strange in an unsettling way and her cousin seems incredibly ill. The story unfolds from there, until Noemí has no idea what is real and what is only in her mind. I absolutely love books that mess with your mind, where you have no idea what's real or not, and this book definitely delivered. I loved the writing style/voice of Silvia Moreno-Garcia; it reminded me of why I fell on love with Gothic literature, even as a middle-schooler. There were definitely parts that had my heart racing, but for the most part, it was incredibly cozy. I also really loved the setting, and the way that culture and history played into the story itself was cool to see. I will definitely always appreciate a book that makes me want to learn more about history, on top of telling an amazing story. I can't wait to read more from this author 🫶 Overall, I would absolutely recommend reading this book - but with the reminder that it is a horror novel, so there are still some heavy topics and potential triggers. If you're okay with that, then I think you'll love it! Rating ⭐️: 4 • #bookstagram #booksta #books #horror #gothicliterature #mexicangothic #silviamorenogarcia

📽SILVER NITRATE by Silvia Moreno-Garcia📽 .. My Patreon subscribers always get my full #bookreviews a week before I put them on Goodreads or any other platform. This weekend, they voted on if they wanted SILVER NITRATE or BURNT OFFERINGS. It wasn’t even close. 70% wanted this one. 📽 I did a search of the #silvernitrate hashtag and found some reviews that aligned with how I feel and a few that don’t, so check those out if you like, they’re in my stories. I’m giving it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and I highly recommend the audiobook if you want a fuller, more rich and fulfilling experience. The audiobook brought the characters, setting, atmosphere, and mood to life. The narrator is hispanic so all the pronunciations and accents are authentic (I would have stumbled over some of that in my head). You can read my response on Goodreads at the end of the week—patrons have it now. 📽 What is the last book you gave 5 stars too? .. #bookrecommendations #horrorbook #horrorfiction #goodreads #motherhorror #sadiehartmann #promotehorror #horrorjunkie #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #101hbtrbym #nonfiction #spookyseason #hispanicheritagemonth #latine #silviamorenogarcia #audiobook #audible

💀She walks in shadows.

Read Vrs. Unread, inspired by @bookbecomesher ! But knowing me, you know I had to make it horror tinged. Of course many of these authors can be in more of a speculative fiction category rather than horror, but it’s my account and I wanted to include them so oh well! When I was younger, I used to space out books by my favorite authors and movies by my favorite directors, because I wanted to savor them. I don’t do that anymore because I’ve outgrown a lot of my favorite authors and directors from that time, and I wish that I would’ve devoured everything they’d ever written right then & there, while I still liked them. As an adult, I don’t foresee myself outgrowing some of these favorites, but who knows what the future holds. Anyways, I am still trying to read as much as I can and auto-buy these authors’ new works when I am financially able. Ever wonder what’s on my TBR for some of my favorite authors like Stephen Graham Jones, Octavia Butler, and Mariana Enriquez? Look no further because here is the big reveal. #read #reading #unread #tbr #tbrpile #stephengrahamjones #silviamorenogarcia #octaviabutler #marianaenriquez #junjiito #tananarivedue #victorlavalle #haileypiper #horror #horrorauthors #horrorwriters #horrorwriter #autobuy #autobuyauthors #autobuyauthor #horrormovies #horrorfan #horrorbooks #horrorbookstagram #horrorbook #horrorbookstagrammer

Book Review: The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 My thoughts: This book is absolutely beautiful and atmospheric. The setting of the Spanish golden age and inquisition added so much drama and stakes to the book to create an eerie and luscious atmosphere. The story is quite small and contained, following Luzia as she tries to navigate being thrust into a world she does not understand. She is a wonderful character to follow and explore the world through. This book reminds me of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, the Beautiful Ones and Mexican Gothic with a sprinkle of T. Kingfishers horror. It is deeply romantic but also very literary and magical with some truly grotesque elements sprinkled in. If you enjoy magical realism, I think you will absolutely love this book. #thefamiliar #leighbardugo #leighbardugobooks #theinvisiblelifeofaddielarue #veschwab #thebeautifulones #mexicangothic #silviamorenogarcia #nettleandbone #thornhedge #tkingfisher #magicalrealism #magicalrealismbooks #historicalfantasy #literaryfantasy #spain #spanishgoldenage #thebearandthenightingale #katherinearden #fantasybooks #fantasybookcommunity #fantasystandalone #gothic #gothicfantasy #standalonefantasy #sixofcrows #crookedkingdom #shadowandbone #grishaverse #ninthhouse

Good morning! It’s been so long since I’ve started a post with those words. Today I’m sharing my review for Mexican Gothic. I finally got around to reading this one and I loved it! ‌ 📚 Affiliate Post for @diocandleco 📚 Use my link in my Carrd and my code CANDLEGUY10 to save! ‌ I’m sharing this book with the Fight the Darkness candle from DIO Candle Company. It’s the perfect match for what Noemí goes through in Mexican Gothic. ‌ I gave this one 5 stars: I really enjoyed this book. Mexican Gothic is a perfect suspenseful book that keeps you guessing as to what is really going on. I will admit the true cause of the strange happenings took me out of the realistic world I had been reading about, but overall it was pretty cool. ‌ I loved the setting of this book. Books set in the past always add a little more mystery and suspense over something happening in the modern day. The lack of our modern technology makes finding out what’s going on more fun. I also enjoyed the creepy atmosphere of the book. ‌ Noemí was a fun character too. I’m a sucker for characters that go against the norm. She was more than a traditional socialite and that made her a more realistic character. I also am a sucker for strong female characters, and I love how she never backed down from trying to help her cousin. ‌ Q: What’s one of your favorite books where the main character overcomes a darkness? ‌ #diocandleco #officiallyadorable #mexicangothic #silviamorenogarcia #candlehoarder #candleguy #suspense #suspensfulreads #adorablescents #greatscents #bookguy #candleobsessed #bookobsessed ‌ ‌

Need more twists, turns, murder, and mystery after #Netflix's new adaptation of #TheTalentedMrRipley by #PatriciaHighsmith? Then check out #UntamedShore by #SilviaMorenoGarcia. Baja California, 1979. Viridiana spends her days watching the dead sharks piled beside the seashore, as the fishermen pull their nets. There is nothing else to do, nothing else to watch, under the harsh sun. She’s bored. Terribly bored. Yet her head is filled with dreams of Hollywood films, of romance, of a future beyond the drab town where her only option is to marry and have children. Three wealthy American tourists arrive for the summer, and Viridiana is magnetized. She immediately becomes entwined in the glamorous foreigners’ lives. They offer excitement, and perhaps an escape from the promise of a humdrum future. When one of them dies, Viridiana lies to protect her friends. Soon enough, someone’s asking questions, and Viridiana has some of her own about the identity of her new acquaintances. Sharks may be dangerous, but there are worse predators nearby, ready to devour a naïve young woman who is quickly being tangled in a web of deceit. __________________ 🔗 in bio for catalog Do you have a show, movie, or even video game that you'd like a book recommendation for? 🍄 BOOK REVIEW 🍄 Mexican Gothic Silvia Moreno-Garcia The amount of mixed reviews for this book is nuts! It seems like you either love it or hate it. I got this as a blind date book that described it in much of a different way than the story actually turned out to be. Even though this was a bold and unique story, I found the characters to be flat and one dimensional. I found myself wanting more of a back story for the protagonists. I didn’t know enough about Noemi or Catalina or their past relationship to really even care about their outcome. I can say I enjoy all of the “weirdness” in this book, but it could have been pushed so much further. I felt like the weird, gory moments were sprinkled very lightly throughout. It would have been beneficial, in my opinion, to push the horror aspect a bit further. Unfortunately, this one was not for me, but it might be for you! ⭐️⭐️

》》》 R E V I E W 《《《. . . THE LOVER by SILVIA MORENO-GARCIA @silviamg.author . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. The Lover is a short dark fairytale with Little Red Riding Hood vibes, which I devoured. We follow a young woman who finds a sign that her lover will come from the woods surrounding the home she shares with her sister and her children. The girl has had to work hard all her life, cooking, cleaning, running the shop whilst her older sister has had a life of luxury due to being the more beautiful one. When a handsome stranger comes from the woods in search of a place to stay, the girl believes he is the one for her.... This was such a quick, dark, predictable story, but I really enjoyed it, especially with it having dark vibes of Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf. . . QOTD. certain dark things, silvia moreno-garcia. 🇲🇽🩸🔪🐕 ——————————————————————————— much delayed but take three for the most chaotique book club! we’re already 1/4 of the way thru the yr our commitment is so good! also pls welcome bb rosie, she was such a good model!! i liked this book better than the other i read from SMG (mexican gothic—leave the mushrooms alone!!!!!)—the neon-noir setting just pulses through the page, and i honestly think this would make such a great miniseries—i loved the dog more than anyone else in this, though, and felt completely disdainful of all the male characters in this barring bernardino SMG did do the thing that i don’t like from mexican gothic, which here was to take one of the most interesting women in the book and put her under the mind control of a man—found this v annoying as she had a compelling storyline and would’ve made the subsequent plot development much more complex w more agency in her involvement—as it was she became essentially a doll in this man’s hands and i lost all hope recommend if the aesthetic appeal of neon-noir is for u, and if u want a rly fascinating take on vampires in mexican society and history—a real highlight there
