Fiji Activity Highlight⭐ Namosi Eco Retreat! We have been working with this activity provider for many years and the experience is always unforgettable. Located in the remote Namosi highlands, this area is surrounded by misty mountains and the sparkling Luva River. The retreat is a reconstructed, traditional village comprising 10 authentic-style Fijian Bures and a large dining hall (Valenikana). Here, our students get to experience the interior highlands of Fiji, hear the story about the creation of the retreat, and meet people living in remote communities without internet or mobile phone access. These communities are still mostly reliant on subsistence farming to live a simple, happy, and healthy lifestyle. Our staff had a wonderful time getting to know the work of a few local organizations in our community! Last week, we volunteered at @feedlouisville, @kentuckyrefugeeministries, and @animalcaresociety. During our volunteer time, we prepped over 400 meals, organized donated items for local families, and gave some love, care, and attention to animals who need homes. Learning about coral reefs and marine conservation is especially accessible in Fiji. Here, students have an educational presentation about the importance of corals to coral reef fisheries; active interventions being employed to promote coral community health, resilience, and adaptation to climate impacts; and discuss with Votua Villagers about their traditional relationship to and use of the coral reef fisheries. Iceland Program Recap Part 2! Here you can see Diamond Beach where pieces of glaciers wash up ashore and come in contact with the region’s volcanic black sand, creating a stark contrast and diamond-like pieces of glaciers. Next, The Kerið Volcanic Crater, this volcanic crater lake is approximately 6500 years old. The tomatoes are from Friðheimar Greenhouse, here the students get to visit the horse stables to meet Icelandic horses and have a tour of the greenhouse to learn how Icelanders have harnessed geothermal energy to grow vegetables even in the dark winter months. Lastly, the glacier is Solheimajokull glacier where students suit up for a hike, during which the group learns about the real-time effects of global warming. In an effort to help facilitate the connection between employers and jobseekers, LEDC has teamed with @westernuniversity and @fanshawecollege to develop an automated tool using AI to “scrape” jobs from company websites and broadcast them through city job portals, driving traffic to London. We're using this technology for 39 of our largest hiring employers, with the goal of having our job portals be completely automated by the end of the year.

Another week, another Benefit Bake where we support and highlight the hard work Project Bread continues to do for our community! ~~~~~~ This week we are highlighting their work within the Healthcare system. Project Bread is a partner in MassHealth’s Flexible Services Program which allows Medicaid dollars to be used on “non-medical” expenses to address two social determinants of health – food insecurity and housing stability. ~~~~~~ The Flexible Services Program was launched by MassHealth in 2020 and since April 2020, Project Bread has piloted the program with MassHealth and Community Care Cooperative in 14 Massachusetts health centers to provide nutrition support and address the needs of individual patients who are food insecure. ~~~~~~ Project Bread continues this work in hopes of creating a sustainable system in which food becomes an integral component of healthcare. Plus, we've neatly arranged all the sheets and blankets by adult and kids' sections for effortless organization! Happy Benefit Bake Day! This week we are highlighting Project Bread’s initiative to make fresh produce more accessible. They joined forces with the Campaign for Healthy Incentives Program Funding which allows SNAP recipients to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables directly from farmers. ~~~~~~ This HIP campaign was launched in 2017 and was authorized within the state budget, however, to ensure the program’s permanence, they must pass a bill through the state legislature. An Act Relative to an Agricultural Healthy Incentives Program would create a permanent program to ensure the program’s long-term sustainability, generate new jobs in the local farm industry, give farmers the ability to better protect their land, and account for the increased intake of fruits and vegetables for more than 150,000 individuals. ~~~~~~ The latest on the progress of this bill and the program is that in January of this year, Governor Healey released her proposal for the FY2025 budget which included $25 million for HIP. This was a significant increase from previous budgets of $5 million and should help maintain the program through the next fiscal year. Additionally, recently in February, this bill was reported favorably out of the committee on Agriculture and is now being referred to the committee on House Ways and Means. ~~~~~~ Stay up to date with what happens with this initiative and how you can help by heading to their website.
