Fall creek falls #mammothmarch number 7 (yes 7 😆 ) for me! I finished in 6:02. After getting my medal and leaving I felt extremely sick. We pulled over and I ended up passing out and the ambulance came and gave me an IV. I was severely dehydrated and had an alarmingly high blood sugar level. Just a reminder to HYDRATE! When hiking in the heat, even when you think you already are, keep drinking water!!! What a day. I really had no expectations going into this event. Finish, that's all. I had a great time at mile 10- was going to finish under 6 hours. Mile 13. Mammoth March Training Hike: Delaware State Park was awesome! We easily completed our 8.7 miles with an average pace of 22:06 minute miles! With less than 300' of elevation, this pace was a snap! We had several brand new or newer Hikerbabes, which is always fun, and several from our core group of Training Hikers. The wildflowers were blooming and I added two new sightings to this year's list: Virginia Bluebells and Toadshade Trillium. Our next Mammoth March Training Hike will be approximately 10.3 miles in Knox Co on May 19. I got my first hike of the year in today at Chain O’ Lakes State Park. We completed a 5.3 mile moderate trail in about 2.5 hrs. I felt like this was pretty good for my first hike of the year. We enjoyed the time, stopped to rest a little, look at the wood peckers, and look at the map a few times. Overall, I was happy with my results. This was definitely a reality check for my hiking training. I’ve got to really focus in on strengthening my back, hips, glutes, quads and ankles. This was exciting though because it’s motivating my training for the @mammothmarch in June! My significant other, Adam, was extremely supportive the whole way. It was truly the best quality time that I’ve had alone with him in a long time. I think I’ve now covered pretty much every inch of our beloved #pocahontasstatepark! We hiked 20 miles of trails in 6 hours and 9 minutes with over 40k steps during the #mammothmarch Virginia yesterday… and loved every minute of it! He doesn’t like to bring attention to it much, but I need to point out that my husband has cancer and not only did he crush it 💪 but greeted every hiker around us and in passing with a smile and a hello. ☺️ More details about this awesome event to come! 🥾 @mammothmarch @vastateparks

My poor feet! I can definitely tell it's about time to get new boots. I ended up doing 20 miles in a little over 6 hours for the Mammoth March in Richmond. When I originally signed up I was hoping to challenge myself and see if I could do 20 miles However, between signing up and actually doing it, I've hiked that many miles multiple times on the Appalachian Trail. This was definitely a bit less grueling since I didn't have to carry backpacking gear or go up mountains. I was also pretty pumped about the pace I set. My average speed was 3.4 mph. Overall, it was definitely a cool event and hiking this far in a day is still a worthy accomplishment. March reads! Not a lot of books, but a lot of pages! The Second Coming by Garth Risk Hallberg- a father’s odyssey to reach his troubled daughter, make amends for his wrongs, and save her from repeating his self-destructive mistakes. I didn't love this as much as City of Fire, but it was still a worthwhile read. Chain-Gang All Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah- This was our March pick for Lit Happens Book Club, and I thought it was brilliant! Prisoners fight to the death to gain their freedom. It was brutal but beautiful. Same As It Ever Was by Claire Lombardo- I love this book so much! I feel like Claire Lombardo eavesdropped on my heart and wrote it just for me—absolutely a new favorite author. I'll follow her anywhere. Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry- I read this book when I was 12 or 13 after becoming obsessed with the TV mini-series in the 80’s. I've been telling people it's one of my favorite books ever since. I finally gave it a 2nd read this month, and of course, it's still my favorite. The characters are so colorful and real. Gus, Call, Deets, Lori, July, Clara, my sweet Newt. I'll never ever forget them. And I was sad when our journey was over. Oliverti by Allie Millington- a magical typewriter and an introverted boy team up to solve a heartbreaking mystery. Wile everyone's experience may be different, this is what a #20milehike looks like for me 0-5 miles: This is easy...we got this 5-10 miles: Maybe things are starting to hurt and...wait...what do you mean we are only halfway? 10-15 miles: Everything hurts. It hurts in places I didn't know could hurt. 15-20 miles: We have reach a place beyond pain. Everything is numb. Only momentum, and the promise of finish line snacks propels us forward. While large amounts and in excessive amounts, it’s not the ideal dressing to choose. But in moderation, it is OK to eat ranch! I DO NOT like fat free ranch and I’m not willing to compromise on flavor! I had a great salad with chicken and ranch and I added everything bagel seasoning!!! So yummy! @mammothmarch Oregon! What can I say? I was just simply amazed by all the beautiful things I saw during this hike. The different falls and lush trees and forest. It felt like a dream being there. 20 mile didn’t come without any challenges though. At mile 12, I felt my blisters (due to wearing a new pair of boots last minute) were getting more painful and I felt hungry at mile 14 and a kind lady gave me her granola bar. I can do hard things. It was muddy, slick, and beautiful. My only goal was to finish the #mammothmarch, and I did, wirh a wee but of company from fellow hikers. There was a lot of mud, and some snow was still lingering along the edges of the higher elevations, and the way down into lower elevations was treacherous, which meant taking portions slowly.
Yesterday I completed the hardest thing I've ever pushed my body to do. I did the MammothMarch, the goal is to hike 20 miles in 8 hours. We didn't have perfect conditions, so we (my friend and i) hiked it in 10. At the 15 mile my ankle started to hurt, realized a blister was forming, just before mile 19 the muscles behind my left knee started to seize, my friend was also having some issues too. We hobbled along, gave ourselves and each other positive feedback and kept pushing through.
