My opinion: I was ready to not like this, but it was okay. Alright, I admire a lot from this movie. Firstly, I thought the fight scenes were really solid and well choreographed. They don’t do quick cuts or anything and everyone looks like they’re doing things on their own. And, even though Jennifer Lopez is like one of the last people I’d expect to be an action star but I admit her training is there. Not just in hand-to-hand combat but in gunplay as well. And I admit that Lopez is solid, acting-wise as this gruff killer who has to take care of her daughter whom is out to be killed for revenge. For some reason, Lopez was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for worst actress Okay, some aspects of the story weren’t all that great. For example, moments that kind of devoid any kind of logic, some contrived moments but honestly my biggest complaint are the moments between the mother and her daughter, Zoe. It honestly felt artificial as opposed to any kind of emotional baggage. I get Zoe’s meant to be the emotional core but she was kind of whiny which I get was the point but still, not all that decent. Plus even after she gets along with her mother, I still feel The Mother and Zoe still haven’t got any kind of connection or relationship that made me care about them. Look, I have nothing else to say about The Mother (2023) except just a generic action thriller that isn’t good or bad, just okay. 3/5 rating

The Mother (2023) dir. Niki Caro While fleeing from her illegal arms dealer boyfriend, a pregnant assassin turns herself in to the FBI to become an informant. After the safe house she was being interrogated in is breached, she births her daughter prematurely and is forced to give her up as she goes into hiding. Years later with her daughter's life now in danger, The Mother must now come out of hiding to protect the daughter she never knew. The Mother was a movie that showed up on The Golden Razzies list of 2023 so we decided to check it out. This turned out to be pretty much our first great bad movie watch of 2024! Jennifer Lopez plays a deadly cold-blooded assassin and that is incredibly laughable when you consider that it's J Lo and she's doing nothing to make her the least bit intimidating...y'know besides the smolder. The daughter isn't much better as her acting from scene to scene never really relates to what's unfolding on the screen. Romantic love interest to J Lo is killed right in front of her after a devastating car accident (that totally could have been avoided btw!) and she's just totally chill, she even cracks jokes with J Lo about "Did you loooove him??" =3 nvm the fact that he was viciously executed in front of her hours ago! I wasn't sure how entertaining this one was going to be. I thought it would be solely on J Lo's performance, but the plot was so wild and convoluted that it added to the rest of the movie's badness. The movie wrapped up most of its plot an hour into the movie and still had another hour and ten minutes to shoot the shit. Several of this reminded me of a Key & Peele skit. This movie was hilarious and laughably bad! 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐧 (𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎) ⭐️⭐️⭐️ At a first glance, Mulan seems to be the only live action Disney feature to offer more than a rehash of story beats and musical numbers that were infinitely better the first time around. Indeed, this was very much marketed as a war epic stripped down of all silly sidekicks and belt out vocals in the middle of an important scene, and for that it certainly held my anticipation high. So after a very long time, I finally managed to check it out, as you will excuse me by not paying 20 pounds on top of a subscription and in the context of a worldwide pandemic to the greedy Disney committee that took this decision in the first place. But, better late than never! The film makes the most out of some yet unseen New Zeeland landscapes, incorporating CGI quite seemlessly for the most part, to make it stand out after the effects heavy The Jungle Book and The Lion King. The cinematography, score by Harry Gregson Williams and shots selection is all on point, and technically speaking there’s hardly anything at fault there. Yet for all its visual sumptuousness, Mulan is an overall dull effort that could’ve been so much better if it had a more bold vision and not such a glossy sheen. Storywise it recycles the same character ark for its hero, but whereas the original had some charm in its various montages, here everything’s rushed and devoid of magic. I found Liu Yifey to put in a very wooden and bland performance as the lead and the biggest problem I had, I didn’t feel the growth of her character by the end. Add in a pretty lackluster villain and a witch that should’ve been the main antagonistic focus, but ended up a total misfire, and a great waste of actress Gong Li’s talents. Also underutilized is Jet Li as the Chinese emperor, while Donnie Yen has a strong presence, but nothing we haven’t seen him do better. In the end, this was just fine, not a disaster by any means, but still a studio driven product that doesn’t exactly reminisce of compelling “wu xia” films.
j’ai enfin regardé mulan (illégalement je l’admets, je voulais le voir mais sans lui permettre de gagner de l’argent. j’aurais pu boycotter tout simplement et ça aurait sûrement fait de moi une personne meilleure mais ça me va aussi de pas être une très bonne personne) tout n’était pas mauvais mais dans l’ensemble c’était pas bon en tous points (les points uniquement cinématographiques et les points plus importants genre politique). il y a eu des moments où j’ai ri et j’ai bien aimé la “méchante” qui n’en ai pas une (ps: c’est pas un spoil c’est juste la façon dont le personnage est représenté et c’est justement ça qui m’a plu même si bon c’est pas nouveau à hollywood de faire ça). voilà pour les points positifs. je ferais pas les points négatifs, trop long. même si disney reste disney, il ne fait aucun doute que le dessin animé est excellent et reste cher à mon cœur pour de multiples raisons. #mulan #nikicaro

THE REVIEW Don't go into this movie expecting anything but a straight-up action movie with a little heart and soul around the protect your kid at all costs storyline that goes along with it. That said, Jennifer Lopez handles the action scenes well and puts in a decent performance as the conflicted mother of the title. She more than handles her own against the bad guys led by the crazed Joseph Fiennes in this latest Netflix actioner as she teaches her kid how to protect herself in dangerous situations that leads to a bloody climax in the wintery wilderness where the bullets and fists fly. Co-star Omari Hardwick, who was really good in the Army of the Dead movie that Netflix also made, gets some small scenes here but could easily headline his own action movies if given the chance and I hope he does in the future. Lopez, as always, looks absolutely stunning on screen, and this is her best movie in some time, but it is a straightforward action movie that doesn't throw up many surprises along the way but if your after a kick ass action heroine movie then The Mother will be just what your after and it's definitely an entertaining, if not predictable action thriller and I would definitely like to see more Jennifer Lopez action star vehicles off the back of this movie as she definitely has what it takes. Il Film della Settimana: NORTH COUNTRY -STORIA DI JOSEY- Dopo la fine del suo matrimonio Josey Ames torna, insieme ai due figli, nella sua città natale in Minnesota dove trova lavoro presso le locali miniere di ferro. Qui, come le altre colleghe, inizia a subire i soprusi da parte dei colleghi per il solo fatto di essere donna. Ispirato ad una storia vera ed interpretato in maniera eccelsa da una bravissima Charlize Theron, "North Country - Storia di Josey" è non solo film di impegno civile doverosamente dalla parte delle donne e dei loro diritti (racconta fondamentalmente la prima "class action" al femminile negli Stati Uniti), ma anche ottimo cinema "classico", in cui la provincia americana viene ritratta in maniera impietosa e, purtroppo, molto rispondente al vero. Le svolte narrative sono, effettivamente, quelle che ci si aspetta -anche nella parte processuale- ma che comunque si accettano volentieri, trovandosi di fronte ad un film che si vede fatto col cuore da tutti coloro che vi hanno partecipato. Diretto con mano sicura dalla neozelandese Niky Caro e con un cast strepitoso, in cui oltre alla Theron sono da menzionare le interpretazioni di Frances McDormand e Sissy Spacek (ma anche Woody Harrelson fa il suo) è un film la cui visione diventa quasi moralmente obbligatoria anche oggi nel 2023, nonostante sia un'opera del 2005. The Mother isn't bad by any means, but it's generic. #netflix does these types of movies all the time. JLo is the only thing that makes this watchable. She kicks ass and she looks good doing it. She also does a good job with the relationship between her and her daughter. Outside of her(and to some extent, the actress playing her daughter) there isn't much to love here. The action is fun, but it's so overly edited that it takes away from the enjoyment. The story is pretty bland and filled with clichés, which is weird because the script was written by three people, all of which have done good work in the past. What's more, the movie wastes a lot of talented actors by giving them almost nothing to do. Unless you're a fan of #jenniferlopez and want to see her in an action role, you can skip this movie.
