Wow - what a buzzing crowd at the Chau Chak Wing Museum, University of Sydney this evening for the launch of @writtenoff.club Literary Journal. It was an utter pleasure and privilege to have closed the evening with an excerpt from my poem 'Luscious Lila's Lyric Book of Lovers', and to have met so many wonderful people, including those who have in the past been on judging panels for my poetry, and selected, published and embraced my poetry with such warmth. You make me feel so supported as a creative. 🙏 If anyone happened to take any pics of me reading on that somewhat intimidating fancy pants there's-nowhere-to-hide platform, I would be most grateful if you would share them with me. Thank you to @pacificvideoaus for this live photograph from my Short + Sweet Sydney Festival dress rehearsal a few weeks ago. ✨️ I like this shot because I can see the sincerity of the moment coming across the way I felt it inside. I wrote, directed, and performed this little monologue myself. I didn't quite know how it may have appeared to an audience until I saw these dress rehearsal photographs, which I appreciate very much. They are wonderful mementos of what was a very special piece to me. 🙏 In this photograph, I am bathed in stage lights, and even my skin has a golden glow to it. I used to hate the colour of my skin (a topic I explore in this monologue and also my book). Self-loathing was tied to my shame over being a 'coloured' person. Quiet//I have relished the quiet time away from my daily grind to immerse myself in saol cruthaitheach. This does not necessarily mean I am artistically 'productive' the entire time. Pink//this dress I alternated with the blue for my @shortsweetfest Banana Girl run. Last night I was awarded Judges' Choice runner up, which is most pleasing indeed. Particularly considering most others in the lineup were professionally trained actors, and I was just a blow-in poet. I gave it my heart, and I am happy with what I created. 💖 I took this self-portrait as a memento of the staircase and reading nook I hung out in pre-show each night. I'd read to distract and calm myself during Act 1 (I was on during the latter half) before pacing the hall as nerves kicked in at interval. 🩷 Next week, I shall be flying off to Ireland for my first international writers' residency, which has been in the works for almost a year and is finally about to happen. There is a lot of vulnerability that goes into getting oneself up on a stage to share one's heart. It terrifies me a little, every single time. I sometimes get asked whether I'd like to pursue acting as a *thing*. I'd never say never, but the short answer is no. I am first and foremost a poet. Writing is my passion. Whilst I love watching theatre, I have dipped a toe into it as a vehicle for my poetry.
