FIVE absolutely incredible women. My goal was to enroll 10 people in this program. Suffice it to say I was pretty down on myself when I only enrolled five. Fast forward to our retreat this past weekend, and I AM SO HAPPY I am not in control of everything. Having only five photographers there was one of the BEST things about the retreat that I never saw coming. In fact, I will intentionally keep the group small moving forward, because it allowed for so much more personalization and depth with each person. This mastermind is designed to unpack what each person's creative purpose truly is, so that we can see it come to life in their work, which enables them to FLOURISH in their artistry, business and personal lives. The retreat gave us the opportunity to apply each person's unique vision within each session by taking a collaborative approach. So rather than me exclusively showing everyone how I shoot, we explored what it looked like for each person's creative purpose to come to life within the context of each session. These women are incredible. I LOVED really experiencing how each person is different and creates differently, and I found so much value in seeing how everyone complemented one another and learned from one another because of those differences. *We're not supposed to be clones of one another.* We truly are all created uniquely, and that is a gift. Seeing that come to life in *so* many ways throughout this retreat was a blessing. How I handle these requests:👇 🚫 I don't give out RAW files. I want creative control of my final product. 🚫 There's no such things as FREE exposure. Your time is not free. ⚡️If you're doing a session because someone promises to send you clients, you need to reverse that request and craft a contract for that agreement. "Send me a bunch of clients and for x amount, I'll shoot your for free." ⚡️I contribute to the charities that are meaningful to me every year and I need to get paid to work for you just as you get paid as an employee of the charity. ⚡️If you only need one photo, I can certainly click the shutter just once for $20. 🚫 Yeah I don't want to work for cheap for a lot of business because all I'm doing is working hard-er, not smarter. ⚡️A promise of a better fee next time? Sure, as long as you pay that better fee for the next job now and please sign this contract with your promise in writing. 🚫 If I can't use your images on my own website, the very way you decided to hire me, it's a deal breaker. When photographing families with young children or babies you should have one main thing in mind.... Do whatever you need to do to make sure the baby or babies feel safe, secure, and comfortable. When photographing families with young children or babies I can do most of the photos with them in the parents arms. Like in this set for example, I took all of the headshots of the twin babies while their were safe in their parents arms. These little ones were pretty shy so the only time they really ventured out of the parents arms was in the grass to crawl around a little. I simply put on a longer lens and photographed them exploring in order to keep them feeling safe, secure and comfortable. 🥰 You want more posing tips? Six pieces of advice I’d share with my younger self as she stepped into the world of family photography: 📸 Master your craft. Know your camera like the back of your hand, so you’re ready for any lighting or weather. It’s about smoothly adjusting your settings as you go, so you never skip a beat. 🥰 Embrace the imperfections. Technical skills matter, but don’t let the chase for flawlessness hold you back. The most cherished family photos are those bursting with genuine emotions and fleeting moments. The images that have won me awards have rarely been what I would call technically perfect photographs… They’ve been perfectly captured moments. 🧘🏼♀️ Before anything else – create a safe, calm and supportive environment. Families shine when they feel safe and cared for, trusting in your expertise. If you’re not quite there, revisit your practice till you are, or ‘fake it till you make it’ – your confidence will grow, I promise. ❤️ Look for the love. As cliché as it sounds, family photography is the photography of love. Look for moments of love between the people you’re photographing it and capture it. And love has many faces – a tender touch, a shared laugh, or a knowing glance. Keep your eyes open for these expressions of connection. 📈 Your success will depend less on your talent and more on how you market yourself. Yes, really. Get the marketing training, hire the business mentor, read the business books. A successful photography business is far more business know-how than artistry. ⭐️ Success isn’t about money. A bigger business isn’t ‘expected’ and isn’t necessarily right for you. Success is about balance, sustainable growth, creating a business that works for you and the life you want to lead. I've just found out that Juniper berries aren't actually berries. They're a type of cone (like a pinecone) but are round and spongy. ❤ 3 TIPS FOR PHOTOGRAPHING NEWBORN TWINS ❤ ❤ WORK ON THEIR SCHEDULES Twins are bound to wake up at different times, but you must carry on photographing the sleepy twin whilst the other twin is being fed or cuddled. When both are a sleep aim to get photos of them together. It's important to use your time wisely when photographing twins as the session may last longer then a normal newborn session. ❤ ALWAYS HAVE AN EXTRA PAIR OF HANDS I always work with an assistant during any newborn session, and it is especially important to have an extra pair of hands whilst photographing twins for safety and reassurance to the new parents. If you don't normally work with an assistant it's advised to hire one for a twin newborn session. ❤ USE SIMILAR COLOURS BUT NOT THE SAME. I would suggest using similar tones but different colours/shades, this way when you photograph the twins separately it's easier to work out who is who especially if the twins are identical.
