As I walked my daughter to her first school residential trip, which was also her first ever night away from me, it dawned on me that during her 4 night stay, I might finally get an inkling of what it was like to be the other parent… But let’s be honest, I will never understand what that feels like. I’ve had precisely 3 hours of sleep. I’m unwell (again 🙄) and exhausted. Not a great combination. Let’s talk passports and single motherhood. Last year I applied for my children’s first passports and this was my experience: * Anyone who has parental responsibility (PR) can apply. * I didn’t HAVE to put the other parents’ details down. There’s an option to explain why I wasn’t able to complete the information. * Because my girls’ surname had changed, I needed more proof of their identity (to prove they had been using their ‘new’ name for the previous 8 years…). This included their deed poll document, a piece of evidence that shows the new name being used, for example NHS records, child benefit letters or school records AND written consent from everyone with PR. The last one baffled me as in order to get a deed poll document for an under 16 in the first place you need written consent from everyone with PR. 🤷🏽♀️ Even with all of the extra information, the passports were in my hands less than a fortnight after pressing submit. POV since 2pm when I logged off after two day’s working remotely. This isn’t a woe is me rant looking for attention, just a gentle reminder while I’m stuck on my butt having a pity party because the burnout is creeping in again and I really cbf’ed making dinner .. Sometimes you just have to stop and listen to your body. Sometimes you push and push and push to get through the daily grind but you’ve got to stop and listen to your body. And I know you probably think if you stop you won’t get going again, but you have to listen to your body. Otherwise you’ll burn yourself out completely and your body will force you to stop. Mumma’s watch that burnout. Mumma bears adjust those expectations and set yourself realistically achievable goals. You cannot pour from an empty cup and as I sit here having a pity party for myself because I couldn’t do a run this morning and no time to rest before starting round two as sick single mum, I remind myself that I have to ask for help. I have to stop giving to anything that isn’t a priority or a necessity. I have to be kinder to my body and my mind and I promise myself that I will take better care of myself. The dishes and washing, they can wait. The floor doesn’t need to be vacuumed today. Emails can wait. Can do online groceries even if a few things are missing. Exercise can wait and the negative self talk about playing the biggest role in our life as mummy, questioning ourselves about things said and not done, has to stop. Teamwork makes the dream work. 🎒Use a backpack to bring essentials with you - including a light rain jacket just in case the British weather does the usual. One of the ways I fit in self-care as a single mum is by sticking to my Friday tradition. I basically sit in my car and eat my lunch in complete and utter silence. It's bliss. There's no shade at my colleagues, we are a lovely team. But as working single mum I am literally talked at and touched 24/7. This 45 minute break is quite often the only time I have to decompress, hear my own thoughts and enjoy the silence. I actually live close enough to work that I could go home, but if I do that I'll end up washing up or sticking a load of laundry on and whilst looking after my home is also self-care in my eyes, at the end of a week of being everything to everyone, I need this time to myself. Everyone has a lot to say about the physical and mental changes that happen to a woman after they’ve had a baby. Nothing ever feels the same again. But for me, the biggest change has been the changes that happened socially. This was hugely down to my husband and I separating but it was also largely down to realising and noticing the distance that I suddenly felt overnight with friends and family, solely as I’d had a baby. People left my life because a) I wasn’t the chosen one and b) they now had different priorities. The loneliness that these changes bring is something that is rarely spoken about. However, the catch is that quite often this is where we really find our people. The people that enter your life at this stage are usually the ones who are your ‘forevers’ - your ride or dies - the ones who you will most likely grow old with because they’ve seen you and built you up and supported you through your lowest and most challenging moments. These are the people who support us unconditionally, love our children as their own, support and shower us with love and remind us that we are worthy of happiness and belonging even amidst the chaos of motherhood and divorce. These are your people. Obviously there are caveats to this, but in the case of your average deadbeat dad, just let him be the kind of father he wants to be. Don’t encourage, remind or convince him to be the kind of father you know that your children deserve. If he wanted to, he would. All of the cajoling in the world won’t make a difference. The children you were trying to protect will realise who was there and who wasn’t. Question - how are we fitting in exercise as single mothers? I’ve really enjoyed working on my fitness these past few months and the way l’ve done it is by joining a gym with a crèche. It’s expensive, but I realised that this is the way I need to invest in myself at the moment and I’m grateful that I am able to afford it. Fewer takeaways + more workouts = hopefully less chance of me popping my cloggs before the kids are 18 leaving the other parent in charge. l’m at my best when I have a routine in place because the structure helps to stop my mind from wandering. However, I find it difficult to implement a routine and damn near impossible to maintain one. ADHD is fun, but l’m getting there. A few things that have helped my ADHD brain maintain a routine are: 🛒Ordering my groceries online every Thursday in order for them to be delivered every Sunday 🥗Meal planning 🧹Keeping my house as clutter-free as possible to make life easier. All of my storage cupboards and drawers are labelled.Literally everything has a home. 🛏️ Planning in rest days to account for the days when I might feel overwhelmed and need to regulate my emotions. 💅🏽Keeping the little things the same. I cannot tell you how painful I find making even the tiniest of decisions - even as inconsequential as my nail colour. Knowing that it’s always red - Shade 756 to be precise - just makes my life feel easier and gives me more time to procrastinate over other things. Being a single mum is a full time job in itself, so I had no business giving myself another job to do when I decided to declutter my entire house towards the end of last year. It has taken me the best part of 6 months, but I got there. The house is calmer and that feeling of dread I used to get when coming home has thankfully disappeared. If you’re also in your decluttering era, this is how I did it: 👇🏽 ⭐️Start small. Don’t try to tackle your entire house in one day. Instead, focus on one room or even one area of a room at a time. This will make the task feel less daunting and more manageable. ⭐️Create a system. Whether it’s sorting items into piles or using storage containers, having a system in place will make it easier to keep things organised in the long run. ⭐️ Get your kids involved. Encourage them to help you sort through their toys and clothes and donate or sell items that they no longer use or wear. Not only will this teach them about giving back, but it will also help to keep their own spaces tidy. ⭐️ Make decluttering a regular part of your routine. Set aside a few minutes each day to tidy up and put things back in their proper place. This will prevent clutter from building up and save you time in the long run. FYI - you guys are the best 🥰 As you will all probably know by now, I’ve been through the ringer with post-separation abuse. It’s been hard. A couple of days ago, I really felt like giving up posting on social media because the other parent was committed to monitoring my posts and helpfully sending me screenshots of the bits he didn’t like. It was getting me down. I already felt like he held a lot of indirect control over my life by only making himself available to parent for 2.5 hours a fortnight and paying not one penny in maintenance. But as with pretty much every life decision over the last few years, I asked you lovely lot for your opinions and the general consensus was that you appreciate my posts about relatable solo-parenting and managing high conflict/toxic other parents. The more replies I got, the more I realised that there is a need for a safe place where single and solo mums can come to let off steam, support and empower each other. Do you ever sit there and wish things were different? Do you wish you had more free time? More financial freedom to do the things you want with the people you love? A year ago today, I went on maternity leave. I knew I'd have the best part of a year off and then I'd need to go back to work full time and leave my baby with someone else! During maternity leave I decided to start my own online business after seeing my mentors posts about time and financial freedom! My baby girl is turning 1 next week and I'm now working 3 days a week! She spends a day with a childminder and 2 days with my mum. She's incredibly happy and I feel like I have a fantastic balance right now! I get to spend most of my week creating incredible memories with my daughter and we have the time freedom to do what we want! What I also love is that I know this time next year, I'll be working full time on my business and will have the time and financial freedom to do what I want when I want! Moral of the story is, if you have a wish, a goal, or a dream, don't ignore it! Life is far too short to be dreading days, wishing that you were in a different position or just feeling stuck!
