Met Office have issued an Amber weather warning as #stormisha is expected to bring very strong winds and rain from the evening of Sunday 21 January through to the morning of Monday 22 January for Fermanagh and Met Éireann has issued a yellow weather warning for wind during this period also. We strongly advise the public to avoid wooded areas, sites with trees and areas on high ground within the Geopark. The power of the sea, the lure of the waves. Spray so ferocious it makes it’s own weather, creates a rainbow with the light peaking out from the cloud over my shoulder. Here’s the thing, there’s a lot of discussion about how AI will impact photography, but so much of this is about the moment I hit the shutter. The back story. The moment. The journey. We lurch from one fear to another. It’s the experience that wants to be conveyed, without that it’s just a bunch of meaningless pixels. Photography has always been seen the poorer sibling of art and representative landscape photography? Heck, right down at the bottom. I love it though. I love the moment. I love the effort. The early mornings, the disappointments. They’re all part of it. Why would I be afraid of a computer recreating a simulation of a landscape? And if it steals my job as a photographer then so be it. It’s just a job. I’ll still go out, still feel the wind and rain, still depress the shutter at the moment it all means the most to me. Surely, at the end of it all, that’s the only thing that matters? In 2022 I was lucky enough to visit Redmire through an invitation from Tony Protheroe of The Crabtree Society. Imagining my first few minutes to be standing at the dam in silent awe my plans of spiritual enlightenment were met by devastation. Storms Dudley and Eunice were doing their thing and had bought down several trees over the otter fence. Consequently, my first introduction to Redmire was one of mucking in with Tony (left) to clear the logs as Les Bamford (right) got to work with the chainsaw. A huge alder had also fallen across the fence at the shallows but a rapid response pro team were called in and very quickly dealt with a problem that I thought would take days. The wind continued that night and for safety's sake we all slept in our cars.

Glenco last February 2022. We were actually there hiding from storm Eunice or was it Franklin or Dudley? that hit the west coast of Scotland and the UK at that time. We were staying in a the beautiful, well sheltered area of Glenco valley. We did get a bit of rain (and we were still trying to fix a roof leak, that eventually sent us back home) but it was stunning looking out onto the loch and mountains, especially when the snow came. It was mostly beautiful and freezing cold with bright sunshine. Our perfect weather. ‘Caesar Returns’ The date was February 14th 2022. Storm Dudley was battering the UK and this is the result of my attempts to capture storm waves at Cleveleys during that storm. As I watched the Irish Sea raging and battering Cleveleys’ sea defences, just trying to stay on my feet against the ferocious gusts was a real effort. Nature was putting on a spectacle. This was a demonstration of power. Nature was the boss and she was reminding me (and anyone else daft enough to be out at that time) of this loud and clear. Trying to capture waves in such brutal conditions was exhilarating. I was covered head to toe in waterproofs but got absolutely soaked. Van mijn moeder kreeg ik altijd haar uitgebloeide orchideeën mee en was ze steevast verrast als ze weer uitkwamen! Ik heb er nog één die ik in januari nog van haar kreeg … nu koester ik deze natuurlijk nog meer dan tevoren. In februari van dit jaar maakten we een meteorologisch wonder mee. Er was namelijk sprake van een “drielingstorm”. Stormen kort na elkaar komen vaker voor en worden tweelingstormen genoemd. Maar in februari was er sprake van een drielingstorm - Dudley op woensdag, Eunice op vrijdag en Franklin op zondag - de laatste keer dat dit gebeurde is bijna honderd jaar geleden: in 1928. Een drietal van mijn geliefde personen zijn er niet meer… De drieling storm zijn voor mij een symboliek van de ravage die zij na hun dood ons/mij hebben achtergelaten. Storm Dudley nam mijn moeders’ laatste adem mee en Franklin trok de lievelingsboom van mijn man uit de grond. In Indonesië groeien orchideeën niet binnen in een mooie pot, maar buiten aan een boom. Dit inspireerde mij om de uitgebloeide orchidee vast te maken aan een dikke tak van de witte Magnoliaboom… Hoe mooi kan het leven na de dood tot uiting komen? The landscape is changing to the north of the Courtyard no thanks to Storm Arwen and quickly to follow Storm Dudley! We had to take the decision to fell the whole site due to safety reasons so our new woodland walk is lacking a bit of woodland now 😕 It's fascinating watching the machinery at work however, and the smell of the freshly cut timber is fabulous. There are always silver linings - the wood will be used sustainably in our biomass system to heat the Courtyard business units and residences, and the site will soon be replanted. #regeneration #sustainability #woodlandwalk #biomassenergy #newplanting #pine #stormarwen #stormdudley
November's #StormArwen followed by #StormDudley severely damaged our woodland on the Oak walk, resulting in closure for public safety. Wednesday finally saw the start of work on (unfortunately) felling all the trees so we can reopen this Kirkharle walk. Hopefully this is a good time to post this and it won't upset or offend anyone. We have seen so many greenhouses destroyed over the last winter from storms, particularly the alumium ones. This can put some people off from gardening. Especially if you have spent several hundreds of pounds and the greenhouse gets destroyed even before you start using it. I have waited few years saving up to buy a greenhouse from a very well known british company however after doing a lot of research decided against it, instead decided to build one myself from scratch knowing fully well that it won't fall apart too soon and it will be strong enough to take on the wind. I would like to share my experience with you so you can consider a self build greenhouse rather than shop bought one. I built this greenhouse from scratch at the end of last year. It has been standing in an unsuitable part of the garden which is exposed to the prevailing wind. It has stood up to and survived Storm Malik, Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice. Time for some more 2022 weather stuff & there's been a lot of it. Seriously, you have no idea...when I moved down 15 months ago I was obviously a bit more wind & precipitation, which was fine...but the state of flux in South Devon weather-wise is so life affirming. Obviously taking snaps of torrential/horizontal rain isn't quite so easy, or instagramable, so I present here a selection from the past few weeks. This includes a particularly windswept Beesands from 3 weeks ago, & a very lively, sunrise soaked, incoming Spring tide from last week, and an ominous-looking storm cloud over Dartmoor viewed from here in Dartmouth.
