McDonald’s, Chelmsford (27Apr24). Food: 6/10, Atmosphere: 5/10, Solo diner rating: 9/10. McDonald’s is no longer the cheap eats destination it once was. Even with the incredible hike in prices from shopping to restaurants this is still an expensive place to dine for the quality. I chose the limited edition Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese which was the same as the usual one but with added lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. It was good enough eat, but I still maintain that the bun, which is the same as the one for a single quarter pounder, is simply not big enough for all that meat. Plus the burger slides off the bun and you end up with just meat and sauce. Anyway the fries were ok but still undercooked in my opinion. The gallon of Coke Zero washed it all down. Street Burger Gordon Ramsay (26Apr24). Food: 7/10, Atmosphere: 7/10, Solo diner rating: 7/10. This burger joint is pretty good. For starter I had the #macncheese (creamy and mustardy with a crunchy top - just how I like it). My Hell’s Kitchen burger was billed as being extremely hot but mine didn’t have much chilli heat at all. It was however juicy and not too big for my mouth which is a plus in my opinion. The sticky toffee pudding was cold and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream - sound enough but would have preferred it warm. The offer of £20 for a burger and Koffmann fries (this I presume is derived from the great chef #pierrekoffmann and #jamieoliver also features these on his menu) which were slightly flavoured with vinegar, were crispy and well cooked, unlike the anaemic stuff you get from McDonald’s. In the O2 venue itself you have to pay £20 for a bog standard burger on its own so in the scheme of things and for the area it is a modest bargain. Still can’t reconcile myself fully with paying that for a burger though! The chickpea soup itself, flavoured with just pasta, salt, pepper and mixed spice, was ok but not great. It’s more like a tomato pasta sauce than a soup. Very healthy though! My main complaint is that you are supposed to fry the veg with mixed spice at the beginning but the spice just sticks to the base of the pan and gets burnt whilst the veg is tenderising. i consider @mcnallyjackson to be my home bookstore, and one of the main reasons is that their buyers have always been great at stocking a good selection of translated korean literature. this isn’t a recent thing they’ve hopped onto as korean culture has been getting more popular in recent years; i’ve been going to mcnally for over ten years and have been consistently impressed, often finding titles i hadn’t heard of otherwise, even as someone who generally keeps up with what is being published. last weekend, i finally tackled the task of going through my shelves and doing a trim so i could get these piles of books (last photo) off my floor. i believe that a personal library should be a living, breathing thing, one that changes by contracting and expanding, bc our reading tastes should also be living, breathing things that morph as we grow and develop and live. the only problem is that now i have boxes of books in a corner of my living room bc idk what to do with them and i don’t have a car in brooklyn and books are heavy … anyway, we’ll deal with that eventually. after i reorganized my shelves, i went into the city to see “exhuma” with @thebroadertheme, and i had time before the movie, so i dropped into mcnally jackson and bought kim hye-jin’s COUNSEL CULTURE, translated by jamie chang, and yun ko-eun’s TABLE FOR ONE, translated by lizzie buehler. yun’s book was already on my list, but i hadn’t heard of kim’s before, so thank you, mcnally, for that! 🥰 i also bought three more blackwings bc i am unable to resist blackwings … which i only use to annotate books as i read, so i have so many pencils, many of which haven’t even been sharpened and are still new! and yet! i still buy them when i see cute ones i don’t yet own! maybe it’s a no, thank you, to mcnally for doing such a great job of stocking blackwings, too?!? . . . We’re back on the #tabletoptuesday game with the help of a few friends: @byronrisdon who valiantly trekked the three bags of @mottahedehchina I acquired this @hpmkt back to DC in his car with little to no (visible, at least) judgment @kaylaswall who told me the fantastic story behind these plates, which tabletop enthusiasts might recognize for their vague semblance to the iconic Tobacco Leaf pattern: these “ghost plates” as I’m calling them, are Tobacco Leaf plates that developed an imperfection after the first (blue) printing, causing them to be pulled from production, and passed into my grubby paws at the Mottahedeh sample sale @storyststudio sold me the beautiful block print fabric she brought back from India; I love it with the colorful block print napkins from @largercross, both found at @thetickingtent🎪 Cup carted back from Oaxaca with @designleadershipnetwork; silverware amassed between @paulbertserpette @antiquedesignct and @battersea decorative arts fair. #willtravelforsilver #tableforone

#jamieoliver Epic Tomato Bread from the #5ingredientsmed #cookbook requires some chopping and blitzing but is quite straightforward. You heat sliced chorizo and garlic tossed in olive oil in the oven alongside a ciabatta loaf cut longways into two. Then you blitz half the cherry tomatoes with red wine vinegar, olive oil and seasoning. You then layer over the ciabatta the tomato puree, then quarters of the remaining cherry tomatoes, place the chorizo on top then grate manchego cheese on top. It’s quite fresh tasting with all those tomatoes and if you use good chorizo it’s not very oily. I am working in my studio in Wales, watching the rain, with the heating on… in APRIL 😳 This was taken last month on my little solo adventure to SE Asia 🌞 It’s been soooo long since I’ve headed east so took the rare chance to take a little ‘me’ time. Was very very strange being away from my boys but they didn’t seem to miss me one tiny bit 😂😕 and I got to have a mini backpack adventure like back in the day! Sumatra was an absolute stunner, and Thailand, well, it’s always in my heart 💚 So many people have said to me that they could never solo travel, but it’s sooooo refreshing and liberating.
