I usually use lots of pinks in my flower pots but decided to just do mainly green and white this year. I was inspired by some of the container gardens by @carmenjohnstongardens She is in a totally planting zone than I am and I needed some plants that can hold up to the Texas heat so mine are somewhat different than hers. I did learn about the Kimberly Queen ferns from her sine I love the look of Boston ferns but they would cook on my front porch in the Texas summer heat. I leaned about Pentas from my local garden center last year and they bloomed all summer until sometime in December. I had never heard of Torenia before but saw Jenny from @creeksidenursery using it and I love the white one. Simple swaps like making your own sandwich bread, ice cream, pasta sauce etc can be a good place to start. “Low tox living” doesn’t have to be all or nothing. It can be “here and there”. I’ve seen some toxic ass people in the low tox space. Don’t let them convince you, you’re doing it wrong if it’s not their way. Just do what you can with what you’ve got. SGW Dragon Fruit Trellis Set Up (2023) Here’s a video of my dragon fruit trellis set up during Spring 2023 in Central Texas Zone 8b. During that spring, I made new dragon fruit trellises and transplanted my larger plants into larger containers. Ideally, dragon fruits must be grown vertically up a trellis with branches hanging down the top. Once the plants reach a certain size and age and are fertilized with phosphorus, they may produce flowers on the gravity-pulled branches. I made this video as a promo for live cactus sales and markets in the Central Texas area. (My online store is still in the works for Spring 2024. Meet Miss Peggy Martin the climbing (CL) rose!! There is a beautiful story of how this rose got its name at the end of my post. She has gorgeous PROFUSE blooms from mid April till early May. This is her 3rd year. I cut this rose back nearly to the ground late last summer and this is all new growth 😂. I have plans of stylizing her branches against the brick this year. I didnt plant this pink salvia....I planted the purple Sallyrosa April Night Meadow salvia in the 3rd slide 2 years ago and this pink salvia somehow seeded herself a year ago. I still havent found a Pink Profusion salvia in my local garden centers (and I have looked). So my purple salvia gave me a pink daughter. Is she a mutation? I dont know, but she is one of my favorite plants in the garden 🩷 Bees swarm her all the time. Surprisingly, carrots have been easier than expected to grow. So far, I haven’t hit any issues when it comes to growing carrots. But keep in mind that I follow a pretty strict preventative schedule when it comes to pest control. More about that in a future post. I have noticed that the carrots become sweeter the longer I leave them in the ground. They taste earthier when they are harvested young and get sweeter as I let them age more in the ground. I’m not sure if this applies to all varieties of carrots but seems to be the case with mine (and I’ve harvested twice; in both winter and spring). That being said, I do think you have to be careful here and not leave them in the ground too long…or they can start to split and crack. From what I’ve read, consistent watering seems to be the key. As I continue to grow, I’ll certainly share issues and troubleshooting. Guys, I am growing forget-me-nots for the first time in my life! I am so excited about this. I have no idea why I waited that long, but I can say that I absolutely love the dainty, little, clear blue blooms and that they fit perfectly into the English cottage-style garden that I am trying to create. I bought three plants at a local nursery and didn’t have much hope for them because I thought that Austin is not exactly a climate where they happily want to live. And that might be true, but luckily we are having a relatively cool spring and I think that helps all three plants do well. When the blooms are over, I intend to let them go to seed, hoping that they will self-sow for next year. Is there a plant that you always wanted to grow, but never did? I can only encourage you to do so finally. The joy it could bring may, like in my case, exceed your expectations! Happy weekend everyone! Parts of the garden are lookin more polished, and some parts are planted and awaiting the spring rains and early summer heat. My vision isn’t quite finished but there has been so much work done in the past 7/8 months. This has VERY much been a group effort. I’ve done much of the planning myself, but I have had so much help from my friends and my husband as far as physical work.
