first official potato harvest! ๐Ÿฅ” itโ€™s my first time growing potatoes, and it has been soooo joyful! weโ€™ve also learned a ton! for one, our yield in our pots are much better than our yield straight from the ground. (we had a lot of worms enjoying the potatoes, thatโ€™s ok, yโ€™all have fun ๐Ÿชฑ) and secondly, most of the potted potatoes are still growing and not ready to be harvested. (less factors = more growth?) lastly, we arenโ€™t ready to eat these potates yet, and if you arenโ€™t going to eat them in a couple of days, you must wait to wash them for about a week or two! this is called curing! during the curing period the potatoโ€™s skin gets harder making them last between 6-8 months in a cool spot! hopefully we get another great harvest in a few weeks and by that time itโ€™ll be ready to eat these! happy gardening ๐Ÿฅ” #houstongardening #potatoharvest

Spring 2024 is in full swing! The bees ๐Ÿ arrived early this year, like end of February instead of May. Our Anna apple tree is poppinโ€™ with apples as a result! I usually have to hand-pollinate them. I finally have a very successful crop of chamomile flowers! Transplanted in November. The flowers smell like honey and make a very nice tea. Itโ€™s the same with borage too! Finally got the plants to bloom. The flowers have a faint sweetness - some say they taste like cucumbers. I think the color is beautiful and the bees love it. I just donโ€™t love how spikey the plant is. I may not grow it next year, Jump-Up Johnnyโ€™s are similar in my mind and less spikey, and grow very well over winter. The gladiolus flowers are starting to bloom and are always a welcome site on the table. ๐Ÿ’• The monarda (bee balm) is probably about 5ft tall right now - even taller than last year! Itโ€™s starting to spread too much so I will thin it out in winter this year. Happy spring yโ€™all! The best season for gardening here in SE Texas. Itโ€™s amazing how much of a difference 2 weeks make. #organicgardening #zone9 #zone9a #houstongardening #gardeningwithkids #flowers #ediblegarden #teagarden

Black Beauty Tomatoes I have grown these every year for the last 3-4 years. If you donโ€™t start these early they donโ€™t give as much fruit as other tomato cultivars. I have noticed that Black Beauty flowers tend to be more sensitive to heat than other tomatoes. This is probably why I donโ€™t see as much fruit set in my area as it warms quickly in Houston. I start these in late January. They tend to be leggy by the time I plant them out but it always turns out alright since this is an indeterminate. Sometime around February, depending on our weather, Iโ€™ll pluck off all the leaves except for like 4 inches from the tip and plant the stem deep. You could also try a horizontal trenching method that lays out the stem across your bed increasing root surface area. In the garden I have grown Black Beauty Tomatoes via several methods. My favorite was attaching it to cattle panel in an espalier type method. The least useful support was using stakes and a tomato cage, pointless since they can grow about 8 ft plus and sprawl out almost just as wide. Possibly the most convenient method would have to be string trellis. However, string trellising requires lots of TLC since you have to prune it often and you have to make sure your string trellis is sturdy and long enough. Failure to head that warning will cause your tomato trellis to snap. To grow them in Fall you must start these in late July or they will not ripen on the vine. Of course this is for the Houston area, please try trial and tribulations or your nearest Black Beauty Tomato expert for your local area. In my opinion, if you intend to collect seed from this cultivar then this is the best time to do it. My reasoning behind this is that not many neighbors grow tomatoes during this time of year meaning not much cross pollination going on. Which should give you true to type tomatoes as long as you donโ€™t grow other cultivars. Another method is to stalk a flower early in the morning and bag it as it opens for the first time to ensure self pollination but meh, you do you boo. If youโ€™re wondering, I purchase my initial pack from @bakercreekseeds . #garden #zone9b #tomato #huerta #houstongarden #houstongardening

I had such a lovely #EarthDay ๐ŸŒŽ surprise! I have a Talavera frog planter right by our back door and I noticed some material in the planter that wasnโ€™t part of the plant. Last night I went to look and a startled bird flew out and I was able to see at least one small egg in there. The material is a nest! ๐Ÿชบ Thankfully, mama bird was back in there this morning. I donโ€™t want to disturb her but I grabbed this quick pic. The male bird was chirping at me from the fence in warning so using the Merlin Bird ID app and comparing the pic I got to photos online, it seems to be a #CarolinaWren family! Look forward to seeing if the egg (or eggs?) hatches successfully and watching the baby grow up. #zone9garden #zone9a #houston #houstongardening #pollinatorgarden #pollinatorfriendly
