I had say good bye to my friend Thu tonight. As I sat at the memorial service there came a time when the audience was asked to come forward and share a story. I was frozen with fear, and too upset to speak. I wanted to tell the following story, and regret not being strong enough to do it in person. Thu and I met in the Foothills Hospital. I was recovering from surgery and my friends had hung a pink smiley face flag on the curtain around my bed. One day Thu stopped in the door way of my room and said " I like your flag". A friendship started that minute as we talked, and shared our stories of why we were there. We made plans to walk the hallway when I was feeling better. So we did, walked, and talked. Thu seemed to know when to show up and ask me if I wanted to walk, lifting my spirits out of the funk I was slipping into. We both got discharged, only to be readmitted at later dates. This time it was different. Thu was struggling to recover from another long surgery, and the effects of the devastating cancer were starting to show. Even in this tough time she would surprise me with a visit to my room and an invitation to join her for a walk. As time went on and she was discharged I went to visit her. She always greeted me with a smile, kind words, and asked how I was doing, no matter how much pain she was in. I only knew her for a short time, and I am still learning more about her. Thu was a good friend, and I will never forget how she helped me even when she was struggling with her own battle. THIS IS STILL HAPPENING NOW ! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Dear family, Sitting here in the quiet of Rouen Cathedral having just visited Uncle Charlie’s grave in St Sever cemetery. Even though we’ve visited before, I felt extremely emotional . 100 yrs today since he died and on reflection after yesterday, I think those poor soldiers who were killed instantly were the lucky ones. Those with horrific injuries having to endure such pain must have felt like they were in hell. I’m glad Charlie only survived a day as with his dreadful spinal injuries it would have been as the dr wrote on the Death certificate ‘Regret to say his case was hopeless from the first and had he lived would have been paralysed and a hopeless invalid’ What terrible news for our great grandparents to receive. Of course thousands with dreadful injuries did survive and life for many must have been a life of suffering. Anyway I made up a small wreath of poppies and dried gum leaves I’d brought from home and put it on his grave. Dropped a few extra gum leaves on a few other Aussie graves also. It’s not a cemetery that gets visited like many others and yet it holds the graves of 8348 commonwealth war graves Including 782 Australians. The hospitals were set up in Rouen which accounts for the large number. Studies show that this is extremely common in a woman’s adolescent years - Wasserman et al (2023), Foster et al (2024) - young women are being dismissed, ignored and left without a diagnosis due to a lack of resources, trust and research into women’s health! • This is a HUGE problem! It’s even worse those who exist outside of the norms with our society! This delay in diagnosis can have significant ramifications on a woman’s quality of life and long-term health outcomes. Long term impacts such as dementia, osteoporosis, heart disease and other chronic conditions😕 • Recognising the symptoms of POI early is crucial for timely intervention and management. Stigmas surrounding periods and menstrual health often compound the challenges women face when seeking medical care. So, it is made even bloody harder!! 🩸Societal taboos around discussing menstrual health may discourage women from seeking medical attention promptly. • Additionally, disparities in access to healthcare, particularly among underrepresented minority women and low-income populations, further exacerbate this issue. NHS treatment can be lengthy and exhausting but, private health care is not accessible for everyone!
