Show me your black (or brown) eyed Susan plants! These babies really were the gateway for planting flowers from seeds for me. As a gardener, I feel I am supposed to love spring and summer the most, but it is really fall that has my heart. Black-eyed Susan's are a sign for me that the beauty and bounty of autumn are just around the bend ❤️ 🍃🍂

The flower pinkathon is officially on. 🌸 I have blooms on my Endless Summer® Summer Crush Hydrangea after three seasons. I was drawn to its size and bright pink colour. It is in on the east side of the garden a bit protected by the garage wall and other plants and gets sun up to mid day. It does wilt quite a bit each day and the blooms take on a mauve like colour. I don’t do too well with macrophylla and this is my second time trying to grow one. #hydrangeas #endlesssummer #endlesssummerhydrangeas #pinkmacrophylla #zone5bgardens #zone6gardening #gardensofinstagram #gardenlovers

The cherries are going crazy this year! 🍒 These are Montmorency cherries and they have done sooo well here in our southern Michigan orchard. Garlic chicken.. mmm 😋🧄🍗 Okay no, I won’t be eating this chicken (even though she keeps breaking into my garden and messing up my mulch!) She’s my oldest lady and I quite like her. 😆 But I am looking forward to harvesting and eating this garlic in a few weeks! I accidentally unearthed a garlic plant while weeding today and the bulb was super tiny though. Hopefully they put on some girth soon. It has been soo dry and I haven’t been watering so maybe that’s contributing to their small size this year. 🤔😬 #bufforpington #garlic #michigangardening #organicgardening #zone5bgardens #backyardchickens

Happy Sunday! I am SOOO excited because I have set aside today to plant my dahlia tubers. I have over 40 tubers to plant and it’ll be interesting to see how I fit them all in 😳 I created a general planting guide for the new garden beds and went to plant tomatoes yesterday and realized that sometimes, plans change! No matter, I’ll figure it out. 😂 Dahlia plans include grouping most of them by color with the exception of the Dinnerplates which will get mixed in the border garden. Ideally I’d like to plant all my dahlias in the new garden beds but I don’t think they’ll all fit. Collarettes & anemones will get planted togeher. My morning hangout right now! Whenever I can, I come out here with my morning coffee and just sit. And enjoy. A little bit about this space. We have a tiny backyard, and conversely, a very large front yard that was 100% lawn when we moved here over 10 years ago (and 7 years before I became a gardener). What you see here is the “side” part of the front yard — it’s not on the main road but on the side of our property that sits on a cul-de-sac. We ripped out the lawn border here in 2022 and I tried growing flowers and a few veggies. It turns out that the sun exposure here is so much better than in our backyard that last fall I decided we needed to rip out MORE of our lawn 😃. That’s the bare strip of soil you see in the foreground of the first photo. I’m still getting it ready for planting. It needs irrigation lines and more soil amending, but hopefully I’ll grow some veggies here this summer… just 3-4 more weeks before I get planting! #inmygarden #gardenjournal #coloradogardens #coloradogardener #zone5garden #zone5bgardens #zone5bgardener

Early July 2022. Annabelles are in their early stages of bloom. This time is short lived, for about two weeks, but the blooms are so white and fresh and if there are no rains to weigh them down to the ground, they stand upright and look beautiful!!! This year I need to limit the real estate for creeping jenny as its taking over and choking hucheras. July and august are the best months as the garden is at full bloom before the decline. I've always hated winter, but lately have learned to take inspiration from @Jill Winger and other homesteaders to embrace the forced break. I've switch my garden tools for garden books and even allow myself some extra time on social media looking at beautiful garden pictures and dreaming of the upcoming season. The planning, organizing, and learning that happens during these cold dark months shouldn't be discredited as unproductive hours, rather embraced as an important step in the journey. So here's to remembering the successes and beauty of last year's garden in order to find inspiration for next year's! #garden #gardening #gardeninspiration #homestead #homesteadlife #homesteaders #homesteading #homesteader #homesteadersofamerica #illinoisgarden #illinoisgardens #illinoisgardener #illinoisgardeners #illinoisgardening #zone5b #zone5bgarden #zone5bgardens #zone5bgardener

Who first sparked your interest in gardening? Here is my story. 👩‍🌾 Majka, which means “mother” in Croatian, was my paternal grandmother. I watched her for hours as she let me play in her garden while she worked. But I also learned from my parents, aunts, and uncles. I was given the opportunity to play, plant, and pick. Kids especially like the picking!👩‍🌾 At first, I wanted to have everything perfect in the garden, but what I came to realize is that I didn’t need to “know it all” right from the start. All Mother Nature asked was for the two of us to work alongside each other.❤️ What’s your story?👩‍🌾 #gardenstories #gardeninspirations #inthegardenwithgrandma #beginninggardener #returntothegarden #growyourownherbs #growyourownvegetables #growingyourfirstgarden #startingyourfirstgarden #zone5bgardens #illinoisgardens #memoriesfromthegarden

Plant densely to control weeds and conserve moisture. That’s one of the best pieces of gardening advice I’ve tried to follow. Don’t be afraid to intermingle flowers, herbs, and other edibles. In one picture (swipe) you’ll see a thick patch of alpine strawberries, but the rest have a very diverse grouping of such things as lavender, oregano, green beans, lemon verbena, celery, carrots, marigolds, sage, and so on. If you’ve never tried this before, think about it for next year! It’s both fun and practical. 👩‍🌾 #controllingweedsusingorganicpractices #denseplanting #tipsforbeginninggardeners #inthegardenwithgrandma #interplanting #flowersandedibles #organicgardening #gardenadvice #beginninggardener #growyourownfoods #familygardening #teachthemtogarden #zone5bgardens #illinoisgardening #kitchengardens

Know what this is? Cantaloupe! In May, I noticed little “volunteer” plants (ones that come up in the garden with no effort on my part.) I didn’t plant the seeds in the traditional way. However, I did bury some kitchen scraps in the soil late last fall, and I must have consumed a cantaloupe and used the peel and seeds as compost. I haven’t the slightest idea what variety this is!🍈 When the volunteers showed up in my raised bed, I thought they were cucumbers and thus transplanted a few next to a trellis. But they didn’t grow like cucumbers, and my plant identification app later revealed their true identity! The vines are spreading like crazy, the bees are having a great time pollinating, and I’ve got a few fruits already forming. 🤗 “A wise person turns chance into good fortune” (Thomas Fuller). 👍 I’ll let you know how this opportunity turns out! 👩‍🌾 #gardencantaloupe #canteloupe #volunteerplants #illinoisgardens #illinoisgardening #illinoisgarden #illinoisgardener #illinoisgardeners #homegrownmelons #inthegardenwithgrandma #growyourownfood #zone5 #zone5bgardens #beginninggardener #familygardening #familygardens

Borage is a great companion plant to draw in pollinators. Once planted, it readily self seeds, so chances are you’ll never need to plant it again. The small delicate blue flowers are a pretty edible addition to salads - or capture them in ice cubes. The smallest, newest leaves can be chopped up in salad or added to iced tea, embarking a cucumber-like taste. But most of all, I enjoy watching the happy pollinators on this quiet summer morning.🐝 #borage #borageflowers #companionplanting #flowersforpollinators #zone5bgardens #inthegarden #inthegardenwithgrandma #ediblelandscaping #edibleflowers #beginninggardener #herbs #selfseedingplants

This is the second garden makeover (see part I from June 7) we did on the same property. Our client wanted to give her existing spaces a fresh facelift without an entire landscape demolition. So, we ripped out some of the old and tucked in the new for two drought tolerant, pollinator gardens in her front yard. This space had five old rose bushes that had been in the garden for years. They were the first to come out. The roses had productive lifespans but our changing climate, in addition to beetle kill, was starting to accelerate their demise. Colorado isn’t an ideal place for roses, minus a few native shrub roses. They’re never going to look like roses you see in the the northwest or the south. Roses require a lot of water and are highly favored by Japanese beetles. They simply don’t belong in the high plains, and I would consider them a disruptor to our native ecosystems. We also ripped out all the Lamb’s Ear, which is a great pollinator ground cover, but it can quickly take over a garden if not kept in check. The old drip lines came out as well as an old metal trellis installed by the previous owners. Let’s pause here. The trellis was anchored into buried concrete. Luckily, we were able to dig the concrete out. Making temporary structures in your garden into permanent ones never ends well. Gardens are fluid and change is inevitable. Removing a mistake can be more than it was originally worth, especially when it’s rooted in concrete. Now for the best part! Once we had all the trouble makers out, we amended the soil with organic compost and installed the new pollinators. Some of my favorite additions were False Indigo, Missouri Evening Primrose, and Native Blanket Flower. Evergreen Candytuft and Creeping Phlox replaced the Lamb’s ear while allowing a showy space for the taller plants in back. Two more growing seasons, and this space will be full of color and buzzing with life.

Microdwarf Tomatoes 🍅 My latest experiment to scratch my gardening itch is these fun Microdwarf tomatoes. These are mini tomato plants that you grow indoors. Most varieties grow up to one foot tall and will produce one cycle of fruit. My seed supplier @growersblend suggested a growing light but has grown successfully in a sunny windowsill over the winter months. The varieties I purchased are: 🍅Monetka (3rd pic) 🍅Delice de Neuilly (4th pic) 🍅Jip & Jenekke 🍅Bonsai I’m going to start the first two varieties and hope that I get at least 3 plants to fill my pots.
