I took a risk and planted some seeds early before it's supposed to rain. 🤞 I've got some sunflowers, dill, lettuce, carrots, and peas in the ground so far.. 🌻 I use the fresh dill in my Spiced Up Dill Pickle hot sauce in the summer months with what I have, so I planted a ton!! I'm trying to save some money where I can these days! 🫠 I'm really sad I had to pull my green onions and start over - they were massively gorgeous and SO hardy for three years, but for whatever reason, most of them weren't growing back well. I think I’ve mentioned before that the shed is in a constant state of evolution, and when I got the chance to rescue some French doors off a pal who was binning them, I knew exactly what to do with them. It took all winter to get my head around the fact I’d need to remove a lot of the front, including possibly structural stud work, but in the end I just got the hammer out and got on with it. Worked out better than I could have imagined. The old door didn’t go to waste either, that’s now replaced the battons in the potting area. Well happy! Goodbye April and welcome May! The Forget-Me-Nots are in full flow now and are the signature plant for our spring garden. I do a little judicious culling when they begin to swamp emerging perennials or newly planted roses but largely, I leave them alone to do their own thing and have their moment knowing in another month, they will be over. They bring joy to my heart and I wouldn't be without them!
There are many theories why we are drawn to symmetry - in art, architecture, design. One such is that symmetry occurs abundantly in nature (butterfly wings, flower petals, the human body) and we are wired to be drawn to familiar patterns. Another states that our brain likes order, ease in processing information and symmetry is just simpler to understand than asymmetry. Yet another theory is that symmetry is associated with good health and so we are naturally drawn to a marker of robustness and good genes. . Too much symmetry can however can perceived as boring - a reduced complexity and lack of "danger". What we might derisively call "matching-matching". A balance between complexity and order js therefore considered most aesthetically pleasing. Not too simple, not too complex, not too easy, not too unpredictable. . Perhaps that explains the Japanese concept of "fukinsei" which is about creating beauty in balanced asymmetry. Nature itself is full of beauty and harmonious relationships that are asymmetrical yet balanced, a beauty that attracts, comforts, engages. . This might not look like much but I spent this week planting onions , garlic and carrot seeds in 2 of the raised beds on our lawn ( which we dug up a few years ago to grow our own veg). In the greenhouse I've got loads of seedlings 🌱 growing.....tomatoes, courgettes, herbs, marigolds, lettuce, sunflowers 🌻 and French Beans . We like to plant flowers amongst our veg to encourage the bees. We also allow the borders to grow a bit wild with dandelions and bluebells taking over. This creates some good vegetation for cover which the hedgehogs who visit us like to hide in and habitat for bugs etc. We have a frog igloo, hedgehog nesting boxes, bird feeders, bird baths and bird nesting boxes too. We don't use pesticides or weedkiller, not even on the lawn which is also full of dandelions but this is safer for wildlife . We've cut 13cm diameter holes in all our fences to create a hedhehog highway and our garden is a release site for rescue hedgehogs from our local Wildlife Rescue Centre . It’s May Day Eve which is also known as Walpurgis Night in some parts of Europe and is considered to be the start of the May Day festivities, when fairies and magical spirits come out to cause mischief. It shook so bad it even turned off one of my lamps that is a touch lamp. After lightening that lights up the sky. After trying to calm my shaking Ruger. As a puppy he was found abandoned, during a storm, on the side of the road laying beside his dead mother. After thinking I cannot take this wind and noise and endless dreary another minute. By the way I do believe it’s intensified on the top of this hill. After…. Well after … Then there is calm….and a walk through the garden teaches. The gardens speak strongly, yet quietly of their happiness for those days of rain, for the deep drink of natures pure water.. for the wind to strengthen their roots and stems. Just look at my wildflower garden with zinnia seeds from last years beauties. And the cauliflower growing! And the spinach! And strawberries! And herbs!!! And flowers blooming! So once again my garden teaches me that harmony is required for balance. Surviving the storms gives new growth and understanding. All resulting in inner peace. I am thankful. Do what you love! New blooms this Spring from a transplant I brought back from friends’ gardens last year. So many of the plants I brought last summer from my trip back home (quad-cities) are starting to emerge —Some are just leaves at this point and some are beginning to bloom. With each new sprout, each new bloom I am reminded of the friend that shared and how truly blessed I am. This has become my magical garden of friendships. The gardens so far hold plants from friends in Illinois, Iowa, Florida and Missouri. The garden, just as my heart, holds the memories expressed in the quote above I don’t know if this is my last nest or my last garden — but I do know I will tend it with love and care. I will watch it grow and teach me lessons I still have to learn. I will treasure the ups and downs. I will be grateful. I often wonder and ask myself where is home? Is it just right here inside of me? In these beautiful blessings? In these memories and days that create new memories? Whether you have moved or stayed in place — I do believe it is right there inside of you. After all, home is where the heart is and personally, my heart is full of so much love and blessings… a warm place. Hello I’m Joanna. I started this account a few days ago and wow - I can’t believe I’m only just tapping into this incredibly supportive community of gardeners. It’s good to be here and learning from you all. I’ve been gardening for over 20 years and tending to a tiny terraced house garden in urban Bristol for the past 7. The garden is a little bit wild style - there are a few shrubs and trees giving structure and I have been adding to this with cottage garden planting and a small organic vegetable garden, we call the ‘bottom garden’. I have learned a lot from my parents real-cottage garden in Pembrokeshire. I garden in all seasons, for all seasons. My body really likes it when I eat fresh seasonal food from our patch. Having a crop provides a sense of safety. It’s good for the nervous system. Each year I strive to be a little more self-sufficient and productive. My flowers and vegetables are mostly sown from seed or self seeded. I grow herbs and healing plants for health and household use. Supporting my wellbeing, nourishment and creativity are direct benefits of my gardening. Being present with plants, and connected to nature, the impermanence of everything - death, growth, renewal, the cycle of life, the rhythm of the seasons is so incredibly grounding and healing, and the wonder and beauty of it all makes me happy. I am guided by the old ways and the moon. Recently I came across the term ‘plantswoman’. I am in the process of becoming one. 🌿
