A Ghost Story (2017) This film begins out with a bit of a struggle as you’re forced to sit through, what feels like, 20 minutes of Rooney Mara forcing herself to be sick over eating a pie whilst she grieves over her newly deceased husband. Casey Affleck, the dead husband, then proceeds to wander about the rest of the film as a hooded figure in the form of a ghost. The long scenes strike a great deal of thinking for us, the audience, into how our protagonist feels about what he’s witnessing as a ghost. Dicen unos amigos que nunca hay que dormirse sin tener algo para hacer mañana, según ellos, ese en resumidas cuentas es el secreto de la longevidad. Recién escuché su teoría este sábado y me vino a la mente la película “A ghost story”. La vi por primera vez hace algunos años en el cineforo con mi hermana y hará una semana que la volví a ver. La puse con la intención de dormir mientras mi esposo la veía, sin embargo termine viéndola completa de nuevo. La sensación que me dejó fue similar a la que tuve al verla por primera vez. En la película vemos una pareja compartiendo un espacio, una vida llena de momentos cálidos y sencillos que se ve interrumpida por un fatídico accidente, pero que se nos muestra sin romper la atmósfera tranquila, inmutable que predomina en todo el film. De manera poética se utiliza una sábana blanca para representar un “fantasma” un ser que renuncia a trascender esperando unas palabras, anclado a través del tiempo al sitio que fue su hogar. Una película minimalista con bellos encuadres y reflexiones profundas. Donde la historia se nos va revelando poco a poco, sin prisa. ¿Cuánto importa lo que no se dice, lo que dejamos pendiente? ¿A espera de que palabras nos quedaríamos una eternidad? Muy bella a mi parecer, les recomiendo que si tienen oportunidad la vean. I’ve been trying to watch more movies and series I haven’t seen before. Since my favorite movie is @a24 ‘Midsommer’ why not start by watching more films from them I haven’t seen yet? Tonight my friend wanted to watch a film I was eyeing for a while on @hbomaxes called ‘A Ghost Story’. This film is about a man who died in a car crash, who then wakes up as a ghost and watches his fiancé grieving as she proceeds to sell there house. The film depicts the entire world through the man’s eyes as he essentially lives through a second evolution of the world. He lives on forever, and gets to see his house with strangers living in it then demolished and turned into a corporate office etc. @a24 illustrates a compelling and bigger picture view of what grief is; as well as its consumption was emotionally shocking and both refreshing. The film was done well through its countless phenomenal shots and transitions. I would watch this film again just for the cinematography involved. The way you feel for a ghost, who the audience just witnesses as a man with a sheet on is incredible. The music, the shots the scenes were done so well that you don’t need to see an actor with a visibly depressed/emotionally disturbed face to feel what he was going through. This film isn’t a fast paced, action packed horror film, rather an emotionally revealing film that captures grief in a unique yet relatable way. I won’t spoil the end but I’m taken aback but not surprised by the ending, considering it’s A24. Perché qui stiamo parlando di magia signori, e non una di quelle il cui trucco è sotto il naso. Una storia narrata dal tempo ed il tempo è tiranno assoluto di questo film, privo di regole e mutaforme, che tiene imprigionato il nostro silenzioso e dolce fantasma. I feel like you either love or hate this film. For me I think I can see the beauty but also where it might fall flat. The shots and how it was filmed is gorgeous. The message of the movie, although I’m not sure if I fully understand it yet, it made me feel something. It makes you feel sadness, grief, and loneliness. It also could make you feel small depending on how you may understand the movie. The movie is full of long, dragged out shots of the same thing with very little dialogue. It’s slow and makes you happy that it’s only 90 minutes long. It is kinda confusing but it makes you think about life in a very different way. It doesn’t explain anything and leaves everything for the viewers interpretation. “A Ghost Story” (ou “Sombras da Vida”) não é um filme fácil de assistir. É lento, arrastado, silencioso em grande parte e às vezes confuso. Assim como a nossa existência. E sim, eu sei que há exceções. Dentre algumas outras coisas, Sombras da Vida, como um bom filme existencialista, traz questões sobre o apego, o luto e a nossa mortalidade. E não necessariamente se propõe a responder todas essas questões mas, assim como em nossa própria e breve passagem pela vida, nem todas as questões serão respondidas. E a cena mais impactante desse filme, ao menos para mim, é o “diálogo” entre duas almas completamente perdidas. Pelo amor de Deus, essa cena é tão linda! De vez em quando eu me pego pensando nessa historia e hoje me lembrei de que, um tempo atrás, eu joguei dois centavos de ideias em cima desse filme que é um dos meus favoritos.
