Upgrading my favourite Martin Scorsese film to 4K, yes please! With a director with such an impressive filmography, it can be hard to pick a favourite. But The Departed truly stands out in my opinion among Scorsese’s other films. From an all star cast with incredible performances from the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and Vera Farmiga, a thrilling cat and mouse game between an Irish gang and the local police department in South Boston full of double crosses, betrayal and twists and turns that earned the film four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director for Scorsese himself, it’s one film that I can enjoy over and over again and never tire of. (1983) Dir. David Cronenberg Exceedingly chilling, thematically haunting, and anchored by an exceptional performance from Christopher Walken, The Dead Zone remains one of the strongest Stephen King adaptation's to date and another memorable film from David Cronenberg. If there's anyone who was the perfect fit to tackle a Stephen King story, it would obviously be David Cronenberg. With the insanely vast filmography of his, Cronenberg is literally a master of horror filmmaking and the science-fiction thriller genre. So, it should come as no surprise that The Dead Zone is an intensely unnerving and consistently engrossing ride from start to finish. It's filled with that Cronenberg atmosphere for sure. The story of course focuses on a school teach who miraculously survives a violent car accident only to wake up from a 5 year come, in which he discovers he has psychic powers. I can't help but think back to when South Park parodied did this film. In all seriousness though, The Dead Zone is a fascinatingly well-put together film that fulfils its source material thanks to a fantastic lead performance and sharp direction. It goes without saying that Christopher Walken gives a terrifically memorable performance. He's Christopher Freaking Walken! It's a dramatically subdued, but subtly powerful performance. You can feel his anguish and pain as he's cursed with these psychic powers and he loses the love of his life at the same time. Of course, we get a classic Walken moment when he yells, "The Ice is Gonna Break!". Martin Sheen, Brooke Adams, and Tom Skeritt also turn in solid work. Sheen hams it up with such a bastardly entertaining performance as the political candidate and main antagonist of the story. Cronenberg's mood and horror atmosphere oozes all throughout the film. I love the way that Johnny's abilities and visions are visually and emotionally portrayed throughout the movie. It's disturbing and brilliant at the same time. Overall, The Dead Zone comes highly recommended for both Cronenberg and King fans. The @nationaltheatre had a stunning production of Nye with the fantastic Martin Sheen. So very timely. That was (maybe) eclipsed by Entangled Pasts at the @royalacademyarts A thoroughly thought provoking show, with some pieces that will remain with me forever, their impact was so great. Catch me if you can: 📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀 (10/10 discs) It’s rare to find a film be so fun and almost downright family friendly when depicting a multi year crime spree. This film does just that and is an absolute delight with every scene as time moves one. We follow Frank Abagnale Jr as he runs away from home and starts commuting check fraud to make a living. Leading him to lie, cheat, and steal his way into becoming a pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Leonardo DiCaprio (Abagnale Jr), Christopher Walken (Abagnale Sr), and Tom Hanks (Carl Handratty, FBI). Spielberg at his best and seems to be having so much fun with this crazy true story. Christopher Walken gives one of the best performances of his career and steals every scene he is in. This was young Leo and he showed off his usual charm, but also showed his acting range and never really returned to a role like this after. Tom Hanks not being the charming one is a fun change and it’s a real cat and mouse energy between him and DiCaprio. There is so much to love about this movie, the directing and performances are all terrific. The writing and set ups are pitch perfect. Another note is John Williams’s score and theme for this film are incredible and frankly slept on. 285/500 (Rewatch) The Departed (2006) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 An undercover cop and a mole in the police attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston. This is the performance that DiCaprio should’ve won an Oscar for. I appreciate it more with every watch. You can really feel the anxiety in the way he emotes and delivers his lines. Jack Nicholson is fantastic as well, no surprise. I can’t think of a movie where he isn’t excellent. Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg are equally hilarious and entertaining in their supporting roles. I love the story and the cat-and-mouse element between DiCaprio and Matt Damon. Vera Farmiga’s character is severely underdeveloped, which is unfortunate considering she’s the only woman. She’s depicted as being bad at her job and some of her decisions make no sense. Martin Sheen’s character is also pretty one-dimensional and we don’t get to see much of his mentorship to DiCaprio’s character. Seeing more of that would’ve better rounded out the dynamic between Sheen and Wahlberg’s characters. I think this is my favorite Scorsese film. It’s messy and chaotic, but so much fun to watch. Everyone on screen is bringing their A-game, there’s a few good surprises, and the soundtrack is iconic, if a bit on-the-nose at times. I have some minor gripes with the dialogue, but the iconic quotes and line deliveries make up for that. Strongly recommended.
