But there is a much deeper, darker fear shared by some of the counselors… The fear that one terrible secret they share will be discovered. Star Rating -⭐⭐ VERDICT: It's a draw! This is the first time I've done a book battle with two books from different age ranges but I feel it still works as a comparison as they both suffer from the same issues. Both books had interesting premises and great settings but failed to do anything interesting with either. The 'Shivers' cover doesn't even represent anything that happened in the story and I wish we had got that story instead because that looks fantastic. Meanwhile the 'Point Horror' entry suffers from too many characters who are all forgettably bland. They lack any personality or distinguishing features, so much so that when we got the villain reveal I wasn't even sure which person that was. The stakes are so low in both books too, nothing happens in the shivers book at all, no spookyness of any sort and as for the point horror, there's only one scene with any potential consequences and we come to find out that it was actually an accident and had nothing at all to do with the antagonist. That title. 😂 there was an extraordinarily high body count in this YA Horror. 🎤Sing About Us-….There is a side character in this book named “Johnny Pecan” and the main character is named “Chip Mulligan” which are two separate golf terms. This book had me laughing—which I don’t think is the intended reaction to a romance novel 😬😅 🌹The Girlfriend-I haven’t read this since I was in 6th grade. It was one of the first “scary” books that I ordered from the Scholastic class flyer, after I aged out of The Babysitters Club. With The Body being this month’s #talespointhorrorbookclub choice, I thought I’d read it alongside The Cemetery because both covers had similar vibes and both were purple. Upon reading, obviously very different from each other but Carol Ellis comes through with another amazing book that I’ve fallen in love with! The first book of hers that I read was My Secret Admirer and at the moment it has remained my favourite PH book, but The Body came in at a very close third! 🐉 The Body - 5/5⭐️ where to even start, I was hooked right from the beginning! A young girl who had recently moved to town applies for a job reading to another girl who is left mute and paralysed after an ‘accident’, she’s terrified and vulnerable and desperately trying to tell someone what happened to her. I loved all of it, I would definitely happily read this one again! 🐉 The Cemetery - 3.5/5⭐️ a group of friends play hide and seek in a cemetery on Halloween, and as you could imagine, things go horribly wrong. I thought it was okay, not the strongest read but it still kept my attention throughout! 🐉 Finishing The Cemetery has made it my 100th book of the year and wow, what an achievement for myself! I’ve never read so many books before! Today is discussion day for the November read from @talespointhorrorbookclub ~ sadly I’m working, so I’ll be missing my third month in a row for the IG live discussion. Sucks working Sunday! The Body by Carol Ellis was a great read and my favourite PH of the year so far. No one knows what happened when Lisa Randolph fell off the cliff, because she is now paralyzed and mute. I really enjoyed the mystery around Lisa’s accident, which we don’t learn about until late in the book - the story wasn’t too wild and contained all of the usual PH tropes - creepy phone call, parents going away and mysterious guys!! Definitely up there with one of my favourite overall PH reads. It really surprised me that there was all this high tech surveillance equipment in what felt like a country manor style house, especially for the time it was written (1995). Maybe my memory is clouded and it was not so advanced for its time but it just felt it a little to me. As well as being creepy that they would even have cameras in every room watching everyone it also felt very upper class and to give us, the reader, a feel that the Randolph’s were a wealthy family in their grand big house. Since they have such similar names, I figured I’d read these two together! They were both okay, I enjoyed reading them but I probably wouldn’t again. Neither of them made my top 5, but there’s some stiff competition on that list! 🐉 Silent Witness - 3/5⭐️ The plot was kind of bonkers, I was almost expecting the best friend to still be alive, but that wasn’t the right prediction for this story. Decent story, little bit convoluted, but okay! 🐉 The Witness - 4/5⭐️ plot twist, the mean character is actually the mean character and the one who did it all along! I also just really love the cover on this one, it kind of gives me JAWS vibes from the body on the beach. Melanie selects Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and we get to experience some passages from the book it’s self whilst she reads aloud to Lisa. It’s an interesting choice and I will be interested to see if it plays a part in the the story of The Body as we get further into the book! But this is a Point Horror so anything could happen 😂 (no spoilers as I’ve not read further yet 😘) This got me wondering …. 𝐐. Whilst we’re on the subject of horror,I’m going to have to include my fave YA horror -The Call by Peadar O’Guilin. I love dark thrillers too like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.I’m also a huge fantasy fan.Jay Kristoff’s Empire of the Vampire was epic & I love Joe Abercrombie, so dark but funny at the same time 𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝟗𝟎𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠! I was a huge Britpop fan,but for me it all started with grunge, Nirvana,Stone Temple Pilots,Pearl Jam,Alice in Chains. Being really young and carefree – I was in my teens / twenties then, and I lived in Devon and Cornwall and surfed every day 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬! 💫 I once saw the Beast of Bodmin Moor on a late-night drive at the beach– it looked like a panther to me! 💫 I’ve stayed in a haunted house in Cornwall & had a very creepy experience. 💫 I’m really scared of Barlow, the blue headed vampire from ‘Salem’s Lot’ – when I friends used to bring along a cut out of his face to terrify me with. 💫 I’m secretly a horror wimp - I watched ‘Talk to Me’ a couple of weeks ago on Halloween whilst staying in a Travel Lodge on a book tour in London - it was so scary I had to turn it off and watch the end the next morning in daylight! 💫 My name isn’t really Gabriel Dylan – I stole the pseudonym from one of my children!!! It kind of reminded me of a house that you would read or see in an an Agatha Christie novel. This months #TalesPointHorrorBookClub we are reading The Body by Carol Ellis 🖤 Carol Ellis is an American author of young adult and children’s fiction. Her first novel, My Secret Admirer, was published in 1989 by Scholastic as part of their popular Point Thriller line. She went on to write over fifteen novels, including a few titles in the Zodiac Chillers series published by Random House in the mid-1990s, and two titles in The Blair Witch Files series for young adults, published by Bantam between 2000 and 2001. Under the Point Horror U.K. Banner we got 6 Carol Ellis titles. And, as far a I know, was the only author under this banner that had a variation cover with My Secret Admirer getting three different versions! It remains a mystery as to why! 🍁NOVEMBER🍁 My TBR for the remaining fall season 🥧 🍁November is my favorite of the ‘Ber months. The weather is cooler…cozy blankets…and crockpot recipes/homemade soups time to shine! 🍁It’s also my Birthday month! Any other Scorps in the house? 🦂 It’s ALSO Pike’s birthday month! 🍰 No surprise he’s a scorp. 😅 💁‍♂️ 🍁For the most part I’m a mood reader, and November always leads me to a gloomy, or gothic horror themed read, and this month is no exception. Over the summer, Hubs found most of the series at the second hand shop and I was so excited! This series is hard to find in “the wild.” I had them all in paperback, but they’re long gone. I haven’t read them since Jr. High, and they’ve been on my “re-read” list for quite some time. 🍁The 80s movie (possibly made for TV) all I remember is the makeup.
