[Long Post Alert] Spring races recap-ish and a repost. During winter training, I believed that my fitness was good enough to get a sub 3 and a sub 85 min in a marathon and a half, respectively. But My spring races, Boston Marathon and Brooklyn Half didn’t go as I wished. I can think of some reasons why they didn’t do well. I overestimated myself 🤯 Just kidding 🤣 I want to tell you about RACE WEEK PREPARATION!! I got sick and fever 103°F (94°C) 3 days before Boston Marathon 🤒🤮 I should have been more cautious in the gym/subway not to get sick I guess. In Brooklyn Half week, I cheated too much in my diet by making excuses for busyness in the evenings. I shouldn’t have been so lazy 🥺 It can be too long to describe my diet story so please ask me if you are interested 😅 Of course, weather conditions for those races were too warm for me but everyone ran in the same conditions. I just needed to prepare better and be stronger. But let me encourage myself before starting summer training for fall races. “Even though those races didn’t go well, remember you came so far from barely capable of running a mile, Maza!!” [Repost Part] I had been suffering from #mentalillness for years. Taking so many meds. Hospitalized a few times. I’m glad I survived through the tough moments. Proper medical support is essential but definitely running and exercising helped me a lot to conquer the mental illness. . I’m not going to just say past me was ugly or worst. It’s impossible to describe the sense of peace and bliss that comes from being here. Everyone who comes here feels it. I first came to this area in 2017. I was depressed, had anxiety, felt completely isolated, and was dealing with the trauma of multiple mass shootings at the schools I went to. All of this gave me full body chronic pain, which at that point had been going on for two years. Coming here inverted my mental state completely. For the first time in a while, I actually felt okay. Better than okay — I felt amazing. This was the most beautiful landscape I had ever seen, and something about it affected me deeply. Travel will never fix all your problems, and no single experience is going to cure your mental health issues. Coming here gave me hope for my life. It drove me to the spiritual path. I wanted to feel like this everywhere I went, regardless of what was happening in my life. I started meditating, journaling, sobriety, powerlifting, and a hundred other practices. This place gave me hope for could overcoming my depression, overcoming my body pain, and becoming the version of myself that I always wanted to be. I will always be a work in progress. My mental and physical health are a thousand times better than they used to be. But coming here still feels the same. This place quite literally saved my life and the gratitude I feel for it cannot be described. If anyone is going through and wants a change of scenery, feel free to DM me. [Long Post Alert] Year end #transformationtuesday #newyearresolution post. My New Year resolution for 2014 was going to the gym on a regular basis to overcome my mental illness. I joined a gym on December 31, 2013 and did some workouts on that day. The journey began. In the 10th year of the journey, I finally ran Boston Marathon @bostonmarathon and got a sub 3 marathon in Chicago @chimarathon Another decade of journey will begin. Mental health day for me today and this week... So today a year ago my life changed for the good. At that time I really didn't understand why it must happen to me and why I need to go through it but today I'm greatful. I really didn't think I will get through it. I lost in 3 weeks 10 kg and got admitted to Denmar hospital. What an amazing experience and what helped me so much. I met so many friends and my family and close friends where there for me all the way. But about today.... I feel okay. I feel stronger and so more motivated. I feel I can conquer the world. Exercise can be a powerful ally in the battle against depression. Physical activity not only benefits your body but also has a profound impact on your mental health and overall well-being. I’m not talking about high intensity cross fit madness either. I’m talking about prioritizing a walk around your block to get started. A jump in a pool, grab your kids scooter and ride with them down the street (my neighbours can vouch for me that I do this). Walk to your lawn, lie in the sun like a cat and stretch if that’s all you can muster for the day. Depression, is lighter when we move our bodies. It also helps shifts your focus away from negative thoughts and worries. [Long Post Alert] I actually posted following (Repost Part.1) in the beginning of this year and I finished @bostonmarathon in 3:01:29 in April…I’m definitely getting closer to a sub 3 marathon as I promised!! 💪 Now I’m starting to feel nervous 😨 (as always 🤣). In addition, life isn’t easy for me these days (more like months 😂)…probably for most of people. So let me encourage myself. [Repost Part.1] I started committing to get fit as a new year resolution of 2014 (left photo was taken in 2008). I started some machine training and stationary bike as starters, then incorporated rope jumping as the next step. Eventually went for running outdoor in summer of 2014. I ran my 3rd marathon (I did it twice when I was really young) at #tcsnycmarathon 2015 in 3:52:15, which was better result than 20-year younger myself’s. 2023 is 10th anniversary of my fit”-ish” life. . I am scared of officially saying this but I’ll try to run a sub 3 marathon in 2023. My result of 3:06:12 at #BrooklynMarathon and the estimated marathon time of 2:56:07 (I don’t think it’s possible for now though) calculated from the result of 1:24:21 at #StatenIslandHalf don’t make me think a sub 3 marathon is just a fantasy. I came across an amazing science paper recently! 🔬 They looked at a huge number of US army veterans, identified those who had ever taken vitamin D as a prescription, and matched them against controls. They found that the veterans who had taken vitamin D roughly HALVED their risk of suicide attempts and intentional self-harm! https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36724169 Another study concluded that vitamin D deficiency may be associated with increased risk or severity of depression. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28914205/ We can make vitamin D naturally, though sunlight exposure to our skin. But, in the autumn (fall) and winter, we may not get much daylight (or even in the spring and summer if we don't go outside!). This is so important that the UK government actually recommends we supplement our vitamin D levels in autumn and winter. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-d/ I recommend getting safe sunlight exposure.🌞 Not only does it help with vitamin D synthesis, but it also helps set your circadian clock with all the associated benefits. Yesterday, we looked at the language of "fighting" and "conquering" depression. I suggested it may be helpful to replace that combative language with "healing" depression.❤️ Another place where similar language is found is our own thoughts.🧠 How often does someone with depression tell themselves that they "should" or "must" go for a walk? How often do they say, "I need to" or "I have to" exercise? All the time, right? But how does it feel to hear that voice? Hectoring? Bullying? Self-critical? How much motivation does that drum up? Close to zero. That internal, self-critical voice is one of the causes of depression. Choosing to use a more caring voice is likely to be helpful. ❤️ One example would be to replace the bullying words with "I choose to" and see how that feels. Positive? Engaged? Perhaps a tiny bit motivated?👍 As I said yesterday, "fighting" and "battling" are *push* messages, as are "I should" and "I must." How about we replace them with *pull* messages such as "I choose to"? Give yourself a choice... say between a short walk and a short period of time in daylight, and "choose" one. Take a moment to feel how much better that feels than bullying yourself into doing one or the other. Let's contrast two phrases... "I'm battling depression [exhausting] and have to walk today [bullying]" "I'm healing from depression [caring] and choose to go for a walk today [empowering]"? Which of those ways of thinking will be most helpful to someone trying to heal from depression? The more I think about the language used around depression, the more I think it's wrong. We shouldn't "fight" depression or use similar words such as "battle", "conquer", "combat" or "beat." 💪 The implication is that we need to put in more spirit and effort. But that's not how depression works. In fact, fighting harder could easily make depression worse. And being told to "fight" only to "fail" could also make the depression worse! Why don't we talk about "healing" depression instead? Like a wound, we can heal from it. You don't "fight" or "conquer" a wound, do you? You care for it and heal it with love, compassion, and kindness.❤️ Fighting is a "push" message. People who end up depressed have already pushed themselves too hard and then punished themselves for not pushing harder! How about we shun "push" and embrace "pull"... so instead of forcing yourself to walk, offer yourself the choice... a short walk or 10 minutes in the sun, and see which you're "pulled" to. And so today I am on a solo journey flying out to tenerife to embark on a new journey, and a big leap in my career progression. 3 years ago today I was working in the NHS with no clear direction in life, working in a job I had lost my soul to, depressed, with very little aspiration in life. 3 years on from that and I have almost completed my Bsc Hons degree in Animal Biology & Wildlife Conservation, travelled and explored loads, ticked loads off of my bucket list, climbed 9 mountains, solo hiked, solo camped, solo travelled, obtained my advanced PADI license, become a marine mammal medic with British Divers Marine Life Rescue, worked/working in wildlife care, met some amazing people, and made some amazing new friends, and here I am now flying out to tenerife to meet the team that I am soon to be joining in June once I graduate 😁. I spent all of my childhood dreaming of working with marine life, becoming a marine biologist/conservationist, and now it is becoming reality! Dreams really do come true when you, push past your comfort zone, take a leap of faith, work hard for it and just believe. Put your mind to it and anything is possible! The past few years I have worked my ass off, putting in all my effort, making sacrifices, facing untold amount of physical and mental barriers, pushing past them, and remaining positive. As a result of this I am now finally going into an area of work I am passionate about and love, as well as being the most physically and mentally fit that I have been in my life! Nothing good in life comes easy, but its definitely worth it in the end. A kind of my New Year Resolution and partly repost. . [Long post alert] I started committing to get fit as a new year resolution of 2014 (left photo was taken in 2008). I started some machine training and stationary bike as starters, then incorporated rope jumping as the next step. Eventually went for running outdoor in summer of 2014. I ran my 3rd marathon (I did it twice when I was really young) at #tcsnycmarathon 2015 in 3:52:15, which was better result than 20-year younger myself’s. 2023 is 10th anniversary of my fit”-ish” life. . I am scared of officially saying this but I’ll try to run a sub 3 marathon in 2023. My result of 3:06:12 at #BrooklynMarathon and the estimated marathon time of 2:56:07 (I don’t think it’s possible for now though) calculated from the result of 1:24:21 at #StatenIslandHalf don’t make me think a sub 3 marathon is just a fantasy. You can call me a loser if I can’t make it happen by 12/31. But Maza! Don’t forget how far I’ve come. . . [Repost Part] I had been suffering from #mentalillness for years. Taking so many meds. Hospitalized a few times. I’m glad I survived through the tough moments. Proper medical support is essential but definitely running and exercising helped me a lot to conquer the mental illness. . The lower back situation isn’t good and decided to take another day off from running 😩 I’m always nervous before big races…actually any races 😂 The pain in the #tcsnycmarathon race week makes me even more nervous 🥲 But whatever happened, happened. Maza! Don’t forget. You’ve come so much far physically and mentally!! Maza 2008 barely ran 1 mile. Now compare those running records. Running 3-ish miles at 10:11/mi with gasping was my first run after 20-ish years in 2014 🫢 It’s been 8 years since then. I ran 10-mile race at 6:27/mi @cucb half marathon at 6:27/mi #statenislandhalf , and marathon at 7:06/mi @brooklynmarathon this year. Calm down. Even if my run at NYCM is pathetic in 5 days, I’ve been doing great this year. T-5 days till #tcsnycmarathon 🗽🍎 C’mon NYC!! 💪🔥 FYI, it’s going to be my 7th NYC and my marathon number 15 💪 . .
