Change is hard. Allowing change in our child is much harder. When we as individuals come to counselling, we are often prepared to do the work ourselves. However, it is not the same situation for our child. To them, it is just another appointment they are being brought to. Often, in the child’s eyes, it is another professional to whom their mom is explaining all the things they are doing wrong.  Imagine how hard that is for the child as a starting point in counselling?  The trajectory of change for a child in counselling in much different than an adult. Their ongoing struggles have the inertia of the Titanic going straight for that iceberg. No matter what, it’s going to hit it. The ongoing behaviours will continue to persist after the first few sessions. What can be even more upsetting, is that the behaviours may appear to even worsen.   From the parent perspective, counselling kids is a long game. The child will learn new skills but will not be skillful in enacting them. A surefire way to never see that new skill again is to admonish the child for trying. Our goal is to have the child practice that skill until they master it and feel confident. However, this is where the parent must LEAN INTO THE DISCOMFORT. It will not be fun at home while the child is figuring out how to change the trajectory of their old behaviours while learning and enacting new skills. It’s nearly impossible if their parent is micromanaging the effort. In fact, it will likely be futile.  Bringing your child to counselling is a huge milestone. Building connections with our kids is the most important tool we have as a parent. Asking open ended questions helps to develop their language, communication, critical thinking, and social skills. Open-ended conversations also foster creativity, self-esteem, and confidence. And perhaps most importantly, listening to your kids’ answers helps you get to know them and how their minds work even better, deepening your bond. Good Communication helps to strengthen the parent/child bond, and is the key to healthy emotional well being and development. Consistent active listening helps create a safe space for kids to express ideas, and emotions. Insomnia can result from increased anxiety and lack of sleep can increase anxiety causing a difficult loop to break. Meditation can have a positive impact on both anxiety and sleep. Research suggests that regular meditation practice can help reduce symptoms of anxiety by promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels. Additionally, meditation can improve sleep quality by calming the mind and body, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. Even if you don’t know how to meditate there are self guided apps that can help at very little or no cost. My approach begins by looking at the environment where the child is loved and nurtured: the family. By starting with an assessment of the family system and the inner dynamics, we can start to see how the family structure and routines can be adapted to be more responsive to the unique needs of your child.  Communication is key to any functioning family system. Therefore, understanding how your child prefers to express themselves is crucial in developing the trust that will enable them to share their inner world.  The ability to regulate the nervous system empowers the child to self-soothe, a big step towards autonomy and independence. The parent not only must model self-regulation but must actively co-regulate the child. Over time, the child will learn how to recognize their own triggers and be able to enact their own self-regulation strategies. A child’s self-esteem and self-worth begins with their primary attachment relationship. As they progress their childhood, they develop self-awareness in relation to their peers, adding another layer of complexity to self-esteem and self-worth.  Full autonomy is not the goal of youth counselling. However, independent thought, internal locus of control, and self-driven motivation is a direction to guide our children toward. As a kid I remember hearing things like “mid life crisis” and thought OMG is that what I have to look forward to, falling apart ?! When in reality, I think for many what this really is, is an awakening, a realization. The Great Unlearning. I see so many brave people out here questioning their upbringing, healing themselves and trying to be better parents for their kids. For many, it actually starts with Reparenting, giving yourself the things you didn’t get and needed as a young child. I know when I learned about reparenting about 5 years ago it changed my life, and my perspective. Raise your hand if you are doing this too !!
