NetGalley- 12 Jenna - on the hunt to 0 Last week I mentioned a #Netgalley zero hunt and got a few DMs about what I meant. Basically, it means 0 on my shelf in @netgalley How hard is it?! Pretty darn hard because the books I’ve bought or been given paperbacks to, I’ve put aside to see if I can do it😂 Doesn’t help that I have a guilt conscience about gifted books, regardless if they’re earcs or physicals, I feel like they give me dirty looks if I pick up one of the ones I bought. I need to push it aside more often because I’ve got a few that I’m dying to get into but won’t till I hit 0. And then of course, all bets are off as the end of summer, fall and winter new books are released because I’m then gonna go ‘click crazy’ So what do I have left…. 3 thrillers 1 lit fiction 2 fantasy 6 romcom Going into summer months, it always feels like the arcs become romance heavy. Which i love or hate 😂🙊 I either love it 5 stars or meh 🫤 them. And that my friends is Moody McMood talking. On that note, my @freepeople overalls makes me happy while I’m reading or running around with the kids. And there are so many colours. No I don’t get paid for this, but I will 💯 recommend them. Where Sleeping Girls Lie by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé • When I heard this book was coming out, I immediately put it on hold at the library. I LOVED Ace of Spades so I knew I’d love this one. Apart from being a great read, the main character, Sade, shares her experience with grief, something I strongly relate to these days. There were so many great quotes that I wanted to share but here are my top ones that not only I relate to, but also what I believe others should know, especially if they know someone who is grieving: • “But the thing about grief was that even one hundred good days were sometimes weighed down by an overwhelming guilt of forgetting. Sometimes she’d win a swim meet and for a moment forget why she was ever sad at all, and the guilt of not constantly being consumed by the weight of the loss she had experienced would be paralyzing. Other times, she’d feel the crushing weight of the past trying to drown her still.” • “Sade wasn’t sure she knew what normal was anymore. Her normal looked very different depending on the day. Sometimes her normal involved constant panic attacks throughout the day. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I actually really liked this book. There are two parts. The first is more thriller, fast paced, grabs your attention. The second, is more slow and contemporary. Two childhood best friends who did everything together are now very distant. Cassie is now married with a baby, lifestyle influencer and living her best life married to a man with all the money. Billie on the other hand, envious with being left out of Cassie’s new life, kidnaps Cassie’s baby on the night of Cassie’s birthday party. I really liked how we find out about the past with Cassie and Billie and how it brings them to the present. Some people may not enjoy this book. Different paced and genres between the beginning and ending of the book. But I was really invested and actually enjoyed it. I really didn’t know where it was going. I absolutely loved The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by @sachakrabooks (Shannon Chakraborty). Thanks to @thehonestgardenbookclub (The Honest Garden Book Club), I’m not sure I would have ever picked it up! Amina decides to come out of piracy retirement and help find a lost girl. The magical lands and creatures she encounters along the way are quite interesting. Amina is a strong, kick-ass woman and has great quick quips. The other night I attended an author event at @mystgalaxybooks (Mysterious Galaxy Books) where @ceejthemoment (CJ Leede) moderated a discussion with @lizkerin (Liz Kerin) regarding her new book that came out that day, First Light. I was stoked that this was an event focusing on women in horror and it was such a blast. Liz and CJ did such a fantastic job discussing the book, playing some trivia, and learning a bit about each other. We discussed road trips, vampires, aliens, writing processes, and more. Just finished “Sorrow and Bliss” by Meg Mason. I was not sure what to think about this book at first. However, as I read it, it began to grow on me and I ended up really liking it. I appreciate the way Mason portrays the reality of day-to-day life while living with long-term mental illness, especially when it has, for so long, been misdiagnosed. I also really loved Martha and Ingrid’s interactions and dry humor. It helped to diffuse the more serious tone of the book. But would have been nice to have been completely invested in this book. I thought the storyline was great. I loved Alex, she was a very likeable character. The quiet type of book that makes you think about your own life after you finish turning that last page. As a reader, you’re not clear where it’s going… a slower type of novel. But a gentle one too. About midlife paths. A reflection of sorts. My favourite @joellawriting book is “A Quiet Life”. It haunted me afterwards with the impact it had. I read a lot, but by the end of the year, there’s only normally 10-13 books that will stay locked in my head. And AQL was one of them in 2023. This was a different read. Not necessarily the same impact as AQL but still poignant especially for me, as I wonder where my next 44 yrs will go. Jack is the MC at the fork in his life. A chaotic, busy life before an opportunity that comes forth. It’s whether he’s willing to find out what he wants; where his heart is… and what really matters. The Measure by @nikkierlick (Nikki Erlick) • My mom highly recommended this book to me so she passed it on once she was finished. It took a while for me to get to it, as it typically does lol, but glad I did. Basically everyone in the world wakes up one morning to these boxes at their doorsteps. Inside is a string which they figure out if the length of your life. The story follows various people and families showing how people handle it differently, as well as society as a whole. Do we allow “short stringers” to run for office? Would you want to know the length of your string? That if your partner’s? These are just a few questions folks navigate with the strings. I really enjoyed it even though it wasn’t the most uplifting book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 This started off solid. It was great. I was intrigued. The plot was interesting, but, it fell flat. Another one 😩 It felt repetitive, and it dragged on a bit. I was expecting to be on the edge of my seat. But there really was no mouth dropping moment. Seemed like more of a drama than a thriller. Bummer! There is one thing that bothered me about when Jason returned home the night of the party. (Either I missed it or there was a bit of a hiccup) If you’ve read this, let me know. Julia and Sienna Larkin are sisters in law, connected by Julia‘s, husband and Sienna‘s brother, Jason. They’re also best friends and business partners. Their lives are quickly upended when Jason gets into a car accident that leaves him in a coma, and also a prime suspect in his boss’ murder investigation. Jason’s boss was found brutally murdered- with his lips sewn shut- days before.
