Happy 40th anniversary to Suburbia, the coming-of-age drama-thriller written and directed by Penelope Spheeris, produced by Roger Corman and centering on teenage runaways squatting in abandoned suburban tract houses and adopting the punk lifestyle. After her work on the work on the acclaimed documentary The Declined of Western Civilization documentary, Spheeris further displays her knowledge of the L.A. punk subculture with her first narrative feature that is investing and not for the faint of heart either (the movie begins with a baby getting mauled by a dog btw). It doesn't ask you to root for most of these characters as they do a lot of unsavory shit yet provide some rationale as well as a guide to how the punk lifestyle acts as a surrogate family that is eager to accept the disaffected and abandoned, kinda like the X-Men but with filth and grime covering it all. Suncoast was released on Hulu on Feb. 9, 2024. The film follows Doris, a teen who strikes an unlikely friendship with an activist who is outside of her brother's medical facility. This movie hit me in the feels. Doris is a very relatable main character, oftentimes feeling like an afterthought to her mom, while also struggling to make friends at school. She has spent her whole life taking care of her brother, never being able to truly discover herself. This is a nice coming-of-age story, as she deals with all of these different facets of her life. Nico Parker is in large part responsible for the film's success, playing the nervous, socially awkward teen very well. The scenes featuring Doris and Woody Harrelson's Paul were the best in the movie for me. Right away, their chemistry is off the charts, with some funny dark humor and a few laugh-out-loud moments. Her nervousness and his witty charm bounce off of each other well, which is a big reason why it works. Unfortunately, Paul is sidelined for a large chunk of the movie, making his role slightly confusing as a whole. Still, while he isn't in the film much, he has a strong presence in his limited screentime and makes a big impact on Doris. The final act of Suncoast shows growth in all three of the main characters, letting each of them express raw, genuine emotion. There is relief, but also the devastating grief that comes with loss. The flick navigated this very well, creating something that really connected with me. In the end, Suncoast is messy in moments, but the final product is very impactful. It deals with religious issues, but is never overbearingly focusing on them. Instead, the focus is on the characters and the relationships that they have with one another. 36 years ago today, Stand and Deliver was released in theaters on March 11, 1988. Really good film from the late 80s, based on the true story of a high school mathematics teacher, Jaime Escalante. I remember first seeing it at my grandmother’s house on tv a long time ago. Thought Edward James Olmos portraying the part of the real life teacher Jaime Escalante. There’s a young Lou Diamond Phillips in there playing one of the students, just fresh off of La Bamba and also Andy García is in here as well. 1 The story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb. To anyone who knows me, this being my favorite film of the year will be the shocker of the century. All jokes aside, as an uber fan of Christopher Nolan, I still wasn’t prepared for how he tackled Oppenheimer. I won’t belabor the point regarding the film’s technical mastery. At this point, technical mastery is a given with a Nolan film. What I find most captivating about the film is how soulful it feels. My shot of the year is a shot of Oppenheimer at the top of the tower before the Trinity Test, standing alone, looking at the bomb, which is crawling with innumerable wires and panels and the like, all while a quiet, mournful tune plays on the piano, before the bomb has even been detonated. It’s like a portrait of Frankenstein and his monster, like Prometheus looking upon a summation of the very best and worst humanity has to offer. The film does an unparalleled job of gradually brushing aside the initial need to build the bomb to beat the Nazis and spotlighting the truth, the fact that we needed to build the bomb because we could. I was also enormously impressed with how it’s just as scathing of Oppenheimer as it is sympathetic. This is a story about aimless curiosity, moral slippage, and unchecked power, so many of the titanic forces that drive history but are themselves driven by mere mortals.
