A boxful of meerkats! 💛 The girls really enjoyed the animal enrichment and behaviour workshop at @suffolkowls this morning. They made their own meerkat feeder toys out of recycling and animal safe paper maché, and then helped to fill this box with paper and balls (the keeper added meerkat snacks) - so fun watching them explore and play it in! Today was so exciting and I’m feeling so privileged to have been part of @ethanxappleby final uni project. Ethan is my eldest son and a 3rd year animation student. He had written a story which draws on our heritage as Shetlander’s and also created the animation to go with it. He asked if I would read his story in Shetland dialect and it was both a challenge and fun. As I sat in the recording booth with my youngest and my oldest working collaboratively to create this important piece of work my heart swelled with pride that my son isn’t too cool to bring him mom to school 😂 so to speak. This is a young man who was educated otherwise and has taken true responsibility for his learning journey. I can’t wait to see what he creates in his future projects. #homeeducation #homeed #uni #son #proud of

I feel like this is a home edder/home steaders rite of passage, as a pumpkin spiced latte is to your basic b.... Starbucks gal. We made sourdough starter and butter, all before 9am! The sourdough I have to feed daily for 5 days before we can use it. I sometimes forget to feed myself so I'm hoping leaving it by the kettle will remind me in the mornings... The butter Worth the effort? Maybe, it's probably the best butter I've had, super creamy, just needed a bit more salt. Did destroy the kitchen in the process (ask my husband, it's my main skill in life). Having lived off dairy free 'butter' for months it's so good to have real butter, and it was S's first time having real butter! Possibly R's too actually. S got bored of mixing and went off to play pretty quickly, but now I can be reassured that it's germ free butter and enjoy it more. She came back for the salt sprinkling and had a feel and taste of the butter. She said it's 'slimy and squishy, like playdough!' We now have some buttermilk so obviously tomorrow's breakfast is going to be pancakes 🥞 😍 The next part of homesteading is to convince my husband to get quails, right? #homeeducation #homeed #homesteading #butter #sourdough
What do we have in our ‘morning basket’? 📚 A ‘morning basket’ was something I came across before we started home educating and I loved the idea! For us it’s always been one of the best parts of the day, it draws us all together and has given me really special time with my girls - one day I’ll reckon they’ll remember all the breakfasts and reading! **We do NOT do this every day - sometimes we have to rush out of the door or we’re just too tired! My 5 year old doesn’t sit quietly at the table the whole time, sometimes she wanders off to play nearby! 😅 That’s ok too - she can still hear! - our morning devotional and bible verse cards - a poem a day book - a picture book (that my 5 year old will enjoy!) - our current read aloud - our Spanish workbook - miss 5’s phonics flash cards - I sometimes add in a history book/composer/something linking to our topic we’re doing Whilst I read the girls eat breakfast and then I add something they can do - sometimes magnetic tiles or STEM sets, sometimes word searches and maths sheets on a current theme (like space!) from twinkl, sometimes they go and find colouring and craft things. It varies to keep interest as they get older! 🥰 Sometimes this takes us 15 mins, sometimes 45…depends if everyone is in the mood and engaged! There are lots of people who do this far better than me but this has worked for us and it means we cover a lot of things together early in the morning - which is the time they’re most willing to sit! Do you have to do a ‘morning basket’ when you home educate? Of course not!!! I’ve kind of unintentionally submerged myself this week in drafting my new digital resource for parents📝 (this is going to focus on helping parents and carers to support their children in one particular area that can have a big impact on mental health and wellbeing, and increasingly so as children start to grow and gain increasing independence 💛). All intentions to put some time aside to think about all sorts of things I could share on here for #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek this week have gone by the wayside. Lots of other work things I normally do behind the scenes haven’t happened too 🙃 I’ve just got on such a roll with writing the new resource… 🌱🌈 In the back of my mind, I’ve been feeling a bit uneasy about not managing to do all the things…. Every single day I receive messages and comments from homeschooling mothers saying that they are feeling pulled towards a child-led, natural learning approach for their child, but they are met with resistance by their child’s father. In almost every one of these conversations, the father wants their child to be participating in a school-like rigorous curriculum (if they even support homeschooling at all). And at the heart, it’s the best of intentions. They want their child to be “successful.” They want them to have every opportunity to climb ladders, start businesses, ace exams, enroll in schools of their choice... to be the best they can be. Unfortunately, under the surface, all of this is rooted in insecurity and the trauma of a system designed to keep us pushing a boulder up the hill (usually for someone else). That fear of failure is intense for the men in our society. The patriarchal system doesn’t allow for heart-driven pursuits, enjoying our time, being creative, and following our passions. It allows for one thing, and one thing only - “head down, power through... I got through it, so must you.” Partners- if you find yourself in this situation with your partner, please approach it from a place of empathy. In most cases I work with, the father isn’t trying to discount the mother’s intuition or actively be unsupportive - they’re just trapped in that fear-driven decision-making place. Actively encouraging deschooling work is critical for working through these feelings. Helping them see the things their children ARE capable of instead of worrying about the things they aren’t is so important. At Bridge Academy, we offer support for our parents in this DeSchooling, healing work as much as we support our students. 💚 It’s a journey we are on together to create a better world for our children. I've been asked quite a few questions about notebooking over the last few weeks, so I thought I'd answer them all in one post. Notebooking involves compiling a personalized book filled with a variety of learning techniques; including written notes, drawings, diagrams, photographs, and anything you want. It is a flexible and adaptable way to document learning experiences, allowing children to document their understanding in a way that fits them best. Notebooking encourages creativity, critical thinking, and reflection, making it a great method for children to personalize their education and for them to connect with what they've learned at a deeper level. I have a post titled 'What is Notebooking' with some good short explanations for you to start with! I also have a highlight explaining how I find ideas and pages to use in our notebooks. Our approach is really quite simple. We draw, color, or include an activity in our books. I prefer my kids to draw because they retain more, but doing that every time we cover science would get monotonous so I add in some other methods. For now, what they do is directed by me, but as they get more practice, I'd like them to come up with their own ideas. We briefly go over a written narration, but I am not as strong in this area right now. Ideally, checking spelling and grammar would be done for older children and teens, along with their written narration. As we look ahead, I'm excited to witness my children's growing independence as they contribute their own ideas and reflections in their notebooks, making each one a reflection of their learning journey. What an amazing book! 📕 Last year when I started HomeEd with my son who hadn’t been interested in reading since leaving primary school, I knew that reading was one of the things that I wanted him to get back into for lots of reasons. I chose him this book to start off as his inspiration for choosing was low. Reluctantly he started to read this as he worked alongside a structured reading program via one of the HomeEd online resources, EdPlace. Read a chapter and assess it. Over and over until the book ended. Some days my son would read more than one chapter at a time because he enjoyed the story so much! And following this book, something amazing happened! My son started to read again, choosing his own stories and thoroughly enjoying them. 🪸CORAL REEF🪸 Over the last few days we have been looking at coral reefs.. What makes up a coral reef, Why they are important, What we are doing to destroy them, and also more importantly.. What we are now doing to try and save them. After looking at some of the different species that inhabit coral reefs, yesterday we took a trip to our local aquarium to see if we could spot any. Spotted this morning. All these things we find when we are outdoors that kids just wouldn’t see if they were sat in a classroom all day. Still get criticism for home ed from certain individuals who think my kids would be better off in school despite the fact they have no idea what we actually get up to as a family. If your child struggle with emotional control, you don't have to focus on their emotions. Focus on their brain. The same part of the brain, the cerebellum, that coordinates accurate emotional responses and control, also coordinates accurate movement, especially the hands and feet. In fact, as the cerebellum develops, we see children develop on a cycle of "head, hands, feet." Head includes their teeth, language, eye movements, cognitive ability and emotional control. Often we can help emotional accuracy by instead focusing on improving movement accuracy, as it helps the cerebellum to develop and therefore perform better. The same goes for you too. If you want better emotional control, focus on developing your own cerebellum. Starting soon, I'm going to take a select group of parents through the exact steps to improving their capacity, patience and unschooling using brain-based training. ~ More Maths.. that doesn’t feel like Maths ~ Ok so I feel a mini theme coming on. This activity was actually a follow on from reading the rainbow fish (cheeky bit of literacy, communication and language there!) Using this tray we took turns asking questions about shape names and colours, asking questions like “can you find me two triangles?” Reinforcing that knowledge we have built in other activities. It’s much more simple to include elements of the eyfs into our everyday play than it may seem.
