This new peice is, well, new for me. I created this sculptural piece for the show "Breaking Ground", where the theme is to try something new or different. @lafontseegalleries I normally use oils but for this piece I used black 4.0 ( the blackest black! @culturehustle )acrylic paint to create this super matte and deep black finish. At 27 years old I was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma, a rare and highly aggressive, fast growing cancer. I went through months of intensive chemotherapy. During this time I was more of a home-body. I couldnât go out much or see many people because I was severely immunocompromised, exhausted, just trying to survive and make it to the next day. I felt betrayed by my body. I felt like a stranger in my own home. I felt like my body wasnât mine anymore. What I thought was safe and meant to protect me, support me, help me, was actually trying to kill me. In this piece I wanted to convey the sense of these objects, representing the body and the home, to being voids. The title is a play on the term homebody. It takes on new meaning referring to my body as my home. Cancer stripped away my entire being, leaving a void behind. Mycosis fungoides and SĂ©zary syndrome are diseases in which lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) become malignant (cancerous) and affect the skin. Mycosis fungoides and SĂ©zary syndrome are types of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. A sign of mycosis fungoides is a red rash on the skin. In SĂ©zary syndrome, cancerous T-cells are found in the blood. Tests that examine the skin and blood are used to diagnose mycosis fungoides and SĂ©zary syndrome. Certain factors affect prognosis (chance of recovery) and treatment options. Mycosis fungoides and SĂ©zary syndrome are the two most common types of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma). Premycotic phase: A scaly, red rash in areas of the body that usually are not exposed to the sun. This rash does not cause symptoms and may last for months or years. It is hard to diagnose the rash as mycosis fungoides during this phase. Patch phase: Thin, reddened, eczema-like rash. Plaque phase: Small raised bumps (papules) or hardened lesions on the skin, which may be reddened. Tumor phase: Tumors form on the skin. These tumors may develop ulcers and the skin may get infected. There are different types of treatment for patients with mycosis fungoides and SĂ©zary syndrome cancer. Seven types of standard treatment are used: Photodynamic therapy Radiation therapy Chemotherapy Other drug therapy Immunotherapy Targeted therapy High-dose chemotherapy and radiation therapy with stem cell transplant New types of treatment are being tested in clinical trials. Just having a really bad hair day đ€Ș This was post one of the longest days (or what I thought was the longest day) of tests, I was taken for a procedure called pericardiocentesis (simply called fluid drainage procedure) for the pericardial effusion (simply called fluid around the heart). The procedure was a shortish one that lasted about 45 minutes or so where a cardiologist inserted some tubes (I think) to drain around 330mls of the fluid (that looked like thumbs up, I kept telling my dad I have my own factory of thumbs up now)... Post this procedure I stayed in the ICU for 3 days and was hospitalized for another 7. So what I thought was going to be a simple day of tests turned into 10 days of hospital stay. Oh - hi, 21 years! Happy Cancerversary, y'all. We actually made it to number 21. Quite the milestone if I do say so myself. Can't say that a whole lot has changed from 20 to 21. Except my hair. Couldn't begin to tell you what's going on there! This one is a touch more uplifting than last year. Your boy has been smiling a lot more over the last 12 months. But it turns out that I rather enjoy it. Madness, I know. I use these moments as a time to reflect and these will inevitably lead to all the pleasant emotions. That's right, I'm definitely getting old. Anyway, 21 years ago I was diagnosed with something that, for better or worse, would shape me into the person I am today. My first response in ALL situations has always been to pause and eat something! This photo is my answer to the question - so what were your symptoms before you were diagnosed with cancer??! I had only two symptoms - swollen neck and face (because the lymph nodes were swollen) and extreme breathlessness (because the pericardium was filled with fluid). And these symptoms moved from 1 to 100 in 3-4 days. Wow, just wow! I donât know where to begin. I never could have imagined this to have actually grew to what it was in a mere 3 days. You all are something else. WE RAISED $1,776!! I felt an immense sense of pride, honor, and fulfillment that something that means so much to me is receiving all of this support and actually has the potential to grow. I originally wanted to create something that honors my Dadâs hard work ethic, dedication, and passion to help other people; as well as his love for running. Cancer update đâš All good news happening this week! Iâm fortunate to be established with Moffitt and Florida Cancer Specialists for my cancer care. Moffitt recently had a board meeting to review my case and they agree itâs only in my neck and I need less chemo rounds than originally planned! PTL! đ đ I completed my second round of chemo yesterday! It went much smoother without a reaction this time (thank you steroids!) I will have two more chemo rounds with additional immunotherapy rounds to follow over the next few months. A repeat MRI will be done in a few weeks to make sure the chemo is working thus far and the cancer hasnât spread since my last imaging. Iâll be able to have better imaging via PET scan after baby is born. Side effects after the first round have been manageable (and praying it stays that way đ) Some fatigue and mouth sores but I really canât complain! My hair is coming out fast!! Iâll be sure to show off my new wig in no time đđ»ââïž Baby is doing wonderfully and growing on track! Original plan was for baby to come early around 34 weeks but with less chemo rounds itâs looking like weâre able to keep baby cooking longer! đâ€ïž This week I decided to take a step back from work due to being neutropenic. As we know a hospital is full of germs and unfortunately my body is unable to fight germs right now. Iâm taking it one day at a time! đȘ Please keep praying for baby and I as we continue this battle. Ek wou hul die âworryâ spaar, min wetend dat my Pa toe al reeds baie siek was met kolonkanker ..... Een van my âlearningsâ op die âjourneyâ was dat jy gesteld moet wees in veranderinge in jou lyf. Buiten die mangelonsteking het ek nie ander simptome gehad ... buiten bietjie gewigsverlies, maar ek het dit toegeskryf aan die feit dat ek meer aktief is. Another solid day in the gym. I was able to get three sessions out today. The first session of strength was Lower Body focusing of Range of Movement only using Body Weight, Cardio was the Assault Bike and session 3 was Shoulders, Biceps and Triceps. Difficile de redevenir soi-mĂȘme Ă 100% aprĂšs une Ă©preuve de la vie. Encore plus difficile de revenir, Ă ne serait-ce que 50% de ce que lâon fĂ»t, aprĂšs le chaos de la maladie. Si tant est soit peu que lâon redevienne ce que lâon a Ă©tĂ©. Pourtant je suis aimĂ©e, soutenue et entourĂ©e. Je plains les personnes seules. Je sens que je suis encore fragile Ă tous points de vue. Physiquement dâheure en heure je ne suis pas la mĂȘme face Ă une mĂȘme situation. Et on ne cesse de me dire que jâai bonne mine. Câest tellement Ă 10000 lieux de ce que je ressens. Psychologiquement je rĂ©siste beaucoup moins au stress et aux moments Ă partager avec les autres. MĂȘme ceux qui sont les plus proches. Et quâheureusement je suis quelquâun de positive et pas dĂ©primĂ©e. Le traitement principal est terminĂ©, mais jâai encore plusieurs piqĂ»res par semaines. Jâai la moelle osseuse paresseuse aprĂšs avoir Ă©tĂ© en mode reboot. RĂ©sultat les globules blancs ont Ă©tĂ© longtemps trop bas. A nouveau Ă la normale, mais quand mĂȘme des facteurs de croissance pour maintenir le niveau. Une piqĂ»re pour stimuler les globules rouges car anĂ©miĂ©e de plus en plus. Une piqĂ»re pour stimuler la fabrication de plaquettes qui peinent Ă remonter. Cette piqĂ»re me met vraiment dans de sales Ă©tats. Donc aujourdâhui je me sens presque plus mal que lorsque jâĂ©tais Ă lâhĂŽpital. Monter un escalier est un enfer. La moindre activitĂ© me demande un effort surhumain. Jâai des vertiges rĂ©guliĂšrement. Je suis faible et fatiguĂ©e en permanence. Le pire câest quand je sens que toutes mes cellules sont secouĂ©es comme dans un shaker Ă vinaigrette. Jâai lâimpression dâavoir Ă©tĂ© mise dans une machine Ă laver. Les douleurs jâarrive Ă mieux les apprĂ©hender par la mĂ©dication. Tout cela pour dire que malgrĂ© la rĂ©mission le chemin nâest pas terminĂ©. Donc on va continuer Ă faire face. Wednesday is Chest day for me and that means a very simple plan. 200 Reps through the chest. 50 reps are push ups as a warm up and then 150 reps of Bench Press so for me thatâs easy 25 sets at 80kg of 6 reps per set. This could not be more true! I had my follow-up with the oncologist yesterday and confirmed my 1E staging (seriously, thank God!), we seem to have caught this early, and that we will be moving forward with the following plan: Three rounds of chemo, followed by a second PET scan and if I have a complete response/negative PET scan then Iâll have a fourth and final round of chemo đ€đ»đ€đ». Truthfully, Iâve been able to get through this âwaitingâ/prep stage because of all of my amazing family and friends. Your positive thoughts and prayers are what have carried me through, kept me in a positive mindset and have allowed me to keep laughing and smiling â€ïž Next up: first round of chemo on Tuesday the 23rd. CLC MEMBER FEATURE: My name is Sophie and Iâm 26 years old from England! Throughout my life Iâve been fortunate enough to travel to some amazing places around the world. I also have passion for following my football team, Tottenham Hotspur and enjoy going to music concerts with friends! In 2020, the world changed for everyone and even more so myself. After feeling progressively unwell I was diagnosed with stage 4 non Hodgkinâs lymphoma cance and a hefty 14x11 cm tumour in my chest. The scary times begin with my first two rounds of treatment needing to be done in intensive care. Fast forward 9 months and I had finally completed 6 RCHOP chemo and 20 sessions of radiotherapy. After presenting with a NED scan I naively thought it was time to get my life back to normal. In the 3 years since Iâve had to grief a version of me that is no more and a life I so desperately planned for. I quickly learnt that it was only after Iâd finished treatment my mental health started to decline and process the trauma Iâd gone through. My body had been through so much and it was permanently damaged by the tumour and the chemo and radio. My heart struggles to cope in any situation other than rest and my lungs are continually filling with fluid due to the heart not pumping properly. Everyday I wake up dealing with extreme fatigue, pain and life limiting conditions. In 2023, I got to a place where although not easy I was finally getting answers from my teams and building good relationships with my consultants. I had personal highs as I got married to my husband who stuck with me through it all and enjoyed celebrating these milestones with friends and family. Unfortunately 6 weeks after our honeymoon, I got my second cancer diagnosis. This time Thyroid Cancer. I had my full thyroidectomy in February and thankfully it was successful and surrounding lymph nodes were removed. Due to it spreading I will need to have Radioactive Iodine Treatment to clear any remaining cancer cells. I have a long recovery ahead again, but being a part of communities like this make having a hard illness feel less alone and itâs nice to talk to people who can relate to what youâre going through!
