First of all this is my first book review in what feels like ages and there is no one single explanation to my being MIA. However, I am back! and here to stay! I lost count of how many times I wanted to delete this page becs of my sheer inability to keep it alive but I couldn’t muster the courage to click on delete button. Here’s my review of “Hotel Nantucket” which I would safely want to say is a hidden gem!!! I love feel good genres and my pursuit to find books that feel like a warm hug after a tiring day made me stumble upon this beauty. A story with a plot line as simple as— “A new hotel is opened at some island, will it get a 5 start review from some big shot hotel critique”—but the story line is revetting to say they least with multiple parallel plots that add depth to the story. If you know me from previous reviews, you would know that i love books with characters taht have a human touch and well this book quenched my thirst for characters with their imperfections that made them beings. The plot twist at the end was not something I had expected and the end was so wholesome that I had happy tears in my eyes. P.S. I have no clue as to how the algorithm works, that’s the price one has to pay for being away for so long! So Long, See You Tomorrow is a slim, ruminative novel where an old man looks back on a scandal and murder that rocked his small community as a boy and changed the life of his friend forever. It’s quiet and atmospheric, a true character study of both people and environment. Beyond this, there’s not much more I can say. It’s wonderful writing, but I won’t remember this book forever, nor do I think I’ll revisit it someday. A perfect story for its page count; I’m glad it wasn’t any longer, but I was happy to be in the story for 135 pages.

Joining the chorus of praise from my favorite Irish bookstagrammers, I found myself immersed in this book. 4/5 stars for its captivating writing, I was struck by the beauty of certain passages. I can’t deny that the narrator was unlikeable, yet I found myself strangely drawn to her, rooting for her amidst her flaws. Action takes a backseat in this book but the subtle glimpses into the narrator’s life provide profound insights into her decision to abandon her life and start over. This book feels exactly like the quote given above. It is a respite from the unnecessarily complicated web of human existence. It is a book lover's delight. I am not sure when in the simple prose and almost crude introduction of characters, I got engulfed into the lives of these people from the bookshop. However, every emotion felt was raw and honest. 🍂In Jimbocho, Tokyo, a girl finds herself suddenly surrounded with hostile books that seemed to her as alien as her own life was. Her depression leads her to dissociate from her own feelings. In the midst of juggling the pieces of her broken heart, she finds compassion amongst the lives found in secondhand books. Her uncle whom she had rejected as a nincompoop, turns out to be the light that helps her find herself. He makes her understand her worth. He makes her realise that the mere presence of a person is enough for their value to be found. The long forgotten aunt who had forsaken the world in order to reconcile her past with her present, comes back to the bookshop only to realise that she too had been a ghost in her own body. 🍂Without giving too much away, I can only say if you are an introverted book lover who likes to disappear in a corner with a book in hand, then you will enjoy this little read quite a lot. It has the sadness of betrayal and bereavement, the turmoil of routine and rigidity, the happiness of rekindling familial relationships that are often lost between hopes and expectations.✨ 🍂 Most importantly, it talks about that feeling of loneliness that grips all of us when the world lets us down. In classic Ward fashion, this story serves up a delightful cocktail of confusion & plot twists that’ll have you scratching your head. I read somewhere that reading Looking Glass Sound is like getting lost in a metaphysical maze of existential dread, and that’s hitting the nail on the head with a sledgehammer! I won’t spill all the beans on the plot because, trust me, you want to go in blind. But imagine a bunch of unreliable narrators who couldn’t find their way out of a paper bag, even with GPS. Looking Glass Sound takes you on a wild journey through the maze of coming-of-age madness, powerlessness, friendship fiascos, betrayal, and enough small-town secrets to fill a gossip column for a century. I'm still reading Iron Flame and if you regularly watch my stories, you will know that I have been somewhat disappointed by the book in contrast to Fourth Wing which I adored. I feel like the writing style is really juvenile and not my thing but this is made up by the funny, entertaining and suspenseful story in the first book. However, as of now I feel like the second book can't quite compete with it. (This little rant is free of any spoilers, by the way.) Violet seems to be somewhat changed, although she reminds me more of herself after @52%. The first 44% were just going round and round in circles with the characters having the same conversations and problems. The miscommunication trope and self-guilt-tripping played big roles here. The exposition could have been shorter and it appears to be a sort of retelling of the first year at Basgiath from the perspective of a second year cadet. Now I‘m way over the half and the story has finally picked up! It bears a resemblance to the first part and I'm curious to see how it will continue. Happy Halloween!🧡🥺 Things I have learnt since putting a carved pumpkin on my head - that nobody warned me about: A complied list. 1. A pumpkin is way heavier on your head than it appears to be in your arms. 2. Your head is actually bigger than you think. It may take two pumpkins before getting the size right. 3. If you want the pumpkin's face to look well, it will probably not match your facial features. Which means, you're basically blind and running against trees the whole time. 4. Apparently, pumpkins drizzle a lot of juice. Prepare for a continued trickle into your eyes and mouth. 5. If you were asking yourself: Yes, raw pumpkin does taste sweet. Against all odds, this is one of my favourite posts ever and I had a lot of fun choosing the perfect pumpkin, carving it and taking the photos! What is a popular book that everyone loves you haven't read yet?💐 I'm currently munching on Toffife trying to write a halfway-coherent review of Six Scorched Roses. Was it nice coming back to the Crowns of Nyaxia world? Yes. Did I like the characters? Yes. Do I like short stories? Not really. This story was cute in every way. I was supposed to read it between the first and the second instalment of the the series but I couldn‘t get my hands on the physical copy for the longest time. It was a complete coincidence that I came upon it in a Barnes&Noble in LA.😊 I'm always having a hard time reading short stories. They tease you with crumbs of what a characters story could be like and then leave you wanting for more. I really felt the chemistry between Vale and his beloved. However, it felt at times hurried and, of course, could not focus on much else. There was a seriousness to the story and its quotes that was beautiful but did not quite match the overall vibe. The real story behind the roses and the revelation at the end felt too fast-paced whereas the romance was drawn out - probably, to add some sense of depth. If you could have a superpower, what would you choose? I first came across this book on a thrifting site where I was looking for cheap special editions. I had never heard of it before but the story sounded intriguing enough and I decided to give it a try, although all the reviews were mostly mediocre.☺️ Alessa is her island's last hope in surviving the demons which savage her home every few year. Called by the goddess, she is fated to be the Finestra, the island's protector against the havoc-wrecking beasts. Together with her chosen Fonte, a partner with magical abilities whose powers she is able to magnify, she prepares to defeat these creatures in the Divorando. The only problem? So far, Alessa has killed each and every one of her three chosen Fontes. And while the Fontes refuse to work with her, believers are starting to think she is a fraud and plot her murder and the beasts looming closer, she employs Dante, the brutal street fighter from the Docks, as her bodyguard not knowing that there might be more to him than meets the eye. Let me tell you, when I read this book with @sofiasworldofbooks I loved every second of it! This is a fast paced plot interwoven with a unique storyline and loveable characters. I laughed about Dante's bad puns, cheered as Alessa finally stood up for herself and got a bit teary-eyed in the end. I cannot relate to all the aforementioned reviews but rate this book as a five-stars experience. Now I am not-so-patiently waiting for the second part because after THAT revelation at the end, I needed it yesterday!🫣
A book featuring feminism, motherhood, religion, piracy, lgbtq identities and is set in the early Arabic world - can that work? It can and it certainly does!🤭 Amina Al-Sirafi has long retired from being the most renowned pirate queen the Indian Ocean has ever seen. She has changed her ship and crew for a little cottage and raising her daughter. Until one day her family is blackmailed and Amina has to embark on one final quest in order to keep them safe. I needed some time to get into this but then I was hooked. It was especially interesting to see characters in their mid-forties trying to save the world while also managing family affairs and it demonstrates that you're never too old for adventures. Something I have never seen in any other books of the fantasy genre. It is basically a blueprint for what happens to our favourite characters once they have settled down and left their wild youth behind after we have read the final pages. The story itself is easy to follow and entertaining. While there were some things, I did not like as much, it was an overall pleasant read and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a unique storyline that also features the Arabic world and a refreshing take on mature characters.🌜

What's this week 💌 💌 Reading I'm currently juggling a plethora of books which annoys me somewhat but at the same time they are all pretty good so I count myself lucky. I am reading This Vicious Grace in a buddy read with @sofiasworldofbooks and I'm loving the story. There are a lot of mediocre reviews about it which I cannot really understand because I am obsessed.😍 In addition, I'm also reading Foxglove which cannot really hold my attention span for that long and Every Exquisite Thing that I am absolutely ecstatic for because I love me a good YA thriller based on Picture of the Dorian Gray. Perfect autumn read!🎃 💌 Watching I just finished Fleabag the evening before and what can I say, I have never laughed that much during a series. She's such a heart-warming and quirky character who hides behind cracking perverse and immature jokes the whole time but secretly has the biggest heart of them all! I'm really sad this is over already.🥹 Now I'm back to Scrubs, my favourite filler - and because Dr. Cox is my spirit animal.😇 💌 Listening to Not only is Fleabag an amazing show but it also features lots of songs that are on my personal playlist already. Sail, This Feeling, Mystify, Wish You Were Here… So I'm listening to them and my autumn playlist featuring Sweater Weather and Cherry Wine on repeat.😊 💌 Life I'm heading to California soon and can't wait to start this road trip around golden state!😍 Also, I have finally finished my personal statement which means that my uni applications have been sent off and I also applied to my dream job if uni somehow doesn't work out and because it is always good to have a plan B. How is your reading challenge going for you? Are you close to reaching your goal? Do you even set one?🥰 I'm always somewhat torn when it comes to reading goals. On the one hand, they encourage me to read more and it is really satisfying to check one of the books as 'read'. On the other hand, I sometimes feel like speeding through books just to catch up with that goal or feeling pressured by it and marking every page I have managed to read. Also, I dnf Masters of Death by Olivie Blake, which I will write more in-depth about soon. Do you count dnf-books as read? Because I have fought through 72% of that book and refuse to let that slide by. I probably would not count a book I didn't finish at 12% though. Shelfie Sunday! I recently rearranged my shelf after donating some of my childhood books to a local centre that takes care of the children of single parents. So now I have this beautiful black-sort-of-dark-academia-and-fantasy shelf which I love! It's a real eye catcher and I was thinking about sorting it by colour. However, tearing series apart is something I can't stand and I don't really fancy sorting my shelf by anything else, either. It's still pure anarchy and I like it. Finished: "Zorrie" by Laird Hunt Genre: Historical Fiction (20th Century) I spent a bit of time back home this month. What was meant to be a vacation ended up being more of a stay-in-cation after a family member tested positive for Covid the day after I arrived. So, I stayed in and read for most of my visit. One of my reads was "The Lives of the Wives". The other book I finished was "Zorrie". It was a short, quiet read, which was perfect after the drama in "The Lives of the Wives". "Zorrie" tells the story of one woman's life, from the beginning to the very end. Zorrie's tale starts in Indiana around the time of the Great Depression. It doesn't spend a lot of time on her childhood, but there's not much to tell. Her parents die, leaving her to be raised by her aunt. She drops out of school at 15 by demand of her aunt. When her aunt dies, Zorrie moves around, trying to find work and a way to support herself—briefly working as a radium girl—but her heart is in Indiana, and that's where she'll live nearly her entire life. The book covers Zorrie's love—and loss—of those around her, and how she finds meaning in life and carves out a place for herself in a small and rather mundane community. Zorrie has friends, and neighbors, and love, and a life—but like most of us, her life isn't extraordinary. She doesn't change the world. She doesn't have a very important job or a million people counting on her. She's just a regular person. And that's what this book really cares about: the beauty in the regular and ordinary life. I thought "Zorrie" was beautiful, though it was slow, and some may find it a bit dull and distant. It's not something that I would typically pick out, but I'm glad that I gave it a chance. She did it, again! Rebecca Ross, or as I like to call her, my favourite author ever, managed to write another awesome piece of literature. Honestly, Ross is everything I’d aspire to be as a writer. She creates atmospheric worlds with a touch of magic, likable characters and comes up with original ideas!🩷 This book features Iris’ story. Iris is an eighteen-years-old girl who starts working at a local newspaper aspiring to become a columnist after she dropped out of school to step up for her turned-alcoholic mother when her brother enlisted as a soldier to fight in the war of gods. Problem is that Iris is not yet a columnist but rather has to compete for that spot with her rival Roman who is everything she is not. Wealthy, with a good education and no responsibilities - or so it seems. However, after a tragic turn of events Iris uproots her whole life and settles down at the front line to write about the war of gods. What really made this a perfect read was the fact that it discusses writing, journalism and being a war correspondent. A combination that is entirely new to me in the fantasy genre and one I enjoyed immensely. Ross' world unfolds page by page and I love that her worlds are so close to ours which makes it easy to imagine that story is really taking place somewhere among us. In this case, the story seemingly takes place in the 1940s. In addition, the author has an intricate way of building up character arcs and giving her characters flaws that make them appear even more human. As if they could jump out of the pages at any given moment, the ink in their veins turning into blood, and go for a coffee with you.✨ I would recommend this book to every reader who loves writing, enemies to lovers, atmospheric worldbuilding and unique characters. Book Review: The Sun and The Void by Gabriela Romero-Lacruz ☀️ In a lush world inspired by South American history and folklore, an epic fantasy unfurls - a tale of colonialism, ancient magic, and two young women's quest for belonging. Reina is desperate, saved by her unknown sorceress grandmother, but at a cost—obeying a whispering ancient god. Eva Kesare is unwanted, concealing her mixed heritage and a dangerous magic that defies societal norms. Their paths converge in a tale of survival, temptation, and transformation. To coin a well-used and cliched phrase, the Sun and the Void really did hook me in from the very first page. There was very real danger and peril and I instantly wanted to keep on reading. The narrative is woven through the perspectives of two distinct voices: Reina, whose life hangs in constant jeopardy from the very outset, and Eva, whose family's shame shadows her every step. Reina's narrative quickly became a favorite, drawing me in with her likable character and captivating story. On the other hand, Eva's perspective initially posed a challenge to connect with, yet over time, I gradually grew fond of her as her story unfolded. The story started strong in the first chapter, but it kind of slowed down later on. I felt like I was waiting for things to happen for a while, and I think trimming it down a bit would've made it more enjoyable for me, but overall a good read. ‘A Good House’ by Bonnie Burnard 📚 “Walking out to Mary’s car she’d thought, It’s true what they say about timing. So much in this life depends on timing.” One more Giller Prize winner checked off the list! ‘A Good House’ received the prize in 1999. Starting in 1949 and slowly unraveling to 1997, this story follows the Chambers family through life in rural Ontario. Like every other family, they face challenges including infidelities, death, divorce, & disability interspersed with marriages, births, & personal triumphs. This story isn’t heavily plot-driven - not much really happens aside from the living of life itself. The writing is beautiful, the pace is slow, & the characters (along with the challenges they face) are relatable. It was the perfect book for me to read at this point in my life as I start my own family. That being said, it’s details likely won’t stick with me for a long time. It's impossible to separate the author from the narrator in these interconnected short stories about a British woman who lives alone on the west coast of Ireland. Her voice is so natural that you feel like you're there in the room whether she's pottering around the house thinking about furniture, looking out the bathroom window at the workers repairing her thatched roof, or singing the praises of tomato purée.
