Australia’s relative remoteness from the U.S. and Europe has its pros and cons. As a travel-obsessed American who prides herself on not falling for cheesy tropes and stereotypes, I plead guilty as charged to picturing a bunch of merry kangaroos hopping around sun-baked red and dusty vineyards in Australia. Maybe there’s a rugged dude there wrestling a crocodile? Not sure mate, but there must be pairings involving vegemite in the tasting room? This week my “education” about Australia via Hollywood is getting a revise. I’m exploring Victoria, technically the second-smallest state in Australia, but in reality this southeastern region is still vast and quite diverse. Victoria encompasses round 90,000 square miles, with 54,000 acres under vine in 800+ small vignerons dotted across 21 distinct regions, but concentrations along the coastline, and many within easy 45-minute-ish driving distance from the country’s culinary capital, Melbourne. One thing that does hold true to the stereotype though is the great, adventurous spirit of the people and place. Here’s a taste: Kim Chalmers of Chalmers Wines is continuing her family’s legacy of creating not just world-class wines in Murray Darling, but also importing and propagating grapevine clones and varieties for their fellow winemakers across Australia. Chalmers Nurseries has introduced more than 70 clones and varieties, many of them Italian in origin. They are, without a doubt, one of the leading forces in the elevation and diversification of Australian wine in the modern era. Matt Fowles, vigneron, hunter and farmer at Fowles Wines in the Strathbogie Ranges not only produces some of the country’s best cool climate wines, but is also a pioneer in sustainability. Matt is currently in the midst of a radical, pioneering micro-bats experiment with scientists at the University of New England. Together, they are figuring out how to encourage these hungry nocturnal creatures to venture further into the vineyard and do what they do best—eat their weight in vine-munching moths, thereby eliminating the need for chemical intervention. The wine🍷:A Pinot from the bargain price, this wine has plenty of black cherries jumping out. After decanting for a short stint, there were hints of other aromas. . The meal 🍽️:A traditional European recipe where the pan is prepared with garlic🧄, onion🧅, and cubes of prosciutto🥩, before braising the rabbit in Dijon mustard🍯 and cream🥛. Served with red cabbage and carrots🥕, and a crunchy Larent rye Vienna loaf.🥖 . The dance 💃🏻🕺🏼: The rabbit was a mild flavour, and benefitted from the rich sauce. The prosciutto imparted quite a savoury, salty umami which resulted in the wine tasting riper. 🍷NEW RELEASE 🍷 Our 2023 Singlefile Single Vineyard Porongurup Pinot Noir is a seductive, savoury styled pinot with lifted aromas of sour cherries and spices. These characters follow through on the palate with a moreish, medium weight and textured mouth feel with forest floor characters, soft, silky tannins and a long finish. This wine is produced from the Misery Hill vineyard on the northeast slopes of the Porongurup range. At 320m above sea level, it is one of the most elevated vineyard sites in Western Australia. The established vineyard, planted in 1996, benefits from a cool micro-climate without too much rain pressure which is ideal for the delicate pinot noir grape variety. Available now to our Collector and Appreciator Wine Club members.
TOUT PRES BY FARR 2021 🇦🇺🍷 With 7300 vines per hectare, Tout Pres is a densely planted vineyard on the estate—hence its name, which translates as “very cozy”. Classic Farr nose, a beautiful earth-driven bouquet of integrated spicy fruit, earth, gamey and oak characters. Tout Pres’s classic forest floor character on the palate is complemented by very fine tannins, with a super long and fine palate. In my opinion one of the best Australian Pinot around, no doubt. 2019 Ten Minutes by Tractor Up the Hill Pinot Noir Australia is certainly well known for making great Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, but have you had any Pinot Noir from the Mornington Peninsula? In the states, it’s extremely hard to come across these wines. Simply put, they don’t really make it here. So when I saw the chance to have one of Australia’s best Pinot Noir producers, I gleefully took that opportunity! 10 Minutes by Tractor is a producer that I’ve come across before and was insanely excited to try again. They’ve been around since 1997 crafting some absolutely lovely Pinots and utilizing as hands off of an approach as they can. It needs a bit to open up, but as it does, it’s quite elegant and demure with raspberry, sourdough, cherries, violets, red fruits, a touch of candied red fruits that show off the new world side whilst holding back just a slight bit. The Medium/full bodied feel is well balanced and silky with crisp, medium+ acidity and refined, medium tannins. I come across this on very rare occasions and was extremely pleased to see it on a list in Bath. This is really lovely and while young, it shows well right now with a more red and candied red fruited style. This was a real treat! I would love to come across more Pinots from the Mornington if this is what they’re bringing. Thank you so much @corkagebath for having this on your list! PINOT NOIR POST I found a Margaret River Pinot Noir that I really enjoyed at the cellar door and then enjoyed it even more when cooking at home, too. This delicious wine was the perfect pairing with lamb lion chops and 2 beetroot and feta salad. I am the crazy Chardonnay lady, but I feel the same way about Pinot Noir. Pinot made in my personal taste is a lot harder to find and can break the bank, as all you Pinot lovers know. This 2021 Skigh Wines Longley Margaret River Pinot Noir was named after Skigh (winemaker) fathers middle name. I would love to meet this man if he is as lovely as this wine. 🍷Harvested early to maintain acidity and varietal expression. 100% Margaret River fruit- Pinot Noir is usually grown and harvested from The Great Southern grape growing region where Pinot Noir is more suited for climate. 🍷Fruit was then cold soaked prior to a full natural ferment, 15 % whole bunch ferment. 🍷After alcoholic fermentation and malo, the fruit was then basket pressed into 20% new french barriques and 80% 2nd fill barriques. 🍷the wine was then matured in barriques for 24 months before bottling with minimal intervention. 🍷1300 bottes produced overall and now sold out at the cellar door and online but the available to purchase at Settlers Tavern and The River Bottle store in Margaret River. I don't eat Chicken Dinners, but I'm certainly a good grinner! It was a thrill to have a big part of my 2022/2023 recognised at the @winecomaust awards last month. The @pinotcelebrationaustralia won Best Wine Themed Event at the WCA Awards for 2023. Totem Marketing received a brief from @mpwine to generate a comprehensive program of media engagement, copywriting, advertising, social & digital media. Given the limited resources available at @mpwine, it soon evolved into building a website from scratch, scripting and producing event videos, filmed by @chrisfranklynvideo & @piercarthew, working with @paolismithcreative to create the brand look & feel, working with numerous stakeholders such as @wineaustralia & providing event support to @mpwine as required including over the two-day event on the Mornington Peninsula. The event was not only a celebration of pinot noir in Australia, it also took Australian pinot noir to the world with events in Denmark, the UK, Singapore and the USA. He picked up a 2021 Ten Minutes by Tractor Down The Hill Estate Pinot Noir for about $52. This Friday Arvo drink reminded him of why he bought it! Delicious pale ruby red and orange in colour. An intoxicating aroma filled with herbs. The taste is soft, subtle, yet the flavour is strong and structured. Herbs of sage and rosemary, join red fruits, vanilla, and oak and a beautifully balanced wine with a lasting finish. We enjoyed this gem right next to the swimming pool of the American Club of Singapore. This is the first time tasting the Premium Pinot Noir of Bass Phillip, as I have only tasted the Estate Pinot Noir. It really tastes like a grand cru Bourgogne Pinot Noir from great producers. It tastes just like Vosne-Romanee!!!! Phillip Jones commenced his wine career in 1979 at the age of 32, having spent an early career in telecommunications and IT research. He was captured by the great wines of Burgundy (eg. Charles Rousseau and Henri Jayer) in the early eighties, which set him on the path of finding an appropriate region and appropriately organic techniques to develop pinot noir wines with depth and fine texture. Since then, his Bass Phillip pinots have often achieved the highest ratings in the land, including the nomination of his 2010 Reserve pinot noir as the Australian Wine of the Year. The Bass Phillip vineyards have grown to 14 hectares over the past 25 years, much like a small Burgundy Domaine. The vineyards have been organic since 1993 and biodynamic since 2002. As of April 2020, Bass Phillip wines has welcomed the entry of – Jean-Marie Fourrier (of Domaine Fourrier) and associates. In this new phase of growth moving forward, Jean-Marie Fourrier will begin to take an active and primary role in the management of the vineyards and the wine production process as Chief Winemaker of Bass Phillip wines. Jean-Marie and Phillip share a common approach to wine production, inspired by the great Henri Jayer from Vosne Romanee.
