So here are four tips for you dads! 1) Prepare for Breastfeeding with Classes - prenatal breast-feeding classes are not just for moms, these classes are for you too! In these classes, you will learn benefits of breast-feeding, how breast-feeding works how to maintain supply and how you can help support you’re breast-feeding partner. 2) feeding time is family time- help mom with Positioning, with latching, with milk expression, do a little skin to skin, and so much more! Feeding is a time for you and your partner to be together with your baby… your family! 3) share responsibilities- help around the house- during this postpartum time. Your partner will be working and making milk for your baby. Your partners job is the baby and your job is your partner. Help in anyway around the house, preparing pump parts, groceries, any little thing will help in a long way! 4) skin-to skin- I can’t say enough about skin to skin. "Daddy's role is to provide formula and diapers and if my child's father can't feed his baby then he will feel left out"... Oh my... this is a very popular comment in my experience and it's so far from the truth. Partners (daddies) can change baby, burp baby, bathe baby, rock baby to sleep. I honestly wish that you would see your worth outside of feeding your baby. I get it, feeding baby is such a precious time to establish a bond, but understand that there will be sooo much more time for that. Please allow mommy to breastfeed baby directly from the breast for at least one month (all things being well). Then the conversation can be had where she can express the milk and you feed from a device other than the breast... You play such an important role in making mommy feel good about herself during this time. Encourage her and make her know she's doing a good job, rather than make her feel as if she's doing something wrong... (plus she's saving a whole lot of money not buying formula... cuz that ish costs a pretty penny) Now friends, grandparents, the community... that's for a whole other post. As new parents, we were pretty lost for the first few days. We struggled with basic tasks like when to feed the baby, how much to feed, how to sterilize the right way, and so on. Thanks to @philipsavent_india which came to our help. Their feeding equipment made the baby feeding task easy, while their tips for new dads were a big help for my husband. The question was “what’s one thing your partner did that made you feel supported?” Here are the answers! “Changed diapers” “Cooked” “Changed pretty much all the diapers since I nursed. Made sure I had dinner brought to me.” “Hands on help with breastfeeding-even did breast compressions for me whilst I fed/pumped.” “Checked in with me multiple times a week to see how I was feeling.” “Cooked, more cleaning, basically let me rest and take it easy.” “Lay in the nursery the first few weeks in the middle of the night while I nursed.” “He stayed awake at night to watch us sleep and keep us safe as baby wouldn’t sleep anywhere but on me.” “Brought me all the snacks while breastfeeding 🤣🤣🤣 literally anything I asked for.” I’ll be using the rest of the feedback later this week as we cover different topics about fatherhood and relationships after baby. If you’re reading along, you might notice that all these things dads can do aren’t super difficult... I think that men often feel they need to do something BIG for us to notice but most of these responses involve dad changing diapers, making sure mom is fed, checking in with our emotions, hands on help with breastfeeding (sit in on the lactation consult and ask your LC to give you pointers), and being present during those sleepless nights. My husband would sit up and talk to me in the middle of the night while my daughter was nursing and nothing made me feel more connected with him than that. He’d also come home after a 12hr shift and immediately jump in, wearing Cleo in the baby carrier and catching up on dishes, cooking for me, and sending me off to shower or just have a little alone time and I’d come back to see them laying skin to skin in his recliner 🥰 that’s right @madebymonkeys84 Feel free to like, share, and save this post!
