I met Nonna 6 years ago and since then I’ve spent every Sunday morning that I’m in Lisbon with her. ✨ 102 ✨ Yesterday we celebrated Opa’s 102nd birthday. In the morning he was visited by the mayor and old work colleagues (the younger few who are still alive) and in the afternoon we celebrated as a family (a champagne toast, traditional white asparagus & ham for lunch, more champagne, rhubarb cake & coffee). Every week, without fail, he walks the round trip kilometer to the nearby Lotto shop and back - to do his “Tippen.” He’s been betting on the same set of numbers weekly for over 60 years - and while it only costs a couple euros, it gives him something to look forward to every time those numbers are announced. He still does his exercises & reads the newspaper every morning... and does his grocery shopping on the days he’s feeling well enough. And while he refused to use a walker until he was 100, because it “made him look too old” he’s agreed to use one when he grocery shops now. Cheers to Opa and these next few years of an enriching life 🥂

A few months ago, I was down to 138lbs. I felt okay but I’m not sure stick man can last into his 100’s if he withers away. Working out and lifting weights is actually kinda easy. Honoured to be quoted in the Globe and Mail this week in Alex Hutchinson’s ‘Jockology’ column. 🙏 The article (link in bio) highlights the specific benefits of personal training for various age groups and ability levels. Being a great personal trainer means seeing each person with fresh eyes. In 20 years of training older adults (and others with special considerations), I’ve never given the same program twice. Everyone progresses differently, and a good trainer has to be cognizant of this at each step. Beginners sometimes need to be held back from ‘overdoing’ it, and experienced exercisers may need to change established ways to continue getting results. Seniors can benefit from a hands-on approach at first to build a foundation of alignment, balance and basic strength upon which we further build. Definitely keeps it interesting. 💪🏽 We all have blind spots, so don’t be shy to find out how you can optimize your routine. 🙌 Finding the right trainer for you is a game changer.

Another 3 day fruit fast is in the books. I was, at first, really sceptical about the healing power of fruit, but it just keeps making me look and feel better and better. I am hooked! I will continue to push the quality and quantity of my fruit consumption. Nothing changes for me from a physicality perspective when I do these fasts. I continue with my workouts as I normally would. I don’t concern myself with the protein reduction. After all, fruit does have protein. I just think the macro percentage ratios in fruit are more in line with the bodies requirements for longevity. Just remember though that I am no longer interested in body building, but I am very interested in health building. I appreciate the importance of reflecting, rethinking and refining strategy to get best results, and strive to think critically and remain open-minded. For me, 2022 featured a big experiment to swap out my typical morning fasting period for a big bowl of fruit and a huge protein Superfuel smoothie. This is consumed at the completion of my 40-minute morning exercise routine, or after morning exercise plus formal workout. Before morning exercise, I’ll grab a couple bites of dried fruit. The idea with the increased (nutritious) carbs, increased calories, and decreased fasting is to focus my energies and stress hormone resources on performance, recovery, more performance, more recovery - and support that focus by striving for maximum cellular energy status at all times.  I still validate the incredible health benefits of fasting and keto that I've written about and discussed extensively for years, but it's important to think of these strategies as tools to improve your eating choices, self-discipline, gut function, and so forth. Fasting, keto, low-carb, time-restricted feeding, etc. are most beneficial if you don’t move your body much and eat too much food, especially processed foods. If fasting keeps you away from a crappy All-American breakfast of processed carbs (toast with sugary jam, sugary cereal, sugary Starbucks, baked goods with refined grains and seed oils, etc. - big win! But these are indirect benefits, not inherent benefits. I challenge anyone to contend that my huge bowl of morning fruit and high-protein smoothie is not beneficial for my active, athletic lifestyle. So I have been posting in my stories this week the progress of my 3 day fruit fast. This is a fast where I eat nothing but fruit for 3 days. I chose grapes, pomelos and cantaloupe as those are some of my favorites. Grapes, berries and melons are best. So before I started I weighed 176.2 lbs. After day 1, I weighed 171.6 lbs. After day 2, I weighed 167.6. After day 3, I weighed 165.8. That is over 10 lbs of weight lose in 3 days. That is a big drop and is mostly water weight due the the elimination of sodium. While the weight lose is nice the many other health benefits are the true reason why I do it: 🥭 Digestive rest 🍈 Mental clarity and focus 🍇 Lymphatic system cleansing 🫐 Cellular regeneration 🍑 Cellular hydration 🍉 Intestinal cleansing 🍓 Skin cleansing This is a beautiful magical experience I would recommend to anyone. I’m four months into my “experiment” to consume more carbs, more total calories, and cease with fasting in favor of eating a huge bowl of fruit and a huge protein smoothie every morning. Listen to my two interviews with @jfwellness and my four podcast episodes on ‘energy balance reflections.’ My extra calories (similar training and lifestyle patterns) have resulted in improved body composition, improved fitness, better workoout recovery, and resolution of nagging injuries. This week, I had the great privilege of personal training with 101-year-old Tom of Lake Tahoe. Yes people, it’s possible to be strong, healthy, vibrant, happy, alert, and energetic into triple digits. This guy CRUSHED two workouts featuring balance drills, bodyweight exercises, flexibility/mobility drills, and resistance cords - all while talking non-stop with precise memories and references about the old days of golf (he once tied Ben Hogan and beat Sam Snead at the Phoenix Open in the 40s). He claims to be lucky, but let’s be honest about his lifelong devotion to health. He has a history of long distance running and trains two days per week in the gym. He says he’s confident he’ll reach 102, but not sure about 103. On that note he says, “I don’t want to end up in a wheelchair” - what a line from a centenarian! Had a great day in London today. My highlight was lunch with Leslie Kenny. Founder of Oxford Healthspan. Leslie is a Southern Californian entrepreneur and Berkeley and Harvard Business School graduate, whose life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis in her 30s. When her doctors told her lupus had a life expectancy of 5 years and that rheumatoid arthritis could only be managed, not cured, she set out to optimize her health as best she could using safe, natural solutions. And look at her now! She is heavily invested and knowledgeable about longevity. Just had a great conversation with Primal Health Coach Ryan Baxter @rjbhealthcoaching to further discuss how diet can support peak performance, and the reflections on my shows with @jfwellness Jay Feldman of Energy Balance podcast. I’ve been on a seven-week experiment to eat a big bowl of fruit and a whey protein superfuel smoothie every morning, and make a concerted effort to eat more calories overall. Ryan did a highly quantified experiment lasting one year where he ate 700 extra nutritious calories per day and didn’t add any body fat. Very interesting commentary prompting me to rethink some of the foundational elements of ancestral health, particularly whether ambitious fasting combined with an ambitious exercise program combined with being in the 55+ age division might be stacking too many stressors. Trying for 5’2” (1.57m) and will get it soon. #mastershighjumper Regarding my recent post on testosterone, I’m pleased to see my T numbers in the high zone, but don’t get me wrong - I am not gloating nor satisfied. I continue to be frustrated by recurring soreness, minor injuries, and delayed recovery from high intensity sprinting, high jumping and weight lifting workouts. As I share in my recent Energy Balance interviews and commentary, I believe that combining my extreme eating patterns (fasting/keto/low-carb), with high intensity workouts, and being in the 55+ age group has been too much stacking of different stressors. I seem to feel and perform pretty well in general, but as @carnivoremd2.0 Dr. Paul Saladino says, let’s always try to level up. I’d love to go from level 7 to level 9, while not even being sure I’m as high as level 7! Hence, I’ll continue to experiment, refine, remain open-minded and think critically. Thanks for being on this journey with me! Speaking of testosterone levels, the “standardized reference range” for testosterone in males under age 40 was recently downgraded to 264-916 (from the previous range of 348-1197.) This is widely believed to be a concession to rising rates of obesity globally (which tanks T levels), and modern stressors like environmental estrogens, poor diet, sleep, and exercise. If you are under 40 with T of 265 you are “normal,” but it might also be considered pathetic. I recently cringed listening to a hormone replacement therapy expert contend that you should start on a hormone protocol, “as soon as you start feeling like shit, because if you’re too tired to correct to change diet, exercise, lifestyle practices, you won’t succeed.” Fair point, but I think we can all focus on taking baby steps toward health and natural hormone optimization. I like how @LiverKing says to start hitting the nose-to-tail superfoods and supplements to re-energize your depleted cells and help you get up and out the door to a more active lifestyle. If you're a fan of our page, you may have recently seen that we celebrated Ms. Lois' 100th birthday this week, and with 100 birthdays under her belt, you can bet that Ms. Lois is full of great stories. We're particularly fond of hearing about her days working at the Maybelle Dress Manufacturing Co. in Gulfport where she served as a seamstress and supervisor for over 20 years. Legend has it that Ms. Lois was so good at her seamstress position that some of the other ladies in the factory could barely keep up with her. But to her, she just wanted to stay busy so she would sew as much as she possibly could each day. And that work ethic has stuck with her to this very day. She continues sewing various items for others in the Seashore community like masks, dinner bibs, and even crocheted hats. What may be even more impressive is that she's never used a pattern for any of her sewing. Talk about a Project Runway Designer OG! Recent meals. Some points for creativity but perhaps not variety…I’m going for maximum nutrient density as top priority, and also maximum enjoyment. These seem to be my go-to meals, of course supplemented by tons of the highest quality dark chocolate, and my morning Superfuel whey protein smoothie (New product coming soon for your enjoyment!) pictured in the slideshow are things like: pastured humane certified eggs, grassfed steak and ground beef, grassfed liver and liverwurst, organic chicken hearts, sauerkraut/kimchi, Okinawa all-purple sweet potato, fried corn tortillas.

This fluffy girl just got done with a 4 mile training run. The body works so much harder with excess body fat outside and in. I can blame Covid. I can blame my gym shutting down. I can blame the amount of work hours I put into my job. But if you know me, I’m not even going to go there, because everything that takes place in my life is owned by me.
