About the art of cooking, children and grandparents, and a collaboration. Please read below. Learning to cook like their grandparents can be incredibly beneficial for young children in many ways! It preserves family and cultural traditions while developing important life skills, like meal planning and food preparation. It encourages healthy eating habits and nutrition knowledge, fosters independence, promotes sensory exploration and fine motor skills, encourages creativity and experimentation. It teaches patience and responsibility helping the children self-confidence, and creates lifelong memories and an intergenerational bond. Plus it helps with writing (write the list of the ingredients we need to buy/prepare), reading (can you check the recipe for me?) and their math skills through measuring and fractions. All four want to cook independently. The girls made tomato sauce for pasta from scratch weighing all ingredients. They are first graders and could do simple three cypher addiction/subtractions (e.g. we have 185g of tomatoes, how many more grams do we need to reach 200g?). The boy is in kindergarten and when asked what he wanted to cook he said "boiled spinach with lemon and olive oil", which is one of his favorite dishes(surprise!). So, here we go, he washed the spinach, put water in a big pot, boiled them and dressed them. I only drained them while explaining some safety precautions. He did his own math and decided that he would add a pinch of salt every 4 handful of spinach. At the enhe wanted to squeeze half a lemon. I said do you want more? And he said, no - he smiled - the other half is for my water. Feel the love! It simply means better choices about your current favorites. Maybe instead of take out, you look for a copy cat recipe for your favorite dish at the restaurant. Maybe instead of freezer pizza, you make your own quick rise dough and use your favorite toppings. Homemade Mac n cheese in the Instant pot is soooooo easy! My kids and I like to make large batches of muffins using whatever fruit we have on hand. This week, they made banana muffins with fresh ground soft white wheat flour and duck fat for the cooking oil. Now, you probably don't have duck fat in your fridge! 😉 But I gurrentee your muffins are better than store bought snacks. Yes, these muffins are breakfast, lunch, and snacks all rolled into one around here. 🙂 The point isn't ditching all your favorite foods. But rather learning to make it yourself, substitute an ingredient, or finding a better source for some of the things you regularly choose. It's about harnessing imagination, empowerment, and creativity." ~ Guy Fieri Over the winter, we attended a kid's cooking class called Cook and Book hosted by Be Healthy Buffalo. This class is geared towards toddlers/preschoolers. The kids had so much fun creating their food. They got to use knives, cookie cutters, and sewing needles. Teaching kids how to cook is essential. They feel like they are a part of something and are learning so much, like the proper utensil use. The class starts with a book and finishes with a snack themed after the book. We are always looking for kid-friendly activities to do with our kids. Cook and Book is an excellent activity to do with little ones. Be Healthy Buffalo hosts classes for all ages (kids and adults). The bigger kids have excellent cooking classes that can take them to a different country. You can also find parent's night out and adult and me classes. Check out Be Healthy Buffalo website or Facebook page for more information. The event that we attended had free parking and classes are affordable for families. If you are looking for an excellent way to teach kids to cook or introduce cooking to them, I recommend one of these classes. ~Cooking in Candlelight : A blessing in disguise Today we lost power for a couple of hours on a Sunday evening. Ironic as it sounds, we ended up cooking together (with the little ones cutting the tomatoes) during that time and enjoyed it so much. We didn’t have microwave or oven working and the meal had to be simple. Although all we made was a simple bread pizza( you can call it so ; recipe in comments), the food seemed to taste better to the kids than the usual days when I am cajoling them to come for dinner. Do not have proper pictures because of the missing light but it was an experience that taught me something. We don’t realize how most of our life is spent in wading through the everydays, as we call them. Sometimes it helps to tune out the everyday need to do so much and be somewhere and give our very all to a moment (of darkness ;)) to enliven it. Your kids also sense the energy with which you participate in something and then it only grows, akin to lighting one candle from the other. Crazy as this sounds, please give candlelight/ emergency light cooking a try. Or maybe a candlelight meal without gadgets or phones every weekend. It will bring you a joy you had forgotten since the days of forced power cuts growing up in India. It will take you to simpler times and make you realize that nothing much has changed. Little guy made these at school and wanted to at home 🥰 ✨ oats ✨ honey ✨ peanut butter ✨ vanilla ✨ coconut ✨ chocolate chips ✨ salt 1️⃣ Add peanut butter, honey, vanilla, and salt in a bowl—stir till smooth 2️⃣ add in those oats! And your toppings 😋 We did coconut and chocolate chips🍫 3️⃣ Stir again, add to a pan, and press it down! I used parchment on both sides since it is sticky 4️⃣ In the fridge for 1-2 hours and ready to cut/eat! That’s it! Mine kinda broke apart, going to need to tweek it a little.
