Today we celebrate Cork’s own Mary Elmes to mark Nollaig na mBan. The newest bridge to span the north channel of the River Lee was named in her honour just last autumn. The weather has been on and off for pictures but not too long ago on a really bad day we found ourselves driving past this boarded up church that was off the beaten path, far away from everything. We had our camera and there was a funny mood with it with the really bad weather so we figured get a few shots. As we went around the house there was light coming through the door from the stained glass which was a surprise because we thought it was closed up. We decided to venture through the front door and we're amazed to find that the building was open for business. There was debris but no vandalism or neglect. It felt as if we walked in and innterupted something. Of all the places we have been this one gave the most 'vibes'. On a sunny Sunday afternoon we went out on a 4 castle hunt and this one was the first find. Castle Monteen what is still remaining anyway. A little to see inside the big tower a second floor to climb up to but basically a shell. It's on the GPS and on farmers field but all looked quiet enough. Sundays Well- 18/8/19 Opposite the entrance to the 'Shaky Bridge' can be found all that remains of a holy well known as 'Tobar Rí an Domhnaigh' or the well of the King of Sunday. In 1946,road works were carried out to give extra width to the roadway and footpath. The holy well was exposed, its masonry structure removed and the hill behind the old retaining wall was cut back. A shell midden,between 3 to 12 inches in thickness, was discovered during excavations.Middens consist of accumulated shells and the example discovered included oyster shells and bones of ox,sheep and pigs,possibly deposited by visitors and pilgrims making rounds. It has been suggested that such middens marked ancestral places of great importance. In 1644, the French traveller Le Gouz stated: 'a mile from Korq [Cork] is a well called by the English Sunday spring,or the fountain of Sunday, which the Irish believe is blessed and cures many ills. I found the water of it extremely cold. Sunday's Well is at the side of the high Road, and is surrounded by a rude high building,on a tablet in the wall of which the letters IHS mark it's ancient reputation for sanctity. It is shaded over by some fine ash trees,which render it a picturesque object'. Ash trees were regarded as sacred by the native Irish,further highlighting the well's importance.
