Join us for our monthly Death Cafe events at the Historic Congressional Cemetery! As an active burial ground, Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death, but just what is a Death Cafe? Death Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. Please join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording, note-taking, or personal details shared afterward. Our Death Cafe events are facilitated by a diverse array of volunteers, each bringing their unique energy to the table. They were complex and most of them didn’t do what I thought they were going to. The unpredictability felt authentic. ♥️Temazcal and Grieving♥️ The power of Temazcal 👊🏽🪶 Over the past 4 months Temazcal has become a regular practice of mine and a massive influence on the healing process that I have been going through. As we sweat, share, pray and sing together; each time is so unique. A new layer revealed, a new intention set, a different group of souls coming together and healing. ❤️🩹 When my Grandad passed away in February I had just arrived at the community in Guatamala @elcastillo I felt disconnected from my grief, unable to process it as I hadn’t been home to witness the last few days of his journey. I felt like a bad person, we were so close and spent a lot of time together over the last few years. How could I not even feel this pain? Yes he was old and lived a good life, so was never gonna feel the same as loosing my mum. But I wanted to feel more. I knew it had to be released at some point. Then a week passed and it was time for Temazcal at the community. Sweaty Sundays. I set the intention to honour my grandads life for this Temazcal and boy did the tears come. I screamed, howled, whaled, chanted and felt every bit of Grief that was alive in me. Releasing it to the sweat. Expressing these emotions is sacred and so important so that it doesn’t become stuck and doesn’t manifest as a potential imbalance in our bodies. I cannot wait to have Temazcal as part of the next Grief Retreat. To support us with this Grieving journey. No matter what form, stage and age of our grief. For me this is the only way to truly connect with myself is to disconnect for a little bit. I will be doing some consulting this evening and having a wonderful dinner with my honey, while uninstalling my Facebook and Instagram apps. These are the only two social media platforms that I personally use, and that dominate most of my time. Whether that is with work obligations as an end of life doula and care consultant or as a person who finds themselves doom scrolling till the wee hours of the night for no damn good reason. I have no ETA as to when I will be back on social media, but I would say a week is a good amount of time. Might be less and might be more. No need for concern for any of you that have it, this is simply my way of caring for myself. I hope you do this from time to time too.
