31 Days of Horror, Day Eighteen features a few favorite monsters from @seventiesscifiart. I am currently reading Worlds Beyond Time: Sci-fi Art of the 1970s by Adam Rowe and I am enjoying it immensely. Aside from being stuffed to the gills with phenomenal science fiction art–from the abstract and avant-garde to the trippy and surreal, from the murky and lurid to the vivid, vibrant, and hyperrealistic–on top of all that, it is written in exactly the way I want to read about art. What does any of this have to do with 31 Days of Horror? Well, I just today finished the Monsters chapter in a section of the book, wherein artists “blend fiction and arguable fact, looking at how artists and illustrators reinterpreted old science-fiction tropes like creepy creatures and alien priests to represent the latest cryptid or mystic vision.” I thought I might share two of my favorite works from this chapter, the first being Don Maitz’s 1977 cover for Eerie #91, and second, Richard Hescox’s 1985 cover for Alan Burt Akers’s Omens of Kregen, featuring a final confrontation from the book, in which a bestiary of googly-eyed, wriggly-tentacled monsters have assembled to protect their queen. I know these guys are meant to be scary, but there’s something about this menagerie that tickles my fancy. The “weird and gross but adorable” fancy! Willa Kickstarter Artist Announcement – Don Maitz!!! The fifth and final artist that was commissioned to create original art for the Willa Kickstarter is the one and only Don Maitz!!! Yes, you read that correctly… DON MAITZ!!! Having worked with publishers such as Cemetery Dance, Grant, and PS Publishing on special editions of beloved books like The Stand, The Shining, and Desperation, securing Don to work on this campaign was an absolute no-brainer for me. Don was actually the first artist I contacted when this all started and I am incredibly proud and honoured to have some of his work for our campaign. Don’s artwork is the foundation of the entire campaign and will make up several limited edition rewards. Those rewards include… sixty 11” x 17” signed and numbered prints of the Willa artwork, nineteen 11” x 17” signed and remarqued prints of the Willa artwork, three pieces of concept art that Don did while we were working through ideas for the piece, and of course the original 24” x 16” oil painting on Masonite that Don created and aptly titled “Willa Just After Sunset”. There is so much subtle detail contained in this image, but I won’t point it out, that’s for you to discover and enjoy. Where the first fours works of Gene Wolfe’s The Book of the New Sun (1980-83) were written before Shadow was published - essentially comprising one single work - The Urth of the New Sun (1987) is an actual sequel, the only sequel. A lot of the action in Urth takes place in space, a major departure from the tetralogy - not everyone likes it. The cover alone sends entirely different signals than Don Maitz’s fantasy-driven imagery. A personal favorite of mine (Maurice), Gene Wolfe’s Shadow of the Torturer. The first book of the Tetralogy Book of the New Sun. This is the first series in the Solar Cycle made complete by the Urth of the New Sun, The Book of The Long Sun, and The Book of The Short Sun. The Solar Cycle is set in the dying earth subgenre. This genre is set in the far future after life on earth is ending or has ended by a failing sun or cosmic event. I managed to secure first edition timescape flat signed paperbacks from John Pelan’s estate which were sold through Centipede Press’ Jerad Walters. They are immaculate. But the thrill of collecting for me resides in finding good copies of the frist edition first printing hardcovers from Simon and Shuster @simonandschuster which feature dustjacket art by Don Maitz. My name is not Tim, but I prefer signatures that are dated. This was signed at Archon, a SF convention in the St. Louis area.
