26) The Dark Half (1989) The Dark Half is about a writer named Thad Beaumont who has decided to no longer write under his pen name of George Stark. Under his real name, Thad’s contemporary fiction novels aren’t very successful, but his ultra-violent, dark crime novels penned under George Stark are hugely successful. But Thad feels happy and healthy, in a good place in his life, and feels like he can (and should) put George Stark to death—and so, he does. He holds a literal mock burial for George (in People magazine, no less), and moves on with his life. But George isn’t okay with his decision. George rises from this fictional death in physical form, and decides to take revenge on Thad and anyone who gets in his way. And, as Thad wrote on George’s headstone, George is “Not A Very Nice Guy.” You can see how Dark Half is almost pseudo-autobiographical for King, who wrote this book in response to being publicly outed as being his own pen name, Richard Bachman. Thad and George share a sinister bond, and the book leaves open the question of just how united the two are. It’s a sinister and dark book, an adequate reflection of George’s personality, and, I assume, a personal reflection of how King felt about his Bachman alter-ego. We are also introduced to Sheriff Alan Pangborn of King’s beloved Castle Rock. He makes a return as a main character in Needful Things, but Alan is one of my absolute favorite King characters. Have I read it? Yes (4 ⭐️) About the edition: 1st edition, 1st printing About the adaptation: The Dark Half was adapted into a film by George A. Romero in 1993. It was also adapted as a DOS video game in 1992. Se trata de una edición limitada a 400 copias numeradas, en tapas duras con sobrecubierta ilustrada por Liniers. Incluye el cuento inédito de King Maleza (Weeds) y otros de Clive Barker, Bev Vincent, Lisa Tuttle, etc. Son 26 cuentos en total. Maleza es un cuento que originalmente se publicó en la revista Cavalier en 1976 bajo el título Será necesario detener la maleza, luego reimpreso en otra revista para adultos en 1979, y nunca más volvió a publicarse como cuento. Fue adaptado como un segmento en la película Creepshow. Horror aside, the feeling of grief in this book is monstrously strong! A combination of the grief mixed with the horror leaves you running from the feeling of sheer dread from early on. Sometimes they are precious.” 🎡🎠 I was looking for the perfect summer horror/thriller read and I found it! Ghosts in a horror house in an amusement park set in the 1970’s is a fabulous setting. Joyland is perfect to read while sitting by the swimming pool on a hot day, sipping on your favourite cold beverage. This book is like strawberry ice cream. The first taste is sweet, the plot is the tasty waffle cone and the ending leaves you hungry for more. This isn’t the typical Stephen King horror. It’s a murder mystery filled with tons of suspense, an unsolved murder, carnival vibes and pure nostalgia. King is a master story teller and he writes characters in such a way that always keeps you invested. Devin was interesting, likeable and trustworthy and it was easy to sink into the story of his life in the summer of 1973 when he worked at Joyland. I wanted to keep reading, it’s a page turner! The end of the book sparked an emotional impact and I felt nostalgia for an era I never lived in. Loss and heartbreak affects everyone in different ways and the ending was bittersweet and handled with such care. The charm of the book is that it’s short and sweet. I think Joyland would be a great introduction if you want to start reading King books. #TwoForTuesday Featuring: • The Stand: The Complete & Uncut Edition • Night Shift I found these SK hardbacks at a Goodwill bookstore while visiting family in Florida last week, which then needed to fit into my checked bag. No small feat when one of the aforementioned books is 1,000+ pages! I'm happy to report that they both made it safely home with me and have become great "new" additions to my growing secondhand King collection. I haven't read either The Stand or Night Shift, but they both fit in perfectly with two challenges I have going on this year: My short story collection challenge, where I've been reading one short story collection per month, and my tome challenge which I will be starting again this summer, consisting of reading one long book each month from July - December. For my short story collection challenge I've read: • A Nest of Nightmares by Lisa Tuttle • A Ballet of Lepers by Leonard Cohen • The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury • Bloodchild and Other Stories by Octavia E. Butler For last year's tome challenge I read: • IT by Stephen King • Swan Song by Robert R McCammon • Blackwater: The Complete Saga by Michael McDowell • The Good House by Tananarieve Due • Shirley Jackson: A Rather Haunted Life by Ruth Franklin • The Terror by Dan Simmons The tome challenge ended up being a huge success in 2023 because almost all of the books I read for it ended up on my favorites of the year list. Two for Tuesday As far as I’m aware, this is the only English version of any of King’s works where the publishers split one book into two volumes for printing. Under the Dome is a massive tome that frankly I’ve been anxious to dive into due to sheer size. Long books don’t often intimidate me, but the lack of a mass market paperback size (it’s easier on the wrists, what can I say? 😂) and just how large this one is (without the added glory of IT or The Stand which most consider some of his best work) have kept me away for awhile so far. I would like to change that this summer though! To be honest, this is one of the most intriguing premises of any King book to me. And now that I have these editions splint into two easy to manage volumes, I think it’s finally time. The TBR pile keeps growing 😂 but we’ll get through it someday.
