Eat the weeds: All along the Trolley Trail, invasive English hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is in bloom along with hawthorns that have hybridized with our native Black hawthorn (Crataegus douglasii). When hybridized, the flowers may appear pink instead of white. When I was looking at and tasting berries last year, I found few native hawthorns along the trail. The good news is that you can freely forage the flowers, new leaves, and shoots right now. The flowers and young leaves can be battered and fried in the same way that I demonstrated in my Maple Blossom Fritters reel. The flowers can be used to make syrup and pudding as well. Young shoots, which have a nutty flavor, can be eaten raw and added to salads or cooked like asparagus as with so many other shoots this time of year (for example, Big Leaf maple, berry, and rose shoots). Later in the year, the berries can be eaten raw, although they aren't tasty like native hawthorn berries. I prefer to use them to make preserves and dry some berries and leaves for use in herbal tea blends. Dried berries can be ground and mixed with flour for use in baked goods as well. The seeds can be ground and used as a coffee substitute. Why is it invasive? English hawthorn is a prolific seed producer that forms dense thickets, excludes all native understory plants, and degrades wildlife habitat in oak woodlands. Birds spread the seeds and will choose English hawthorn seeds over native hawthorn species. English hawthorn hosts pests and plant diseases that affect crops and other species. Removal of English hawthorn is difficult and usually involves the use of herbicides injected into the stump due to its tendency to profusely sucker when cut down. #eattheweeds #eattheinvasives #invasivespecies #invasiveplants #englishhawthorn #crataegusmonogyna #foraging #edibleflowers #edibleleaves #edibleshoots #edibleberries #trolleytrail #boardmancreek #boardmanwatershed #habitatloss

New Shrub Sunday - Aronia melanocarpa Low Scape Snowfireยฎ PP34116 Named both for its spring-blooming white flowers and its fiery red and orange fall color, Aronia Low Scape Snowfireยฎ is the latest addition to the Low Scapeยฎ series. We canโ€™t get enough of plants with multiple seasons of interest, and this variety has it all, with loads of flowers in spring, glossy green foliage in summer, fall fruits that are edible to humans and wildlife, and vibrant fall color. This cultivar of the native Aronia melanocarpa is much more manageable, growing to only three to four feet tall and wide. Like the species, itโ€™s durable and tough; it can grow in full sun to part shade and it tolerates wet and dry soils. #springflowers #plantsmakepeoplehappy #Spring #plantlover #locallygrown #gardening #marianiplants #earlybloomer #earlyblooming #bloomingnow #attractpollinators #pollinator #pollinators #pollinatorplants #flowers #flowerstagram #flowersofinstagram #DeerResistant #edible #edibleplants #ediblegarden #edibleberries #edibleberry #chokeberryjam #aronia #aroniamelanocarpalowscapesnowfire #snowfire #SnowfireAronia

Amelanchier alnifolia 'Regent'. Serviceberry. Shadbush. Juneberry. Saskatoon. Blooming now. When I was a child running wild and free during summers spent vacationing in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we called them sugarplums. There was a tree on my grandparents' property that would be loaded with berries, a delicious treat that we would harvest and eat by the cupful. It wasn't until I was an adult that I discovered that serviceberries also came in shrub sizes, like the Regent shown here, and these became a favorite in my garden designs; they are perfect for smaller spaces. Amelanchier spp. have beautiful flowers in spring, tasty fruit that humans and birds (and other wildlife) can enjoy, stunning fall color, and retain a nice form in winter. They are a native species in this part of the world, and tolerate our weather extremes well. Plus, for me, eating one berry leads to wonderful childhood memories unlocked. #amelanchieralnifolia #amelanchier #serviceberry #shadbush #juneberry #sugarplums #childhoodmemories #fruittree #upperpeninsula #michiganmemories #michigantrees #gardentrees #gardenshrubs #amelanchiershrub #regentamelanchier #amelanchierregent #edibleberries #wildfruit #nativespecies #nativeplants #nativeshrubs #berriesforbirds #gardeningforbirds

Vaccinium parvifolium (red huckleberry) with its strong globular flowers already looking a little like the red huckleberries they will become. This one comes in after disturbances, say on fallen logs and alongside roads, and is quite common compared to V. ovatum. When V. p. is small, itโ€™s evergreen (tricking me a few times when I thought I was transplanting V. o.) It would be a good plant to add to restoration projects! Another lovely find on a woodland walk at the weekend..this is Oregon Grape..a non-native plant from North America, but is pretty common in the UK and known for the holly-like leaves and blue berries (not grapes). The roots and stems are used in Western herbal medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, notably for treating psoriasis and dermatitis. There are lots of creams and skin care products that include the compounds from this plant for these conditions. One of these compounds Berberine, is anti microbial, antifungal and antibacterial, and helpful for treating diarrhoea, gut inflammation, IBS and heartburn. I used to pass a large Oregon grape plant near my old house and the scent from the flowers was lovely. The roots are also used to make tinctures, decoctions and teas. You can also add the flowers to teas and the sour berries can be eaten but better cooked in a jelly or jam, although they are very seedy so would need straining. ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ™ #oregongrape #oregongraperoot #herbalmedicine #herbalremedies #springflower #berberis #mahoniaaquifolium #edibleflowers #edibleberries #herbalteas #herbaltinctures #topicalcream #psoriasistreatment #ibsrelief #gastricremedies #herbaltreatment #plantmedicine #planthealing #healing #naturesgifts #mothernature #healthandwellness #supportinghealth #skincaretreament #naturesmedicine

When the leaves are crushed, they produce an extract that acts as a mosquito repellent! . Lime berry Micromelum minutum Besides being a butterfly magnet it is a delightful native small tree that grows to around 7m but can easily kept pruned to around 2-4m. The clusters of cream/white flowers are beautifully fragrant and the berries that follow appearing firstly as yellow and slowly turning red are edible - albeit rather sour. The Limeberry is in the Rutaceae family along with its famous relatives the Citrus clan. It is native to parts of South Asia as well as along the northern east coast of Australia right down to Northern NSW. It will happily grow in full sun to semi-shade, Note: it is not frost tolerant. I ๐Ÿ’š this pic; I ๐Ÿ’š dewberries..... and it looks like they will be plentiful this year! These always stir fond #memoriesofgrowingup. The women/kids in my family would spend hours in the woods picking these (and collecting what wild consumables we saw along the way). Then, later that day we'd spend more hours making preserves & desserts that would be shared out to each household. #heirloomrecipes #growingupwild So, when I say "I grew up canning & dehydrating food stuff".... I did ๐Ÿ˜ฌ; I'm just not that good at it ๐Ÿ˜…! Here is the second print in the medicinal plant series created for Three Corners Health Services Society in Williamโ€™s Lake, British Columbia. Sxรบsem, (Soopolallie, Soapberry, or Canada Buffaloberry) is a deciduous shrub found in open woodlands and thickets throughout all of Canada (except PEI) and in the Western and Northern U.S. It grows between 1โ€“4 metres tall, and bears clusters of edible red or yellow berries. The Secwรฉpemc people harvest and process the berries to create a whipped, frothy dessert, by adding water, and sometimes sweeter berries like salal or thimbleberry. Sxรบsem berries contain saponin, which is what allows them to froth or foam when whipped, similarly to how egg whites fluff up when beaten to introduce air into the mixture. Sxรบsem can also be boiled and used as soap, and tea can be made from the twigs or berries to treat digestive problems. #medicinalplants #healingplants #indigenousplants #indigenousmedicine #limitededitionprint #botanicalillustration #botanicalart #soapberry #sxรบsem #linocut #linoprint #botanicalprint #edibleberries

Last Photos of the Goji: the decision was finally made to say good-bye. It was an unruly bush that produced beautiful leaves for soup and stir fries in late Spring, and slightly bitter berries in the fall. The root system shown in pic two was only a portion. Removing it has opened space to plant something new.

Crataegus Species, commonly known as Hawthorns, belong to a diverse genus of deciduous trees and shrubs, with around 100-200 species. They are part of the rose family, like apples and cherries. While the British native hawthorns bear edible fruits, they may not be the tastiest. However, many other species in this genus produce fascinating and delicious fruits. Surprisingly, despite its potential as a fruit crop, Crataegus hasnโ€™t received much attention from fruit growers or breeders, even though itโ€™s easy to grow in various conditions. These hardy plants thrive in maritime exposure, are pollution-tolerant, and can grow in urban areas. For optimal fruit production, they prefer sunny locations, but they can also succeed in semi-shade. Pest and disease issues are rare, except for fireblight. To combat this, infected plants should be removed promptly. To be cautious, many growers advise keeping cultivated apples away from Crataegus. Now, letโ€™s explore the fruit. It varies in size, color, texture, and flavor depending on the species. The ripe fruit looks like a small apple with a thin skin covering fleshy pulp. The woody seeds, often in clumps, are different from apple seeds. The flavor can range from bitter to absolutely delicious. Most species ripen their fruit in early to mid-autumn. You can consume the fruit raw, dry it for later use, or use it in preserves. Hawthorns vary in size, some developing thorns. Flowering occurs in early to late spring, and they look beautiful when laden with fruit in autumn. Beyond their taste, hawthorn fruits have a heart-healthy impact, particularly on weak heart conditions with high blood pressure. The young leaves of our native hawthorn can be eaten raw. They are not strongly flavoured, but make a pleasant addition to salads. The leaves of other species mention in this section can also be eaten in moderation.ย  However, if you try any leaves that have a noticeable bitter almond flavour these should not be eaten since they are mildly toxic. #crataegus #hawthorns #foraging #edibleberries #urbangardening #hawthorn #edibleleaves #naturalharvest #botanicaldiversity #hardyplants #hearthealth

Is Strawberry a Fruit? Exploring the Botanical Classification of Strawberries Is strawberry a fruit? Then you're probably thinking about their natural products, as most people do, but would they call it a natural product or a vegetable? Strawberries, it turns out, have a lot more going on. There can sometimes a significant difference between what is regular and what is deductively accurate. So, how about I solve this mystery and sort strawberries one final time? So, is The Strawberry a Fruit or a Vegetable? Strawberries are an organic food that is different from what you may expect. The red, muscular strawberry is not the natural organic product; it is the clogged heart of the strawberry bloom, whilst the actual plant natural goods are the small green'seeds' visible on the red tissue. This is due to the way strawberries grow and develop, which differs from what we normally consider natural products. Furthermore, to clarify, strawberries are not berries! They are commonly berries because they appear to go with a wide range of different berries, for example, blueberries and raspberries, although they are not true berries. Japanese Barberry (Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea) - very common bush with beautiful red leaves and bright red edible berries. Birds love them and people can eat them too (unless you are on some prescribed medication, in which case they could clash). I've tasted few and they are quite tart with a hint of sweetness. They can be dried and used in teas or in rise dishes. There is a popular recipe on internet "Zereshk Polow" (Persian Barberry Rice). If you are patient enough you can make barberry jam. They contain alkaloid berberine that kills bacteria, has anti-inflammatory properties, lowers blood pressure, stimulates the immune system and improves digestion. Be aware that it is a thorn bush so picking the berries might not be exactly "a walk in the park". #japanesebarberry #barberry #autumnberries #edibleberries #berberisthunbergi #dristalthunberguv

An overlooked beauty. The Nannyberry ๐Ÿ˜. Comes in a bush and smaller treeform. Gorgeous white blooms in May, rich red in the fall and dark berries for you or the birds (whoever gets to them first). I canโ€™t stress how hardy the Nannyberry is. Sun, shade, poor soil, drought, it will survive. #nannyberryviburnum #nannyberry #edibleberries #gardengirlgardening #smallbusiness

Itโ€™s a great time of year when the purple berries emerge on the American Beautyberry bushes! Also known as Callicarpa americana, these deciduous shrubs are about as non-showy as can be, until seemingly out of nowhere, these gorgeous fruits appear. The name comes from Greek and means beautiful fruit! Thereโ€™s also a variety that produces striking white berries. Beautyberry is native to the central and southeastern U.S. and is hardy in zones 6-12. The shrubs grow to 3-6โ€™ tall and wide, and prefer a full sun to part shade location. They can be pruned in late winter, when old canes can be removed, as the rather small flowers and showy fruits emerge on new stems. Itโ€™s said that when multiples are planted in a garden, more fruits will appear. The fruits are edible, and mildly sweet, but are astringent, so donโ€™t eat too many. Wild birds and mammals including deer enjoy the berries, so distribution can be widespread. We love the berry color! #beautyberry #americanbeautyberry #callicarpaamericana #purpleberries #nativeplant #southeastnative #edibleberries #chapelhill #chapelhillgardenclub #zone7b #showyfruit

Wild Black Cherries (Prunus serotina) are one of the easiest wild fruits to gather quickly and in abundance. Not every tree will taste good. And even on the same tree, one year could be an off-tasting year. Ya gotta just, check โ€˜em. Although small and somewhat of an acquired taste - sweet but also a little bitter, I find myself craving them whenever they are in season and abundant. Only the black ones in this pic are super ripe. The red ones are under ripe and not great. Sometimes youโ€™ll have to pick through some stems here and there but theyโ€™re really not that much work. And if it is work itโ€™s FUN work! Low hanging fruit can be easily gathered with your hands but you can also gather great quantities at once by putting a large sheet or tarp underneath the tree, and tapping the branches with a long pole. Theyโ€™ll come raining down! More times than not I will simply just grab a handful of these cherries, pop them in my mouth and spit out the pits. The pits are not known to be edible, and you may want to be careful if youโ€™re putting these fruits in a food mill that you donโ€™t crush the seeds with the pulp. ๐Ÿ˜‰ #foraging #wildbkackcherry #edibleberries

Red Huckleberry. Not all our red berries are edible but these are and they can be pretty good! they tend to ripen over a long season too instead of all at once, like most of the blue huckleberries. #washingtonnativeplants #nativeplantsofnorthamerica #pnwnativeplants #pnwwonderland #vacciniumparvifolium #redhuckleberry #pnwforaging #edibleberries

Corneliancherry dogwood (Cornus mas): This tree is a member of the dogwood family and is found in the mountains and forests of Utah. It is a small tree, typically growing to be 20-30 feet tall. The Corneliancherry dogwood has white flowers that bloom in the spring and red berries that ripen in the summer. Are you a tree story fanatic? Iodex berries! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š Yes, you heard it right! Locally, these are called 'Iodexโ€™ berries as the ripe blue fruits taste like iodex (pain balm) and serves the same healing purpose. Interesting, right? Also known as Gaultheria Trichophylla Or Himalayan snowberries, it's a small prostrate shrub (though almost creeping over surface) widespread in Himalayan alpines. I saw these bright baby-blue berries at 3400m and above mostly hidden in the foliage. These blue fruits are really beautiful, and they taste good, provided one can ignore the typical iodex smell in them. . . . . #gaultheriatrichophylla #himalayansnowberry #valleyofflowers #valleyofflowerstrek #himalayanflora #himalayanberry #himalayanbeauty #himalayanberries #edibleberries #uttrakhand #alpineberries #alpineberry #blushinghues๐ŸŒฟ
