This text was carefully cared for, moved from Iceland and passed through families for almost 150 years here in Canada. DECEMBER WRAP-UP Time to say goodbye to December and 2023. In total I’ve read 74 books this year, which is 2 books more than last year, so that's cool but I think this number will drop in 2024. Here’s what I’ve read this month. (My top 2023 reads are in my previous post). 📘 The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter I’d been wanting to read this story for many many years. Finally I got my hands on a used copy and… well, I was quite disappointed. Maybe for the time it was written, it was something new and exciting but the plot and characters of this story felt quite underwhelming and sometimes silly. I did like the lyrical writing and the vivid imagery that created the sense of fairytale-like setting. 3⭐ 📘 Solenoid by Mircea Cărtărescu The hype is real about this beast of a novel though it took me some time to finish it. There are many long in-depth reviews of this book on youtube so I won’t say much here. It is a strange, partially surreal/hallucinatory and meandering account of an introverted school teacher in Bucharest who is pondering on life and its meaning or lack of meaning. I’m glad I’ve read it and I really loved some aspects of it but it won’t be a personal favourite, some parts were not that interesting to me and some of the misogynistic and narcissistic leanings of the protagonist were annoying. It is still worth a read though. The English translation by Sean Cotter is really fantastic. 4.5⭐ 📘 Egil’s Saga (from The Sagas of Icelanders) A must-read! This was my first encounter with an Icelandic saga and wow I have enjoyed this so much! A very epic, engaging story full of fun feuds. Egil is a terrible guy but you love to follow his adventures. If you like Joe Abercrombie’s novels, you should definitely give this a go! This summer I get the chance to travel to Iceland to connect with my ancestral home and meet extended family members, so of course I wanted to do a little light reading of the sagas! Fun fact, as a part of the program I get access to an extensive genealogy database that dates back to the founding of Iceland, and I recently discovered that I’m descended from some pretty cool people!! My 28th great grandmother is Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir who was a main character in the Laxdæla Saga (as shown in the next few pages). Egil Skallagrimsson and the nithing pole Egil Skallagrimson feuded with a lot of people, but one of his biggest grudges was against King Eirik Bloodaxe and Queen Gunnhild, also known as the Mother Of Kings 👑 At one point, Egil got so mad that he sacrificed a horse and cut off the poor beast’s head to use in runic black magic!! Egil was a strange character, a powerful warrior as well as sorcerer, and even his most powerful enemies feared him! To quote the saga: “And when all was ready for sailing, Egil went up into the island. He took in his hand a hazel-pole, and went to a rocky eminence that looked inward to the mainland. Then he took a horse's head and fixed it on the pole. After that, in solemn form of curse, he thus spake: 'Here set I up a curse-pole, and this curse I turn on king Eric and queen Gunnhilda. (Here he turned the horse's head landwards.) This curse I turn also on the guardian-spirits who dwell in this land, that they may all wander astray, nor reach or find their home till they have driven out of the land king Eric and Gunnhilda.' This spoken, he planted the pole down in a rift of the rock, and let it stand there. The horse's head he turned inwards to the mainland; but on the pole he cut runes, expressing the whole form of curse. After this Egil went aboard the ship. Our guide displayed, not only her vast knowledge on Snorri and the fantastic church, but switched easily between Icelandic, Norwegian, German, English, Finnish and Danish depending on the nativity of whom she spoke with, fascinating! Kveldulf, moments after avenging his son, moments before collapsing and dying. A scene from Egil’s Saga, one of the most popular sagas of the Icelanders. The saga describes a scene where Kveldulf and his son Skallagrim lead a savage nighttime ambush against a ship full of King Harald’s men, loyal soldiers as well as friends and family. These men had taken this ship from Thorolf, Kveldulf’s murdered son. A hersir like Kveldulf would not pass up an opportunity for blood vengeance. Kveldulf, despite his age, grabbed an axe and entered berserker rage, tearing the ship’s crew to pieces. The saga says: “ Kveldulf had in his hand a battle-axe; but when he got on board, he bade his men go along the outer way by the gunwale and cut the tent from its forks, while he himself rushed aft to the stern-castle. And it is said that he then had a fit of shape-strength, as had also several of his comrades. They slew all that came in their way, the same did Skallagrim where he boarded the ship; nor did father and son stay hands till the ship was cleared. When Kveldulf came aft to the stern-castle, he brandished high his battle-axe, and smote Hallvard right through helm and head, so that the axe sank in even to the shaft; then he snatched it back towards him so forcibly that he whirled Hallvard aloft, and slung him overboard. Skallagrim cleared the forecastle, slaying Sigtrygg. Many men plunged into the sea; but Skallagrim's men took one of the boats, and rowed after and slew all that were swimming. “ The berserker rage was too much for Kveldulf and he collapsed shortly afterwards. Skallagrim put his father’s body in a coffin and threw it overboard, then followed it across the waves to to Iceland. He settled his family where Kveldulf’s coffin landed. A mighty Norse warrior of noble blood could think of no better way to leave this world, I suppose. If you’re in Borgarnes, don’t miss the Settlement Center, which has two excellent exhibitions. You go round each with an audio guide over half an hour or so. The Settlement one, about the early history of the first Icelanders between about 784 and 930AD, is good. The Égil’s Saga one is unmissable, with all the horror and drama of the story brought to life in the basement of the museum. I’ve been twice and been astonished by it both times. The Viking migrations to Dublin highlight a certain thirst for power and fame, as they were, to a higher degree, unattainable in their homeland. If they wanted power and fame, they needed to find it another place than their homeland. Which some did. The Viking raids came as a shock to the Irish population, and when the Vikings overwintered in Dublin in 841-842 AD, they had come to stay. For a while, at least. Dublin arguably became the first-ever documented urban community constructed in Ireland. Dublin was quickly recognized as the most powerful Scandinavian Viking kingdom and became a central place for trade and international connections. I finished reading Egil's saga today which I think is only my third book for April which goes to show how bad my work/life balance has been recently..... I'm so glad I read it, inspired by the YouTubers studying it as part of Sagalong an annual event now, where they jointly read the old sagas. This one is set in the 10th century, a scandi drama before they became fashionable Netflix territory. There are a lot of comings and goings between Norway, Iceland and even England/Scotland. The chapters are incredibly short, like half a page, some of them, and the stories are quite scant in detail compared to the current day. Egil himself has to be one of the most horrible characters I've ever had the pleasure to share time with. He's meaner than Scrooge McDuck with the personality of a Pitt bull terrier.
