... Why, for example, in the rather mediocre story about Sherlock Holmes, The Sign of Four, is everything yellow? Just count with me: Yellow fog The yellow glare from the shop windows A yellow turban A yellow sash A blaze of yellow light Yellow and irregular teeth Yellow light of the lantern (psst, I’m making a point here, so yeah, I will keep enumerating all things that are yellow in the novel) Yellow light (again) Yellow lantern (again) Yellow teeth (again) Yellow turban (again) Now, I absolutely agree with your exclamation, “And what should it be? Red teeth and green light?” There-there, you are right. On the other hand, red or green colors, for example, are way less presented in the story.  So, I don’t really believe that it will hurt to think, just for a bit, about the yellow color and its significance in the novel. Yellow. What is it associated with for you? What is it about? And I will even dare take another step and check its meaning in a dictionary of literary symbols. Among the following associations, like the sun, autumn, and the harvest, we can find the particularly interesting ones that fit into our story: jealousy, envy, betrayal, and, of course, gold. And that’s what, basically, The Sign of the Four is about. Now, you can also say that it is all so far-fetched, that the curtains are just blue, and writers never really think about all these hidden symbols. Guess what? I absolutely agree with you. Consciously, they don’t do that. But subconsciously, why not?  And here’s the thing we should understand about our culture and way of thinking: There are categories, like the dualisms of male/female, black/white, predator/prey, parent/children that have existed in our minds for millions of years. For millions of years, we have been categorizing our reality without even realizing it. Just read Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules For Life to see what I’m talking about. SWIPE left to read the rest➡️➡️➡️

On this day (or the 13th of May) in 1373, Julian of Norwich thought she was dying. She received a series of sights and sounds from God that she called “showings”—words and images meant to teach and form her into the wild breadth and depth of the love of God. I am so thankful for her witness, as my favorite medieval teacher and friend. “And this word, ‘Thou shalt not be overcome,’ was said full sharply and full mightily for security and comfort against all tribulations that may come. He said not ‘Thou shalt not be tempested, thou shalt not be travailed, thou shalt not be diseased,’ but he said, “Thou shalt not be overcome.” God wills that we take heed of this word, and that we be ever mighty in secure trust, in good and bad. For he loves us and he likes us, and he wills that we love him and like him and mightily trust in him, and all shall be well. And soon after all was finished, and I saw no more.” (ch. 68) If you’d like to try reading this amazing teacher for yourself, I recommend the translation in the Classics of Western Spirituality series (pictured here), translated by Colledge & Walsh. If you’d like to tackle the Middle English for the first time, this edition by Watson & Jenkins (Penn State Press) is helpful for beginners. #julianofnorwich #allshallbewell #medieval #medievalliterature #mysticism #bookish #booklove #whattoread #whattoreadnext #bookstagram #bookstagrammer

I enjoyed reading about the conspiracies by Eleanor and her sons in Devil's Brood as they all tried to find their footing in the land that Henry was so determined to keep pinned under his control. Penman did well not to make Henry a pitiful creature but showed his own flaws in keeping his sons under his thumb, all four felt smothered and tied down and unable to show their merit. Henry held a coronation for his eldest but then gave him no work or responsibility concerning the kingdom. He marries another son to a wealthy young woman who would bring much land to the marriage, but then keeps the land for himself. He gives land, title and responsibility to another son, but quickly pulls those lands out from under him. Penman does well in portraying the problems of Henry the King and Henry the Father. As a king, he was strong but as a father he was weak. The portrayal of Eleanor, first conspirator then prisoner, is balanced against Henry’s strong-arming and later his bleak desperation. Likewise, Penman shows the nuance of each of the couple’s children and how they bear their limitations and conceive of their conspiratorial exploits. No character comes across as the hero and none are fully perceived as the villain. Everyone in this story is portrayed from multiple angles therefore humanizing them, making this book a great showcase of historical fiction writing. This middle book of a five-part series balanced the final years of King Henry’s reign and gave me insight as to what England might have looked like under the leadership of Henry’s four sons. There was a transition to the next generation and it was enthralling to read about the different sinister ways the young princes attempted to gain the crown for themselves. #britishmonarchy #plantagenet #platagenetdynasty #henryii #eleanorofaquitaine #sharonkaypenman #bookstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendations #historicalfiction #britishhistory #medievalliterature #devilsbrood

Did you guess correctly?! ✍🏻📚🤓 Boethius was pivotal writer, bridging the gap between the ancient and medieval words. It’s largely due to him that some of the classics of Greece and Rome survived. He even influenced medieval writers, such as Dante. His most famous work, the consolation of philosophy, depicts a fictionalized account of his exile, and his process of dealing with his impending death. In the book, philosophy appears to him as a woman, much like lady wisdom in the book of Proverbs in the Bible. Intermixed with his dialogue with Lady Philosophy are poems. I find it fascinating that in order to understand deep philosophical and theological concepts, this ancient writer wrote poetry. #book #books #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booknerd #boethius #consolationofphilosophy #guesstheauthor #amreading #bookworm #medievalliterature #ancientliterature

My installation “I Will Be With You Again (Everything That Fades Away is Beautiful)” on the cover of the academic book “Laments For The Lost in Medieval Literature” edited by Jane Tolmie & MJ Toswell, published by Brepols 2010. Just a throwback to this project… it is an honour to have a photo of my work on the cover of this interesting niche of scholarly essays. This piece was created in reference to the idea of impermanence, loss & grief. Someone brought me these mummified hummingbirds which had died in their cabin at some point while it was closed up, and when they went there after months, they were sadly found on the windowsill, having gotten inside and been trapped and tried to get out. A sad reality and metaphor for many symbolic and reflective aspects of life and death, of ideas, of relationships, of afterlife, of actual struggles and entrapments of modern society. and tender care and intimate loss. I used powdered mineral pigment, wood ash, skeletal leaves, along with the hummingbirds. 🩵💜 • •• ••• •• • #hummingbird #hummingbirds #hummingbirdsofinstagram #scholar #scholarly #lament #laments #medieval #medievalliterature #contemporaryart #loss #death #lifeanddeath #fade #fadeaway #trapped #book #bookcoverdesign #bookcoverdesign #bookcoverart #academicbook #essays #impermanence #mummified #mummification #mixedmedia #mixedmediaart #ephemera #ephemeral #ephemeralart

The Sagas of the Icelanders: my favorite item in my library 📚🇮🇸 I just finished teaching a course that focused on Old English and Old Norse literature. We started in Anglo-Saxon England, but spent the majority of the semester reading the Icelandic sagas. I figured I'd use this opportunity to share one of my prized bookish possessions: the boxed set of the complete corpus of the Sagas of Icelanders (in English translation) published by Leifur Eiriksson Pub. I splurged on this full set during the pandemic when I was working on a chapter but couldn't access my university library's copies. This is the most I've ever spent on a book/boxset, and I haven't regretted it for a second. In my opinion, this boxset contains not only THE jewels of medieval literature, but some of greatest literary works in all of world literature. I don't think every home library needs a copy of the full boxset, but I do think you should consider one of the anthologies in slide 3 — they're great starting points. Just be careful — in my experience, reading the Penguin anthology has led to a lifelong obsession already resulting in a difficult-to-market MA and PhD. For those brave enough though, here's my suggested reading order for anyone getting into the sagas: Start with Hrafnkel's saga to get a sense of the culture surrounding feuds and law before moving to the best short saga, Gisli's saga. After Gisli, try out a regional saga like Eyrbyggja saga, Laxdæla saga, or Reykdæla saga. These sagas don't focus on an individual so much as an entire region of Iceland and you'll begin to get a sense of the socio-historical scale at which most of these sagas operate. Next, try an epic. I recommend Egil's saga, Njal's saga, and Grettir's saga in that order. From here, follow what interested you: if it's the psychological portraits of the viking poets and their feuds, read the warrior-poets' sagas; if it was the decentered narratives that included hundreds of characters, read a regional saga like Orkneyinga saga; if it was the width of the world in which they travel, read the Vínland sagas. Have you read any of the sagas? If so, which is your favorite and if not, why not?!

#sagasoficelanders #iceland #isländersagas #translation #medievalliterature #middleages #medievallife #oldbooks #vikings #mittelalter

In May last year I participated in a workshop at the University of Birmingham, co-hosted by Dr Megan Cavell and Prof Renée Trilling to create playful resources for teaching Old English language and grammar. It was so much fun and I’m delighted to say that our Playful Pedagogy Resource is now available and free to download via the University of Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship (IDEALS). Link in my bio 🔗 The activities include a dictionary pilgrimage, preposition quest, the ‘treasure case’ of grammatical case, ‘making a meal’ of verbs, story telling activities, and (one of my favourites) the Beowulf Brawl noun declension board game! Congrats to all involved- I had such fun taking part and it’s been great to have a go at these activities with my students. Eirik the Red and other Icelandic Sagas "He walked under the woodpile and heard the noise of riding from the north into the home-field. He saw that there were nine women there, all in dark raiment, and they held drawn swords in their hands. He heard likewise the noise of riding from the south into the home-field, and there too were nine women, all in bright raiment, and on white horses. Thidrandi now wanted to get back indoors and tell them of this sight, but the dark- clad women came up with him first and set upon him." ~ The Icelandic sagas are somewhat unique in that a character's emotional responses are implied by actions taken rather than words spoken; the contemporary audience would have been much more alert to subtle slights of honour without anything being explicitly stated. So, to our ears, this appears a terse, crisp literature... but certainly not a bare one. The sagas concern themselves with family feuds, legal niceties, cautionary tales, and far-flung travels - Eirik to Greenland and Autumn to Rome, all of which are carefully embedded in actual historical events and extensive family genealogies - which must have lent all the greater credibility to their accompanying fantastical elements! The sagas in this volume are: • Hen-Thorir • The Vapnfjord Men • Thorstein Staff-Struck • Hrafnkel the Priest of Frey • Eirik the Red • Thidrandi whom the Goddesses Slew • Autumn and the Bear • Gunnlaug Wormtongue • King Hrolf and his Champions #bookstagram #eirikthered #saga #icelandicsagas #iceland #medievalliterature #literature #viking

Hear the original tale and find out why it still has good ideas to teach children today, even if it is very ancient and unfamiliar in some ways. Are the parents in the story terrible? 🃏⚔️🏰MEDIEVAL LITERATURE🏰⚔️🃏 hi friends! here is the first post in a little series I’m doing where I recap the english courses I’ve taken in uni :) so, I bring you part one: medieval literature. this course was the one I was most intimidated of going into; however, I think it has ended up being my favourite english courses I’ve taken so far! over the course of the semester, we read texts between the years 500-1500 so it was really cool to see how literature evolved over that period of time. we also had a quill making day for one of our classes which was super fun! the big texts we read were: beowulf, judith, excerpts from the canterbury tales (general prologue, the miller’s tale, the wife of bath’s tale), and sir gawain and the green knight. we also read a lot of other poems, plays, and lyrics! something that is commonly seen across my english courses is how the literature of a given period very directly reflects the views/beliefs/expectations of society at that point in time, which is a big reason why literature is so important. something we talked about a lot in our units on the early medieval period was warrior culture which i found to be so interesting to learn about! I wanted to write about the concept of the medieval monster here but I started writing and realized I had a lot to say about it so I think I will do a separate post for it! but, for now I will say that it was one of the topics that has stuck with me the most from the course. and finally, my term paper topic! the prompt I chose was for explore how characters use speech to talk their way through politically charged situations. I chose to write about beowulf’s introductory speech to hrothgar and judith’s speech to the people of her town after killing holofernes. this is also something I could probably make a separate post for because I’ve got a lot of material for it! thanks for letting me info dump hehe (and stay tuned for more)

The Prose Edda - Snorri Sturluson 'You say that all the men who have fallen in battle since the beginning of the world have now come to Óðin in Valhalla - I imagine that there must be a huge crowd of them there.' Then High One replied: 'What you say is true. There is a huge crowd there, and there will be many more still, and yet they will seem too few when the wolf comes.' ~ The Prose Edda was ostensibly written as a sort of reference guide to the pagan myths, as well as providing examples of the various poetic metres and kennings used by the skalds. In actuality however Snorri (a poet, historian, lawspeaker who lived 1179-1241) deviates somewhat from his task at hand and instead produces a work of such quality that it seems almost to have been written as an ode to the old myths, or perhaps even a counterattack against Christianisation? The central poem here, 'Deluding of Gylfi', is the Norse equivalent of Hesiod's 'Theogony', this gives the full picture from creation to Ragnarok and clearly embodies many of the values and concerns of the North Men, as well as some interesting Celtic influences besides (n.b. the adventures of Thor). But, unlike Hesiod, this is mythology at the end of its generative stage and Snorri is not only recording but is now faced with the task of systemising his material into a cohesive and presentable whole. #bookstagram #theproseedda #proseedda #edda #snorri #snorristurluson #norse #norsemythology #mythology #literature #medievalliterature #medieval

From Dante’s Paradiso, Canto X, lines 7-12 — I read the Divine Comedy in the 10 days preceding Easter. I was highly intimidated by it because of its historical & literary prestige, and because of its dense verse. We had discussed the Divine Comedy briefly in my senior year literature class, but we never read anything more than a canto or two. This had been on my TBR list for quite some time since then. Without even knowing when the Divine Comedy takes place (begins on Good Friday 1300), I began it approximately a week before Good Friday, and finished it very late on Easter, which is around the time Dante’s journey ends. — While it was probably the hardest classic I’ve read yet, it was a most rewarding read. It really is a masterpiece, and is deserving of its prestige. If you haven’t read it yet, I recommend you do so.

In this episode of your favorite podcast about the Icelandic sagas, Klaufi rescues his friend Karl the Red from a terrible Viking called Atli in Norway. But don't get too excited about Klaufi becoming the hero of this saga. Back in Iceland, he kills a whole bunch of people, causes general havoc, and even gets married by dubious means. We also get to see him in full berserker mode, which can be fun (if viewed from a distance). All of this makes one wonder, just how long will the people of Svarfaðardalur continue to put up with Klaufi and his shenanigans? Along the way, we talk about the tendency of this saga narrative to dip out when it's time for action. We look a little deeper into the question of Gris and his motivations. And we dip our toes briefly into the subject of medieval Icelandic dying herbs and mosses. This is what I've been reading for the past few months. I discovered and fell hard for the Icelandic sagas, and I've read and already re-read all the ones I own, because they're a vast, complex, inter-textual new world, and each seem to merit re-reading. Other medieval stuff: Beowulf, again. And the Canterbury Tales, complete for the first time. Intimacies was also quite good, it was great to wallow through another dense Pamuk (my 7th by him) and I loved re-reading Transit, what a fun book. #bookstagram #icelandicsagas #medievalliterature #rachelcusk #orhanpamuk #thesagasoftheicelanders #katiekitamura #beowulf #seamusheaney #bookijustread #canterburytales

Gothic Art - Teresa G. Frisch "And the clerestory both inside and out shall be made of smooth ashlar stone and it shall rest on ten mighty piers each with four attached half-columns, the two upper ones connecting with the choir and the two lower ones joining with the nave. And each of the side aisles shall have five bays rising above the steeple, each bay having a window and every window four lancets, identical in all points with the windows of the clerestory of the choir. And both aisles shall have six mighty arches butting on either side against said steeple, similar to the arches of the choir both with respect to tablestone and the crest, with a square battlement on top." ~ That the chief motivation for artisans was a sort of God-inspired upward grope towards an ineffable standard of beauty is, perhaps, a bit of a simplification: technical and aesthetic minutiae were very much weighed up and debated over with the utmost care. This was a marriage between both art and science - oh, and also a great deal of ego... "It is conceivable that at the start this conviction was founded on Christian, and in particular, on contemporary Thomist doctrines, but quite clearly pride and passionate dedication to their own commune very soon led to rivalry among the [Tuscan] cities for the reputation of greatest beauty." This is a book of written source material which begins in 1140 with an account by the Abbot Suger on the church of Saint-Denis, then Gervase on the rebuilding of Canterbury after its fire, Villard on a variety of engineering matters, passages from Cennino's book on painting techniques, and also accounts on Westminster Abbey, books, tapestries and ornamental tombs. Gothic art began with churches but from about 1270 the royal and feudal courts began to patronise artists to work on their palaces and manors, this environment then set the stage for the Renaissance which helped to clarify... 'a definition of artistic goals in theory which the artist himself had never stopped pursuing in practice.' #bookstagram #gothicart #teresagfrisch #art #arthistory #medievalliterature #medievalarchitecture #medieval #gothicarchitecture #renaissance #church

Egil's Saga "The message said that Egil Skallagrimsson had a matter to attend to with him. Atli took his weapons; so did all the men who were fit to fight, and they went outside. Under the ancient custom every man had the right to challenge another to a duel, whether to prosecute a case or defend it. After that they prepared themselves for the duel. Egil came forward wearing a helmet on his head and carrying a shield in front of him, with a halberd in his hand and his sword Slicer tied to his right hand." ~ An eventful and dynamic saga which begins with King Harald the Fair-Hair's campaign to unify Norway into a single entity, the upheavals caused by this attempt resulted in the migrations of many families who sailed out to England, Iceland and the Orkneys. Egil himself is a curious blend of savagery and poetic sensibility, he participates in numerous Viking raids, man-to-man trails by combat, and a feud with Harald's son Eirik the Bloodaxe in York, yet at the same time he brings each of these events into song, fashioning legends as he lives them, keenly aware that he IS the heritage. I'd recommend this one to anyone looking for an introduction to the sagas. #bookstagram #egilssaga #saga #norsesagas #literature #medievalliterature #viking

‘Lisabetta’s brothers slay her lover: he appears to her in a dream, and shews her where he is buried: she privily disinters the head, and sets it in a pot of basil, whereon she daily weeps a great while. The pot being taken from her by her brothers, she dies not long after.’ - Boccaccio’s Decameron (IV.5). . Keats’ Isabella or the Pot of Basil (published in 1820) is based on a story from the Renaissance author Boccaccio’s Decameron. It explores the traditional theme of star-crossed lovers. The poem tells the tragic tale of Isabella and Lorenzo. . The skull on the pot sure is subtle, eh? . #geschichtswissenschaft #geschichte #history #tristan #literaturgeschichte #literatur #literature #medievalliterature #frauendienst #courtlylove #minne #ritter #knight #knights #rittertum #knighthood #chivalry #held #hero #mittelalter #middleages #hochmittelalter #highmiddleages #mediaevistik #mediävistik #medievalstudies #medieval #vortrag #universitätmannheim #mannheimuniversity Symbolbild, Foto: Matt Benson
