Richard Louv coined the term Nature-Deficit Disorder® to serve as a description of the human costs of alienation from nature. Most children and teens today are spending less time outside and more time on the screen, which is having an unfavorable impact on their well-being. This is a very interesting read on how climate change can affect mental health in kids. A new study by the American Psychological Association and ecoAmerica revealed that children are at risk for developing mental health issues due to the changing climate, even if they’re not witnessing it directly. This climate anxiety can lead to a variety of mental and physical health disorders and starts as early as the womb. The report noted that acute events (fires, floods, hurricanes, etc) and ongoing events (heat, droughts, air pollution) are all sources of climate distress. Frequent or ongoing occurrences of these events, whether experiencing them directly or through a parent, have a negative impact on children’s mental health. What is EMDR Therapy? How can it treat trauma in children? A surprising treatment for trauma that’s been effective for adults is increasingly being used for children, too. EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, involves having a child recall a distressing experience while engaging in eye movements or being tapped on alternate sides of their body. 2023 was a great year as reflected in our 2023 impact report. 💜 Thanks to so many of you, the Extraordinary Lives Foundation (ELF), had an amazing 2023 as we were able to bring our work to the next level. We partnered with Assemblywoman woman Laurie Davies and California State Treasurer Fiona Ma to bring a new house resolution to Sacramento for claiming September as Children’s Emotional Wellness Month. ✨ This achievement contributed to raising awareness and promoting emotional well-being throughout California and beyond. In addition, ELF created a Children’s Emotional Wellness Program powered by Piggie Bear, which was received by over 80 classrooms throughout Orange County.
