#FeedingFriday A study by Swansea University academics into powdered infant formula preparation safety has revealed that 85% of the 74 infant formula preparation machines tested by parents in UK homes did not appear to produce water that would be hot enough to kill all harmful bacteria in infant formula, and this could pose a serious risk to infant health. The safest way to prepare a bottle of formula is to always follow the NHS advice, which recommends using a kettle to heat the water: Link in Bio. If you do use a formula preparation machine, the Food Standards Agency (who funded the research) recommends: 👍Test the temperature of the water dispensed using a food thermometer. [Do not use this water to make a feed as the thermometer could contaminate the water] 👍If the temperature is below 70C, report this to your manufacturer AND either your Local Trading Standards or Citizens Advice. 💥In addition, the study team recommend that if your machine is producing water below 70C, you do not use it to prepare feeds💥 You can read the full research report in our bio. #AskAMidwife #NeverAlone #WithYouEveryStepOfTheWay #Pregnancy #NHS #PregnancyAdvice #NHS #LMNSHumberAndNorthYorkshire #PregnancyJourney #Antenatal #LabourAndBirth #Postnatal #Newborn #InfantFeeding #UNICEF #PacedFeeding #ResponsiveFeeding

Flower Garden Views… 🌸🌸🌸 Swipe for more 👉👉👉 A relatively quiet day today. I think my bug is trying to make a comeback 😔 Anyhoo! Managed to complete the first #feedingfriday of the year - giving a thorough watering and liquid feed to all pots and planters. I know it’s been cold and wet but very little rain makes into those pots! Watered the tender annuals in the conservatory aka makeshift greenhouse (see story). ‼️ Gave the roses a spray with @uncletomsrosetonic as I’ve spotted the first signs of rose rust. Keep an eye out for this. Small bright orange dots on the leaves (both sides and I’ll post to stories). If you see it, snip the leaf off and discard. You don’t want to let rust take over your precious roses! Vigilance is key! Happy Gardening for the weekend 💚 #englishgarden #cottagegarden #countrygarden #organicgarden #nodiggarden #guyswhogarden #gardeninglove #instagardener #flowergardens #englishcountrygarden #englishcottagegarden #cottagegardenstyle #gardeninspiration #gardendesign #springgarden #perennialgarden #plantingdesign #containergarden

We're turning our attention to the lawn this #feedingfriday. Few lawns are moss free, and too much moss can cause drainage problems in wet weather and dry patches in summer. Try Vitax Moss Remover no Rake, which will not only tackle the moss, but feeds the lawn too. Click the link in the bio for more information. #gardeningtips #gardening #moss #greenerlawn

#FeedingFriday Demand for access to donor human milk is increasing from hospitals and families in the community facing breastfeeding challenges. We would be very grateful if you could take part in a research survey to understand what people in the UK know about human milk banking, how they think and feel about the service, and how donor milk should be prioritised. This online questionnaire will take about 20 minutes to complete. The work will also help guide future research studies. You can access the survey here: https://bit.ly/donorhumanmilk It will ask for demographic information, opinions about donor milk and milk banking. There is also an optional section where you can give your consent to participate in follow-up interviews and focus groups with the study team.

We are on our way to pick up a load of hay on this #fivedollarfriday and could really use your help with this purchase. We are picking up hay about every 9-11 days and each load costs us $880. We are having to feed more to the mustangs due to the extreme cold temperatures just so that they have enough energy to keep themselves warm. We need your help to make this continuous hay purchase possible. Any and every amount adds up to assist us with the hay purchases. If you are able and willing to donate to help us keep the herd fed we would be incredibly grateful! 😃Feeding Friday😃 What better way to share my love for food and feeding babies than to go over what is required to feed successfully, and what feeding milestones look like! Of course there are many factors to consider with each feeder: gestational/chronological age, anatomical differences, neurological differences, feeding vessels, caregivers comfort… As a feeding therapist, one of the most important things I have learned over the years is to meet the caregivers where they are with feeding and to remind them and myself that this is a process! Over the next weeks I will be sharing more about this! 🍼 1: Fill the kettle with at least 1 litre of fresh tap water (do not use water that has been boiled before). 🍼 2: Boil the water to at least 70C. 🍼 3: Clean and disinfect the surface you are going to use. 🍼 4: Wash your hands. 🍼 5: If you are using a cold-water steriliser, shake off any excess solution from the bottle and the teat, or rinse them with cooled boiled water from the kettle (NEVER use water direct from the tap). 🍼 6: Stand the bottle on the cleaned, disinfected surface. 🍼 7: Pour the amount of water you need into the bottle first, double check that the water level is correct. 🍼 8: Loosely fill the scoop with formula powder then level it using either the flat edge of a clean, dry knife or the leveller provided in the tin. 🍼 9: Holding the edge of the teat, put it into the retaining ring, check it is secure, then screw the ring tightly onto the bottle. Make sure the ring is attached firmly. 🍼 10: Cover the teat with the cap and shake the bottle until the powder is dissolved. 🍼 11: It's important to cool the formula so it's not too hot to drink. 🍼 12: Test the temperature of the formula on the inside of your wrist before giving it to your baby. It should be body temperature, which means it should feel warm or cool, but not hot. 🍼 13: If there is any made-up formula left in the bottle after a feed, throw it away and make the formula as you need it. #FeedingFriday #askamidwife #neveralone #withyoueverystepoftheway #pregnancy #NHS #pregnancyadvice #NHS #LMNShumberandnorthyorkshire #PregnancyJourney #antenatal #labourandbirth #postnatal #newborn

The safest way to prepare a bottle of formula is to always follow the NHS advice, which recommends using a kettle to heat the water: https://www.nhs.uk/.../bottle.../making-up-baby-formula/ If you use a formula preparation machine, the Food Standards Agency (who funded the research) recommends: 1. Test the temperature of the water dispensed using a food thermometer. [Do not use this water to make a feed as the thermometer could contaminate the water] 2. If the temperature is below 70C, report this to your manufacturer AND either your Local Trading Standards or Citizens Advice. In addition, the study team recommend that if your machine is producing water below 70C, you do not use it to prepare feeds. You can read the full research report here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/mcn.13567 #askamidwife #neveralone #withyoueverystepoftheway #pregnancy #NHS #pregnancyadvice #NHS #LMNShumberandnorthyorkshire #PregnancyJourney #antenatal #labourandbirth #postnatal #newborn

AD. Yep, I’m still feeding my pots on a Friday! You didn’t think I’d stopped did you? My thoughts on it are that we may not have frosts here until the middle of November and so I want to make sure I get another six weeks of bloom, I mean, who wouldn’t?! So out come my cans, and the dahlia, cobaea, cosmos and anything else that looks like it needs feeding gets a splosh of breakfast before I do. I’ll put my usual link into stories for my fave liquid feed @natural_grower in case you need a last top up on supplies. And don’t forget to use my discount code which offers 15% off. Add MYREALG15 on their website. Full disclosure, I’m an ambassador for this brilliant organic, vegan, women led brand (but I do buy their products too I promise and WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend them!) Right, I’m better finish all this off before I’m late for work, but my usual question is this - WHO’S WITH ME?! Have a very happy Friday won’t you! HURRAY! We made it to the weekend!!! 🙌💚💜🧡 . . . #feedingfriday #scaringtheneighbours #keepingitreal #myrealgarden #gardenjobs #plantfoods #helpplantsgrow #fridayvibes #myhappyplace #gardenista #mygardenthismonth #lovetogarden #inmygardentoday #gardenersworld #inmygardentoday #gardenlife #mygardentoday #greenthumb #gardeningismytherapy #gardenersworld #gardenersofinstagram #lovetogarden #plantsmakemehappy #containergardening

Plant native plants in your yard. You have seen this phrase before. But why? Native plants attract bugs that are natural to this area. These bugs are eaten by birds in this area. It is the great circle of life. Here is an interesting fact. 96% of songbirds rely on feeding invertebrates to their young. Birds need bugs to support their babies. Here is one example. A pair of chickadees need 7500 bugs to raise one clutch of young. Another fact for you. In areas where 70% or more of the plants were native within 164 ft of the nest, chickadees thrived and the parents were able to raise enough young each year to sustain or grow the population. In areas where less than 70% of the plants were native, the parents weren’t able to raise enough young to sustain the population. The researchers attributed this finding to the decline of preferred prey (caterpillars). Plant natives, avoid pesticides, and Save the Songbirds.
