The Gulf Fritillary or Passion Butterfly on Mexican Flame Vine🧡 Host plant: (which is the only plant a butterfly will lay eggs on and the caterpillar will then eat) is of the Passion Vine family from the genus Passiflora (pictured in last slide) Some of their favorite nectar plants are Lantana, Zinnia, Aster, Thistle, Verbena, and others. (Nectar plants are flowers that a butterfly will drink/eat from) Life Span: The average duration of the egg stage in the life cycle for gulf fritillaries is roughly between three and five days. Eggs are usually found on the upper surfaces of the leaves of the host plant, but some can be found on the underside of leaves as well. Despite being covered in spikes, gulf fritillary are not a stinging caterpillar, they cannot sting you. The spikes are soft to the touch and serve the purpose of scaring predators. The average duration of the caterpillar stage is between 11 and 16 days. The average duration of the pupal stage/Chysallis in gulf fritillaries is roughly between 7 and 12 days. The average duration of the adult stage can be anywhere from 2-6 weeks. Gulf fritillaries have a chemical defense mechanism in which they release odorous chemicals in response to predator sightings. Florida is a major component of the geographic range of this butterfly, but it can be found throughout the Southern United States. Yesterday's "What is it Wednesday" was a tough one. These small pink flowers belong to Salvia coccinea, Tropical Sage! It also goes by Texas Sage, Scarlet Sage, and a few other names. This plant is a Florida Native that can explode with color in the landscape. It is easy to grow and reseeds itself readily. This means it will always be around, but could spread to other areas of the yard if allowed. It is available in Red, Pink and White flowers. If grown together, eventually offspring will become only pink and red - then eventually only red. Did you have a hard time figuring out what plant this was? So far this season we have seen AT LEAST all of these beauties IN OUR BACKYARD in Martin Co. Florida.
