That's why I've been thinking about a portable sensory room for young NFL fans who experience sensory overload in loud game environments. While some NFL teams have already built sensory rooms for fans with ASD, I think a portable solution could be a game-changer for those who want to attend games and enjoy the excitement, but need a safe space to retreat to when things get overwhelming. I want to emphasize that this is just a concept idea for now. It's not a real product yet, but I wanted to share my vision with you all and get your thoughts. As a designer, I'm always looking for ways to use my skills to make a positive impact, and I think this could be a great opportunity to do just that. With Autism Becoming So Prevalent In Our Community! We’d like to share some statistics with our followers. Rise in autism prevalence: The rate of autism continues to surge from 0.65% in 2000 to 2.8% in 2020, stressing the need for increased awareness and support (as reported by the CDC in March 2023*). The gender gap continues: Boys are 3.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls. Shift in demographics: For the first time, reported rates of autism are now lower among white children compared to other racial groups, such as blacks and Hispanics. Stark regional differences: Florida leads with the highest autism prevalence at 4.8%, while Texas reports the lowest at just 1.4% Communication barriers: About 25-30% of autistic children are non-speaking or minimally verbal, spotlighting the importance of innovative therapies and strategies. Disturbing safety concerns: Autistic individuals face a 28% risk of death from accidental injury, compared to just 6.5% in the general population. Complex health challenges: An overwhelming 95% prevalence of co-occurring conditions in autism, including intellectual disabilities, epilepsy, sleep disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, anxiety, depression, and ADHD, complicates care and treatment. Gabe told me something that blew my mind… While he met with his RPM instructor last week I got to sit in and watch how it’s done. First she asked Gabe if he wanted to learn about the lesson she had prepared for him about coral or if he wanted to chat about something else. She gave him these options to circle on a piece of paper first. He indicated he wanted to chat about something else. So she took out the letter board that he uses to spell out his answers and thoughts. We had 5 minutes left and Gabe took his time. I couldn’t believe what he told me! He spelled: MOM FIND NEXT MUSIC At first I took that to mean he is bored by the playlist we listen to in the car. I think he means he wants us to take him to another show! The last concert we took him to was in August when we saw @brandicarlile and @indigogirlsmusic at Merriweather Post Pavilion! We had the best time! I’ve been only working with Gabe for a short time. However, in this short time I’ve watched some of his interest change being a teenager. Just like many of my other clients, and all teenagers in general. It’s funny how I teach my growing adults to be flexible, when I’m the one that needs to be flexible too! Today, I would like to share five helpful strategies that I use to help communicate and connect with those diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum that struggle with communication. These strategies can be used with both verbal, minimally verbal and nonverbal children and can be used anytime, whether you are at the dinner table or out in the community. 1. Enter into their world by using motivating people, items, etc. to encourage communication. 2. Label feelings as they occur. 3. Assume competence. 4. Many children with autism struggle with executive function.Executive function is a set of Skills we use in our every day life to learn and manage daily task. Include walking memory, flexible thinking and self control. They may have trouble with certain skills like planning, staying organized, sequencing information, and self-regulating emotions. Some people pay attention to minor details, but have trouble seeing how these details fit into a bigger picture. Now the question is how can we assess walk in memory? And what accommodation should be made for someone who struggles with it. How can parents help support their children with their Executive Function Skills? 1)Use visual supports to teach organization. 2)Break down tasks into smaller parts. 3)Have clear spaces where things go. 4)Don’t always jump in to help them do everything. 5)Set aside lots of time and lots of patience. 🎵🥁🎧🎹🪘Did You Know? “The benefits of music therapy will depend on the individual child’s goals and abilities. I use music therapy with the children that I see in my clinics to achieve five main goals: 1. Regulate Behavior - Music can be used to regulate the body and bring a child out of fight-or-flight response. It allows children to relax and enjoy their surroundings. 2. Regulate Emotions - Many children on the spectrum have difficulties expressing their emotions. By exposing children to music that makes them feel a range of emotions, music therapists can increase their emotional dialogue and help them better understand their emotions. 3. Communicate - Many children with autism can sing or read a script, but have difficulty holding a conversation. A music therapist can take musical notes and songs and use them to communicate needs and wants. For example, to teach a child how to say “I need a break,” a therapist could put those words to a song in a musical pattern. Once the child learns the melody, he/she might hum the tune to let the teacher know that a break is needed. The therapist may be able to slowly take away the tune until the child is saying simple phrases to express needs and wants. 4. Reinforce Skills Learned Elsewhere - Children are able to learn when their body is able to get out of a stressed state. The mind can focus on acquiring skills instead of fear or stress. 5. Foster Social Interactions - Music therapy group sessions can provide an interactive musical experience where children work on social skills. For example, during a music therapy session the therapist may use one “special instrument.” Each member of the group is asked to play the “special instrument” and then pass it to the next child when the music stops.
