For so long I held so much shame and secrecy about my own time in mental health units, especially as psych wards often scare people. People like to focus on the Halloween images of straitjackets and 'loony bin' psychopaths. They prefer to brush over all the mums, teachers, doctors, lawyers, and businessmen on the wards because that would make them realise just how possible it was for them to one day need intense wraparound support. I didn't set my novel 'Hannah & Huia' on a mental health unit to try and intrigue readers. It's set on one to help show people that no one is immune to mental health struggles and that there's no shame in getting help. This beautiful review and gorgeous picture of ‘Hannah & Huia’ (as well as an impressive row of incredible NZ titles) has brought so much joy into my day. When you write and publish a book you always hope that readers will enjoy it, but it’s such an incredible feeling to know for certain that someone has picked up your novel and thoroughly loved it. A huge thanks to @mybookcase2023 for this lovely post: Hannah is in a mental health unit, in shock and speechless, following the sudden death of her husband and baby son. Here she meets Huia, another resident. While reading this I felt as if I was in Hannah’s head and fell in love with the beautiful Huia, wondering what was going on in hers. A really thought provoking book with mental health issues at the heart of it. At times heartbreaking and at other times I had a smile. The last sentence of the author’s (Charlotte Lobb) acknowledgments is “And finally to all my readers (these words always make me feel special) the best kind of stories are those that can be shared with others.” Well I have no qualms in sharing how good Hannah and Huia is and I highly recommend it. Every word matters—both in our writing and in life in general. It's heard less these days, but I was brought up with the saying: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me." But words do hurt. Words and name-calling can do just as much damage as violence can. I've been labelled a lot of things in life, many of them damaging. There are obviously the factual labels such as mum, wife, author, speech-therapist, daughter. But then there are the hurtful ones like "goody two shoes", "four eyes", "teacher's pet", "try-hard", "mental patient", "psych ward loony", "loser", "geek", "loner", "weirdo"... I'm sure we've all had them—labels that hurt. Words that echo in our head over and over, convincing us that they must be true. But they're not! Not the negative labels anyway. Words matter more than we realise. So make each word count...in your writing, in life, in every possible way. Words are no different than stones. Every time someone asks me what 'Hannah & Huia' is about, I always get tongue-tied. Yet my son had a friend over to play and was excitedly telling him all about my book (despite being far too young to read it). So, for those who might ask, this is my son's take on it: "There are two women - Hannah and Huia - and they become friends, but not a normal kind of friends. Huia talks in funny three-word sentences like 'caramel, fork, chimpanzee', but none of the doctors or nurses know why."
