The Church (1989) ☠️☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Michele Soavi A fantastic gothic horror. Underrated in my opinion. Visual styling galore. Outstanding haunting lighting and camera work. The score perfectly matches the demonic atmosphere, credit to Philip Glass and Keith Emerson. Co-written and produced by Dario Argento. The evil supernatural elements run deep in this one. Great gory moments and practical effects. The actual Church itself is shot in such a terrifically menacing way that it becomes quite a character in itself. Love the incredible labyrinth that is the deep depths of the Church. Sadly a lot of these great Italian horror movies suffer from poor dubbing and ‘La Chiesa’ is no exception. No real character development. The film does struggle with pacing at times, most notably towards the final 1/3. April Fool’s Day (1986) ☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Fred Walton Definitely more of a tame entry to the 80’s slasher genre. Not terribly gory Biff! The film is paced really well, entertaining and has its share of twists, even if it was pretty predictable. The Man Who Could Cheat Death (1959) ☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Terence Fisher Cool concept. Great acting from all. Very well written. Pacing is good, but there are times that are a bit slowed down with long winded dialogue. Somewhat weak horror execution, though still has its chilling moments. Fishers Hammer color palette, fog (ha!) and atmosphere is all present. I’m always going to be down for a Mad Scientist flick. Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Jack Arnold Released on this date 70 years ago. I absolutely adore this film and have loved it ever since the very first time I saw it when I was maybe 6 years old, solidifying my love for horror movies. My most favorite monster design of all time. Milicent Patrick created the design of the Creature, although Bud Westmore would ultimately take credit for the Creature’s design. Originally produced and released in 3-D. Two men played The Creature, Ricou Browning (underwater scenes) and Ben Chapman (above water scenes) it’s said, they never met during the making of the film. Much of the acting is a bit mediocre. I’ve seen this movie countless times in my life and am always amazed by how much fun it is and how well it holds up. Fascinating and eerie. The beautifully shot B&W comes through incredibly in this latest 4k release. Because so much of the plot takes place underwater, the film has to rely heavily upon its, a bit repetitive, yet entrancing score. Thanksgiving (2023) ☠️☠️☠️🦴 Directed by Eli Roth Loosely following up the fake movie trailer, co-written & directed by Eli Roth and Jeff Rendell of the same name for 2007’s double feature ‘Grindhouse’. The third film from the ‘07 ‘Grindhouse’ fake trailers to be adapted into full length features, first being ‘Machete’ (2010) and the second, ‘Hobo With A Shotgun’ (2011). Pays homage to the golden age of the Slasher film, the 70’s & 80’s while using modern filmmaking techniques. Lots of creative kills. Arguably Roth’s best movie to date. Some pretty hilarious comedic moments. Plot points struggle to flow together nicely. Huge missed opportunity for a clever ending. Godzilla Minus One (2023) ☠️☠️☠️☠️🦴 Directed by Takashi Yamazaki This movie made me so happy. As someone who is continuously let down by Hollywood’s attempts to make even just a good Godzilla film… WOW! this… was… incredible! A masterpiece version a the half monster, half God of destruction! Fantastic sound work and the original Godzilla roar 👌 Liked how it remained close to themes of the original (1954) version, particularly in the Ginza attack. Also noticed many subtle influences from another favorite Godzilla film of mine, ‘Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack’ (2001). Yamazaki absolutely nailed the look of Godzilla in this film, love his more upright aesthetic. NegaGoji 🙌 “Minus One” is in reference to Japan being devastated by WW ll and brought down to zero, the disastrous destruction Godzilla delivered soon after the war, brought Japan to -1 . The only real negative things I can think to mention, is that I would have loved Godzilla to have more screen time and that the plan B part to kill Godzilla seemed a bit silly. Sleepy Hollow (1999) ☠️☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Tim Burton Released on this date in 1999 I think of all Tim Burtons movies, this is the one that I would have most enjoyed visiting the set of. Vast, elaborately detailed, beautifully dark gothic sets. Atmosphere clearly inspired by the likes of Mario Bava as well as Hammer Horror films. Though not his best film over all… visually, this may very well be Burton’s best work. Manages to pay some well placed tributes to the Disney’ 1949 ‘The Legends of Sleepy Hallow’. Danny Elfman delivers yet another stunning score as usual, what a superb talent. Loaded with legendary actors. Witches conjuring up a violent murderous ghostly demon. The combination of Christopher Walken and Ray Park as the Headless Horseman is brilliant. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) ☠️☠️☠️☠️🦴 Directed by Francis Ford Coppola Released on this date 31 years ago. I’ve seen this film more time than I can count and it’s never gotten old to me. At it’s roots, a compelling and dynamic love story. Rich score. Beautiful violence. Visually stunning and has held up beautifully even in today’s standards. Nearly all special effects are done practically and in-camera. Won 3 Oscars in, Best Costume Design, Best Effects & Sound Editing and Best Makeup. I’ve always been obsessed with the aesthetic of all the character iterations that Dracula would shape into throughout the film. Inspiring filmmaking. Gary Oldman is arguably the greatest Dracula of all time and it’s easy to see why after watching his performance here. Keanu on the other hand, not so much… I’ve never really cared for his performance in this film and maybe it’s just more on the casting of Keanu Reeves in this roll that doesn’t work. All Hallows’ Eve (2013) ☠️☠️🦴 Directed by Damien Leone Art makes his full feature debut in this Anthology. Story one: dark and disturbing. Story two: 🤣 😂 😆 …oh man it’s so corny and bad, I can’t help but like it though. 🤷♂️ Story three: terrifying, immensely gory and clearly the official launch of slasher icon ‘Art the Clown’. All three stories are completed by a decent little wrap around story that brings everything home. The first and third stories of this anthology are actually old short films made by Damien Leone, years earlier and put on YouTube... the first one is ‘The 9th Circle’ (2008) and the third is ‘Terrifier’ (2011). I’m addition to his directing credit, Mr Leone also has writing, editing as well as delivering some superb practical special effects gore and makeup work to add to his credentials. This film is far from polished and quite clunky at times, yet still manages to be solid horror entertainment. Halloween ll (1981) ☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Rick Rosenthal Kicks off immediately where the original leaves us. Poor Laurie Strode, she gets no time to catch her breath. While much more gory than its predecessor, unfortunately it’s just nowhere near as frightening. We momentarily see Michael without his mask here. As sequels go, it’s quite good. Pack full Halloween holiday nostalgia. An oddly and rather not believable deserted hospital is in large, our setting for this one. I believe this is the last time Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence were in a ‘Halloween’ movie together. House on Haunted Hill (1959) ☠️☠️☠️🦴 Directed by William Castle This pictures a fun haunt the whole family can enjoy. Classic camp. At 75 mins, this film is run time perfection. Low-budget masterpiece. Is this Vincent Price’s best role? …no, far from it, but he does absolutely deliver everything this filmgreat. It’s funny to read about how much this movie terrified people in theaters back in the day. It’s hokey by today’s standards, but for me that only adds to the films charm. The $10,000 offered to each guest to stay in the house, in 1959, would be equate to roughly $105,000 today. The house used for the exterior shots was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (built in 1924) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The story of Gordy is more terrifying than the alien story. Gordy’s story is based on an actual tragic event. Can someone please tell me, what’s going on with that oddly positioned shoe in the Gordy scene? Beautifully shot, can’t say enough about how good this film looks. It’s my understanding that this is the first horror film to be shot with IMAX cameras. Fantastically acted. The story is interesting, yet still never really grabbed me like I was expecting it to do. I respect the design and concept of the alien, but didn’t love it either. I do love the correlation of humanities failed attempt to tame a wild animal for an entertaining spectacle and then in a sense, do the same with the Alien/Monster. Was so hyped to see Keith David. Halloween lll: Season of the Witch (1982) ☠️☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace Released on this date 41 years ago. I watch this one nearly every October. Was not well received upon its release… sadly, I believe that’s largely due to it foregoing the Michael Myers character and telling an original story all its own. The absence of Michael and it’s wildly original take, is partly what makes this film so charming to me. Hugely underrated… sure, it does have its flaws, huge plot holes, etc… though thankfully this one manages to maintain an ever growing cult following. I’ve always held ‘SOTW’ in a separate space than all the rest of the ‘Halloween’ movies. Jamie Lee Curtis provides the voice over the intercom, informing Santa Mira residents of the 6pm curfew. One of my all time favorite opening title sequence, visually and musically. Incredible John Carpenter score. Love a Tom Atkins performance. The cartoon playing on tv in the bar is ‘The Cigarette and the Weed’ (1981), directed by Ralph Bakshi. John Carpenter never wanted Michael Myers in each movie, only the first. ‘Halloween III’ was his attempt to get his original idea for an anthology series off the ground again. The days and dates portrayed in the movie are chronologically accurate to 1982. Always loved the Don Post masks from this flick. Haunt (2019) ☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods A very solid selection for anyone’s October horror flick viewing list. Really thought the haunt attraction portion of this film was a lot of fun. Good Halloween slasher. The best part of the movie is the design, aesthetic and interactions with it’s antagonists. The Clown. The Witch. The Devil. The Zombie. The Ghost. Has plot holes. For f***s sakes would you please hold on to your weapon when you find one. 😂 Didn’t love the ending, but it was ok enough. All in all it’s pretty well done and delivers some tension & dread. Gore isn’t the best here. Kill, Baby… Kill! (1966) ☠️☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Mario Bava This Italian horror gem premiered in the US on this date in 1967. Drenched in eerie gothic 19th century atmosphere. Bava always delivers the chillers. A bit of a repurposed score here from ‘Blood and Black Lace’ (another Bava gem) but no matter, as there was very little budget on this film and the score is very effective. Gorgeous shot after gorgeous shot, just loaded with clever camera work. Read that the script was written in just one sitting and is under 30 pages. It’s tricky to gauge at times with the poor English dubbing, but there’s good acting here. Mario Bava and the cast agreed to finish the film without pay, as the entire budget is said to had run out just after two weeks of shooting. A film that has certainly inspired many modern era film directors. I’ve lost count of how many times this films been remade and not a single attempt gets anywhere near the original’s intense authentic terror. It’s impressive how violent, grisly and gory this film feels and yet there is very little blood on screen. Fascinating sound design. All the prop art created for the house set was entirely made using real animal bone and carcass’. Other actors of the film didn't actually get to see Gunnar Hansen in his Leatherface costume, before their first (which is also usually their last) scene with him to heighten their fear response. It’s not often that sequels are this good. Peter Cushing is always phenomenal, but this is the best I’ve seen him. I’ve been watching Terence Fisher’s (Hammer Horror) films in the order they’re produced and will continue to do so and post em here. Wishmaster (1997) ☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Robert Kurtzman Released on this date in 1997 and loaded with a who’s who on the cast and crew of horror film legends. Kurtzman, Nicotero and the KNB FX group just knocking out insanely creative practical FX for this film. A blast for gore hounds. Classic garbage late 90’s CGI. Kane Hodder has one of the goofiest on screen kills I’d ever seen… that good ol CGI. 😂 Well delivered film adaptation of the Djinn folklore. Acting is a bit poor at times, all be it bad dialogue. The Return of the Vampire (1943) ☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Lew Landers A well done gothic horror in the style of Universal Studios during the era. I read that, Columbia Pictures originally intended this film to be a direct sequel to Dracula (1931), but when Universal threatened a plagiarism suit, Columbia made the film anyway, while just changing the name of Bela Lugosi’s character to (Armand Tesla) to avoid any connection with the "Dracula" name. A Werewolf takes over as the “Renfield” type character. A well paced 69 minute runtime. Battle of wits. I enjoyed this take on the Vampire story. Love the dark shadow expressionist camera work. Misty, foggy, gothic set pieces that are fantastic to look at. Lugosi continues to flex his power and immortality. Has to be Bela Lugosi’s most underrated performance. Unfortunately this was the last time Mr. Lugosi would receive top billing for a major Hollywood studio picture. Solid re-watchability. Baskin (2015) ☠️☠️☠️ Directed by Can Evrenol Turkish horror. This film’s strength, is it’s atmosphere. Delivers pure horror in the final third. Grisly gore and violence. Gross sound design. Good sound track. We take a nightmare journey right through the back door of Hell. Much is left to interpretation, though possibly to a fault here. Not sure if it’s intentional, but the protagonist are set up to be not likable. I can see some Clive Barker inspired moments, as well as a desire to achieve an Argento like color palette. Mehmet Cerrahoglu plays, ’Baba’ (hired for his rare skin condition) his portrayal of this character is true wickedness and creepy as hell. Those with weak stomachs are likely not to make it though this one. Not exactly sure what this film set out to accomplish, but it seemed likely too ambitious for its given budget. Mortuary (1983) ☠️☠️🦴 Directed by Howard Avedis Originally purchased by Paramount Pictures who gave the film a premiere test run in Tucson, Arizona in 1982, after the film performed poorly at the premiere, it was sold to Ventures International and released on this date in 1983. I really wanted to like this one more, but it’s pretty meh overall. Acting isn’t terrible. It does have its moments and is certainly watchable. Some ok atmosphere from time to time. The late great Bill Paxton really brings it here, as we know he always did and is a must see for his fans. As slasher films go, it’s pretty weak. All the kill scenes are crappy. One of those classic (especially with 80’s horror), poster art is better than the actual film. Infinity Pool (2023) ☠️☠️ Directed by Brandon Cronenberg Another bad psychedelic trip for ya, this time we smoke on some formaldehyde dipped peyote 🫨 Seriously though, this films a mess. Really wish I’d of watched the unrated version, though doubtful it improves my overall outlook of the film. Some beautiful shots and mesmerizing camera work, which it seems to lean too heavily on. The Burning (1981) ☠️☠️☠️🦴 Directed by Tony Maylam Caught this gem in the theater last night, shout out to @majesticphx One of the top all time slasher flicks, especially of the 80’s summer camp variety. Apparently written before ‘Friday the 13th’, though released afterwards. Gore galore and superbly executed by none other than the FX master himself, Mr. Tom Savini. There are some great kills. Savini turned down working on ‘Friday the 13th Part 2’ to do the FX and makeup work on ‘The Burning’ instead. This film was one of the first movies to land on the UK's infamous ‘Video Nasties’ list. Well acted and the characters are decently developed. It’s a bit too long in parts, almost stretched. The climax of the film (mostly set in a real abandoned copper mine), though not terrible, is unfortunately rather weak in my opinion. Jason Alexander & Holly Hunter’s acting/film debuts. The original stared Steve McQueen and was released in 1958, 30 years prior. This movie is an absolute blast from start to finish and never gets old. All the death scenes are super entertaining. Has a some of my favorite creature/practical effects work. A large amount of the blob’s slime was made out of methocel, which is both incredibly slippery and a thickening ingredient for milkshakes. A couple of very cool motorcycle stunt scenes. @choptopmoseley makes a great low-key appearance, so good. All the acting is solid. It’s my understanding that this film is not considered canon to the much more popular T.V. show. Apparently Joss Whedon was so irritated with how much of his vision was being mishandled and re-written, he left the set during production and did not return. A Cat in the Brain (1990) ☠️☠️🦴 Directed by Lucio Fulci Fulci playing Fulci, directing Fulci, written by Fulci. Feels more like a clip show loaded with a ton of excellent gore more than anything else. Eyeball gauging, beheading, all types of dismemberment, brutal stabbing, maggot covered rotten corpses, etc, etc… Toss in a few laughs. A little confusing and disorienting. Definitely feels like a little window into someone’s nightmare… Fulci’s nightmare? This was in the last few years of his life, so it’s tough to speculate what he might of been going through at the time. Paganini Horror (1989) ☠️☠️ Directed by Luigi Cozzi I’m a sucker for 80s Italian horror and this one roped me in with its rad cover art. It’s not good. I would of given it just ☠️ (my lowest rating yet) but it’s honestly somewhat entertaining it’s so bad. It finds itself existing in the unintentional comedy space, due to the acting being so terrible. The same could honestly be said for the plot execution. It really try’s to deliver a cool supernatural horror story, but sadly fails. I feel Cozzi is desperately trying to emulate an almost Argento/Suspiria type atmosphere but gets nowhere close. A couple decent gore moments. Looks like Daria Nicolodi has a writing credit for this one which is pretty cool. A dubbed over Donald Pleasence. Mostly chick rocker band, making terrible 80s ballad garbage. All said, I ended up having fun and even kinda enjoyed watching it, all be it for the wrong reasons. One of my absolute all time favorite films and is definitely my favorite John Carpenter flick. First saw this when I was in 6th grade and was completely blown away by Rob Bottin’s creature design and SFX, still enamored with his work in this movie all these years later. A masterclass in atmosphere. ‘The Thing’ has aged incredibly well and I still find little new details to enjoy about it all these years later, even after countless viewings. Wildly grotesquely gruesome. Drenched in darkness and paranoia. The subtle Ennio Morricone score. MacReady’s hat. Read that, Kurt Russell took a drag on a cigarette at the beginning of certain shots in order to make the breath appear more visible.
