EVEN THOSE WHO LOVED HIM WERE NOT SAFE! @the_bloody_asylum SPOILER-FREE REVIEW OF A @hammer_films CLASSIC Following on from SHE, my first experience of a Hammer film as a 5-year-old, CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF would just a couple of years later be my first horror movie proper. And WOW! What a massive impression it made on my young self. Images and scenes etched into the memory for over 50 years. My passion for edgy, humanistic, character-centric horror can probably be traced back to one of Hammer’s definitive films. The cornerstone of my lifelong love of their movies. Released in May 1961, it is widely considered one of Hammer's very best. Over 60 years later it still holds up as one of the all-time great movies from the golden age of classic horror. It is among one of Hammer's most emotionally involved due in no small part to Oliver Reed in his first lead role. Fisher and Hinds were quite obviously aware a slow-burn narrative was essential to underscore the human aspect. Reed was instrumental in this. For this is a film that stands or falls on Reed. And he more than delivered. When Reed was asked in a 1984 interview what movie he would be remembered for he singled out CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF because he felt it was one of his best. He was no doubt helped by being in the company of one of the best ensemble casts to ever appear in a classic British horror. The cast aided immensely by Hammer's always stellar craftsmanship behind the camera. Revisiting yet again memories as ever came flooding back of first experiencing with my grandparents one of my favourite Hammer movies and among those that stands at the pinnacle of British horror. Just finished watching @snowhollowfilm written, directed, and starring @jimmycthatsme Gotta say, a nice, well shot movie. Like the little twist ending, very well acted by everyone in the cast. The wolf looked great, they didn't show too much of it, which is good considering the ending. It didn't have a lot of gore in it, probably down to budget. One of my favorite werewolf movies is Ginger Snaps. I saw it when I was a teenager and it stayed with me until now and I rewatch it every couple of years. And love it all over again. Also it started my longtime crush on scream queen Katharine Isabelle. I also own the Scream Factory poster. Blackout (2023/24) As far as my werewolf film knowledge goes, I haven’t seen one like Blackout. There’s a heck of a lot of depth within its story. Story is what it’s all about. And I loved that. The story is a STORY, and it’s told in a sort of slice of life way within an alcoholic’s search for redemption from lycanthropy but more importantly, who he is / was / wants to be / will never be. The horror bits bit when it’s time for them, but damn, is this a good story. Also, bipedal, more man than wolf werewolves give me the heeby jeebies. And this one was straight out of my nightmares as a kid. AMERICAN WEREWOLF (An American Werewolf in London; 1981) Zwei amerikanische Studenten durchtrampen auf ihren Europatrip das englische Hochmoor. Müde und durchfroren erreichen sie einen kleinen Pub, wo man sie eindringlich vor einer Bestie warnt, die hier ihr Unwesen treiben soll. Unerschrocken setzen die beiden ihren Weg durch die regnerische Nacht fort, verirren sich im Moor - und werden prompt von einem Werewolf angefallen. Jack stirbt, David kommt schwerverletzt ins Krankenhaus. Trotz fürsorglicher Pflege quälen ihn Nacht für Nacht grauenhafte Alpträume, in denen ihm sein toter Freund erscheint und ankündigt, er selbst würde beim nächsten Vollmond zum menschenmordenden Werewolf. Die Nacht des nächsten Vollmonds steht kurz bevor und damit sieht alles anders aus - blutiger... Was kann man noch viel schreiben zu diesem Klassiker des Werwolf-Genres, den ich mit The Howling (ebenfalls 1981) und The Wolfman (1941) zu den Top 3 des Genres zähle? Die Handlung ist gut, Kulissen, Schauspieler und Musik passen und die Maske/Spezialeffekte/Werwolfverwandlung ist sowieso das Highlight des Films - es gab den Oscar hierfür nicht umsonst. Ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Films ist auch der schwarze Humor, der nicht übertrieben, sondern genau richtig dosiert eingebracht wird. Wer auf Werwolf-Filme steht, kommt somit gar nicht an AMERICAN WEREWOLF vorbei. Das Mediabook ist übrigens sehr empfehlenswert, da man wirklich interessante Hintergrund-Infos zur Entstehung des Films - z. Tonight’s movie is Wolf Hollow. Haven’t heard of this before, but the trailer looked decent and this might just be a low budget gem. I love werewolf movies, but they’re just so hard to get right, even with a budget sufficient enough to do the creatures justice. Hopefully this overcomes the budget hurdles to be deliver some lycanthropic chills! ***EDIT*** This is not a good movie. Battledogs. A wildlife photographer is bitten by a wolf on one of her travels. Passing through the airport, she falls violently ill and turns into a werewolf, killing and infecting several other unsuspecting travellers. The army immediately shuts down the airport and quarantines everyone involved. A good guy army major takes a liking to the infected photographer/patient zero and tries to help her by finding a cure together with a CDC doctor lady. Soon, it becomes evident that certain factions within the military are looking to weaponize this novel werewolf virus to create feral super soldiers to use in combat scenarios all over the world. A desperate fight to find a cure as well as stop the bad army guys begin. This is a neat little Asylum schlockbuster with a surprisingly good cast. Cutie Ariana Richards (of Jurassic Park fame) comes out of retirement to join actors like Dennis Haysbert, Craig Scheffer, Kate Vernon, Ernie Hudson, Bill Duke and Wes Studi. It’s weird seeing such competent actors slumming it like this but they give it their all and it actually saves the picture. The effects are terrible as expected (the budget obviously went towards hiring the impressive cast) but it’s shot fairly well and moves at a nice pace. PS 2 graphics werewolf CGI or not. Ariana Richards seems to have dipped back out into obscurity which is a shame. I would’ve liked to see her do more things as she’s not a bad actress. Oh well… for what this is it’s pretty dang watchable.
