Ivan the Terrible, Part One (Sergei Eisenstein, 1944). It's been many years since I've seen this. These photos I found online make me want to see it again. Ivan the Terrible comes in two parts though the second part was condemned by Stalin and not released until after his death. The film tells the story of the great monarch who unified Russia under his rule ("terrible" is how Ivan is remembered in the west, but the Russian word means something more like formidable or awe-inspiring). The photography is sensational as is the montage (Eisenstein practically invented editing as an artistic practice with the Odessa Steps sequence in Battleship Potemkin, 1925). And the story is a sweeping but nuanced and insightful one of power and power corrupted. As a young man, at a time when film was fighting to be recognized as art, Eisenstein was foundational to the understanding of film history. Uma pintura terrível, como Ivan, o Czar que matou o próprio filho. Ilya Repin pintou o olhar devastado do pai que, em um momento de fúria, golpeou a cabeça do filho com o cetro, jogado sobre o tapete, no primeiro plano. Um cenário cheio de sombras e vermelhos, um abraço com sangue e lágrima, um beijo com olhares, um que se apaga, outro que se arregala de remorso. Ivan Ivanovich, o filho, o sucessor, era um príncipe cruel, sem limites, vaidoso e agressivo, cuja impulsividade gerava constantes problemas políticos ao pai. O Czar era um homem severo, temido, terrível, mas amava o filho que matou, após matar o neto na barriga da mãe. A briga foi porque o pai, Velho ranzinza, implicou com a nora, com as roupas que ela estava vestindo, com a felicidade dela ou com qualquer pequeno detalhe fútil, uma bobagem de grávida mimada e a empurrou escada abaixo. Ela perdeu o bebê. O filho raivoso teve a audácia de enfrentar o pai. Bastou um golpe certeiro na cabeça, com o cetro que usava de bengala, pontudo como uma lança, arma sempre empunhada. O menino caiu tremendo, ferido de morte. O momento seguinte foi o escolhido por Ilya Repin para contar a história, 300 anos depois. Ainda hoje história mal contada, aliás. Em 1913 um sujeito atacou a pintura a facadas, gritando que era mentira pintada. Repin estava vivo e foi à Rússia restaurar os estragos. Em 2018, mais de um século depois, um outro pegou uma daquelas hastes de segurar fitas para isolar áreas e atacou ferozmente a tela, quebrou o vidro de proteção e rasgou o Ivan arregalado com o filho desfalecendo. Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan on 16 November 1581 is a painting by Russian realist artist Ilya Repin made between 1883 and 1885. It depicts the grief-stricken Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible cradling his dying son, the Tsarevich Ivan Ivanovich, shortly after the elder Ivan had dealt a fatal blow to his son’s head in a fit of anger. The painting portrays the anguish and remorse on the face of the elder Ivan and the gentleness of the dying Tsarevich, forgiving his father with his tears. Repin used Grigoriy Myasoyedov, his friend and fellow artist, as the model for Ivan the Terrible, and writer Vsevolod Garshin for the Tsarevich. In 1885, upon completion of the oil-on-canvas work, Repin sold it to Pavel Tretyakov for display in his Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. It has been called one of Russia’s most famous and controversial paintings, and is normally on display in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. The Tsarevich Ivan’s death had grave consequences for Russia, since it left no competent heir to the throne. After the Tsar’s death in 1584, his unprepared son Feodor I succeeded him with Boris Godunov as de facto ruler. Consigli in pillole dalla mia collezione: Il gabinetto delle figure di cera (Das Wachsfigurenkabinett). Di Paul Leni. Germania, 1924. Oggi torno a parlare di espressionismo tedesco, è passato un po' di tempo dall'ultima volta, e lo faccio con uno dei massimi esponenti di questa corrente cinematografica. Vi avverto, sarà un post con molti nomi, che vi invito ad approfondire ulteriormente. Il film è scritto da Henrik Galeen, che aveva già scritto altri due capolavori: Il Golem, di Wegener, e Nosferatu, di Murnau. Lo sceneggiatore si ispira anche ad altre due opere, prendendo l'ambientazione da fiera di paese de Il gabinetto del dottor Caligari, di Wiene, e la suddivisione della narrazione in capitoli di Destino, di Lang. Anche il cast è spaventoso. Troviamo Emil Jannings e Wilhelm Dieterle in due ruoli straordinari e abbiamo anche altre due leggende, Conrad Veidt e Wener Krauss, che sono oltre ogni immaginazione. I capitoli sarebbero dovuti essere quattro, uno per ogni statua, ma per problemi di budget alla fine saranno soltanto tre. In questo film la narrazione, per quanto i capitoli siano interessantissimi e ognuno con un'atmosfera diversa, è secondaria. Il gabinetto delle figure di cera è un film così importante grazie alla regia di Paul Leni. Il suo lavoro risulta essere così di impatto anche perché il regista era anche pittore e scenografo, elementi sui quali si basa l'espressionismo tedesco, e quindi ci si ritrova inevitabilmente davanti a uno spettacolo indimenticabile. La fantasia e la potenza delle inquadrature e degli ambienti in scena è incredibile ancora oggi, dopo cento anni. Un film che ha ispirato innumerevoli opere e che continua a ispirarle ancora oggi, da recuperare a ogni costo. La versione originale è andata perduta, ma è stato comunque possibile effettuare un restauro, che è quello presente nell'edizione in bluray in mio possesso. Paul Leni, come Murnau, lavorò anche negli Stati Uniti, e non fu per nulla contento di quell'esperienza, nonostante lì realizzò altri quattro film fondamentali, tra i quali L'uomo che ride, sempre con il leggendario e camaleontico Conrad Veidt, che ispirò poi il personaggio del Joker.
