Remembering the night before the operation, laid alone in the hospital bay with a million worries, the morning of the op pacing up and down the hospital corridor before they sedated me, feels like an age ago but in reality it’s been 7 weeks since my open heart surgery and what a journey so far. Some highs, some lows, balancing of meds and bloods, some tired days where I’ve needed to sleep and build my strength, and some days in my head I could walk for miles. Some new feelings with the mechanical heart valve doing it’s job, and the feeling of when it’s perhaps not, turns out to be normal. When the ‘tick’ misses a beat but turns out to be an extra beat and panic sets in. Truth is, it’s all new, and new can be scary! We make rash choices, predictions, make mistakes but what we’ve got to remember is we’ve been given a new opportunity to make the most of what’s in front of us. As long as we take small steps forward, it’s still forward! When you think your not progressing, recovery of the mind and body comes in all shapes and forms, you do what’s right for you! I could feel the full body weight of a nurse crushing my chest as she tucked in my bed sheets 🛌 ❤️ Leeds General Infirmary. Intensive care. Tubes. Beeping. Hushed tones. Faint groans from other patients. The steady rhythm of a ventilator. Darkness fades. Dry throat. Excruciating pain - intense yet far away. Ceiling spinning. Am I here? Muscles won't move. Body is dead weight yet alive with weirdness. "She's awake, give her more morphine"... Rustling. Light getting smaller. Darkness. I'd just had open heart surgery for a birth defect we'd known nothing about until I pulled a muscle and found myself 'in the system' for further investigation. Less than 24 hours before I'd been in a garden centre 400 miles north. My dad ordering carrot and coriander soup and a ham and cheese sandwich, my mum in search of a decent gluten free roll and any soup as long as it isn't carrot and coriander. An unexpected phone call, a search for a flight that afternoon, a dash to the airport, my husband leaving a work meeting and driving from Lincoln to Manchester airport to pick me up, pizza, pack hospital bag, drive to hospital. Waiting. Questions. Forms. Signatures. Waiting. Wheeled away. Small talk with anaesthetist. Then the feeling of shaking through my bones, wooziness... and back to the crushing weight of a nurse leaning on my chest. ⬇️ And here I am seven years later, bright as a button. I have been at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) today, on delivery suite. So much amazing feedback for the team @leedsmaternity, with all families saying that the midwives at Leeds are incredible! So kind, caring, friendly and supportive. One lady said that all she wanted to say, was a massive thank you to all the staff! A new phone system has recently been implemented at Leeds. If you call Maternity Assessment, you will now be placed in a queue and told where you are in that queue. You will not need to keep ringing, as per the old system. This will hopefully reduce your time of trying to get through, at busy periods. A big thank you to all the families that I spoke with today, your feedback is so helpful. Today we was back in clinic, since her transplant she’s had a bad cough that’s just been getting worse and worse, today when we went they could hear some crackles so they sent us for a chest X-ray just waiting for results they are gonna ring with them later on! THEN —> NOW ✨🤍🙏 6 Months Difference. i remember back then thinking that they would never come out of hospital ( i knew they would eventually) but the heartbreak i had every single day leaving them, the excitement i would have waking every day to visit them in hospital, but then the crippling heartache having to leave on a night. these are my first premature babies, ive never had to experience leaving the hospital without a baby before ( mum of six ) but here we are 6 months down the line and all that blury, chaotic river of emotions have slowly faded, i now have two healthy, smiling boys home both together. blessed beyond belief, a truly spiritual awakening. ✨ For any twin Mamas out there sat by a bedside with your heart in absolute shreds, just know that i have been where you are, it will get easier each day. concentrate on the positives and trust that god has a plan for you. One of my favourite photos from last year (and probably the worst) 🤣 I’d been living on about 2 hours sleep a day for a week and had driven 684 miles in 2 days 😴 I had the adventure of a life time in Scotland and walked Ben Nevis for my daughter. At my 20 week scan I found out she would be born with a major heart condition. At 13 weeks old she had open heart surgery and every year I do a hike to raise money for @childrensheartsurgeryfund. Today I’m walking the patch at LGI, on MAC and Antenatal ward. Lots of positive feedback from families using Leeds Maternity Services. Common themes that I hear from families a lot are: “The staff are wonderful.” “Nothing is too much” and “I feel so well cared for.” When asking families how they found getting through to MAC on the phone lines, it was mixed feedback. The Trust are aware that patients can often be ringing for a while, before the phone is answered and they will be introducing a new system soon, to improve this service. A few weeks ago, four boxes of long-lost genealogical research, old family photos, and original documents materialized in a kind stranger's home only a block from my house. Turns out my neighbour had inherited the collection from my late cousin and wanted to reunite it with the family. My baby girl is home and it's the end of Iris's Journey. 🖤 Unfortunately we had to experience every parents worst nightmare. We prayed for a miracle but due to the severity of her heart defect her heart was too big for this earth. She was such a warrior and I still don't think the reality that she has gone has set in. Ebsteins Anomaly you may have won this fight but there are so many other babies/children/adults fighting this and I just hope that one day more severe cases like Iris's can be fixed so no other parent has to go through this. Yesterday was Day 6. We had chest physio in the morning which included bouncing on a trampoline, blowing bubbles and throwing to make her want to cough and clear her throat. She moved to 0.5 litres of oxygen and was very feisty! And we had a trip.off the ward with an oxygen canister She was off oxygen around the ward a lot as she kept wanting to get out of bed and go to see the Grinch. I had a half hour put of the hospital in the afternoon and she was off oxygen for over an hour, sats remaining above 92 when she was re monitored. It all happened very quickly, but we are home! Discharged at around 5.30pm and she's full of beans. Day 5 Molly is struggling in the morning ls with her sats. Presumably, it's sitting on her chest from a night's asleep. To help her with this, the physiotherapists came to do chest physio with her to help her need to cough and clear her chest better by blowing bubbles with deep breaths first, blowing pom poms and tissue paper with straws and even jumping on a trampoline (still hooked up to oxygen) which seemed insane to me. It did have a positive impact on her as sats were much better middle to late afternoon. It's been a busy one, as we've had a visitor and also Leeds Rhinos popped in to give her some gifts which she was chuffed about as this included Grinch head boppers. She's loving the Grinch themed decor on the ward and the play therapist has been fab and gifted her a doctor's set and put a bubble and light machine in her room for a few hours. Still.cant get off the oxygen yet but she's eaten 1 and a bit meals today. So we are improving slowly but surely. She's wiped now. Day 4 of our all inclusive break away. Molly was rather perky yesterday morning and had a walk around the ward a few times. She even managed to smash my phone up, so I had to pop out briefly to get a new one. We even had a visit from Daddy and Bea. The play therapist was amazing and fitted a cannula to her fox so we can play nurses too. Molly was becoming rather feisty with her mask and refusing to keep it on, sats were good, so they moved to nasal prongs yesterday and reduced oxygen down again to 2.5 litres. A bad night of sleep however after a very busy day and today we've struggled with our sats a little. She's been coughing a lot and it sounds gross but it's moving the gunk out of her lungs so hopefully this will help her improve more. Mask needed at night and when asleep; oxygen back up to 5 while she sleeps this morning as sats were dropping below 90. McIntyre Update: We are home after our amazing, strong, beautiful baby Luna-Rose had major open heart surgery on Monday. Luna has taken it in her stride, recovering so well I can’t believe we are home within a week of her going under. I have to say this has been one of the worst weeks of our lives. I would like to thank everyone at home for their support, and all the staff at the LGI ward L51, PICU and surgeons for everything! Following an architectural trail of Leeds - there are plenty of delights. The shopping arcades are stunning, especially County Arcade, designed by theatre architect Frank Matcham. The earliest was Thornton Arcade in 1878, with the blue-painted ironwork. The round Corn Exchange has found a new lease of life as the home for independent shops. Over to the university to see the Grade II* listed Roger Stevens building, by the architects of London's Barbican, Chamberlin Powell & Bon, and the 'rusty nail' aka Broadcasting Place - very much a marmite building, love it or hate it. Back to the centre via George Gilbert Scott's Leeds General Infirmary, and the golden owl outside Leeds Civic Hall - owls are on Leeds' coat of arms and they pop up everywhere. Finally the lovely ceiling of the tiled hall at Leeds Art Gallery, now the cafe. On Friday, we went to @LeedsHospitals to install an @Xbox Series S Gaming Cart for the Adult Cardiac Ward @LeedsCongenitalHearts 🫀 When a young person hits 16, they transition from the Children's Ward to an Adult Ward. With very few entertainment facilities and no Play Specialist to support, there's no doubt that this transition can feel daunting. Handing over a cheque to the hospital that saved our son’s life. £137,000 raised for @leedshospcharity split between the following great causes: £65,000 - the purchase of 6 state of the art neonatal monitoring machines for Leeds General Infirmary £50,000 - The Rob Burrow MND appeal £22,000 - General funding to help all areas of Leeds Hospitals Trust I’m grateful to everyone who helped me make it happen. @theatlanticgrappler campaign was a solo ocean row but a team effort. Visiting the unit again was emotional and I felt humbled meeting the amazing doctors and nurses and staff who work tirelessly to help others. I said when I made land 6 months ago that I’d never row another ocean…. There is a plan brewing which would be huge for the charity and the city of #leeds if I can pull it off…. No chemo this week AGAIN! This is our 4th delay in this round. Platelets are up at 251 which is good but his neutrophils are 0.2 - hopefully another week off and we will be good to go next week. Leo has been fighting a viral infection this week so it was unlikely we would have been going ahead. It’s lovely having breaks from chemo as he is so much happier not taking all the medicines and having the side effects but we know he needs it to get better. When he’s not having it I worry the leukaemia will be having a field day and multiplying! 🥺 Hopefully we can get back on track next week and have the final week before his bone marrow. I started my training in 1980 at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge and I was taught all these things except one or two! Reading this makes me smile and feel so happy for my time as a student nurse. I remember trying to feel for a patients pulse one day and trying to look like I knew what I was doing, couldn’t feel a thing the patient clearly was alive and kicking as they were busy chatting to me!!! In this 75th anniversary year of the NHS, I reflect on the wonderful career I had working in healthcare. I recently came across this booklet while doing some spring cleaning for Mum. She started training as a nurse when the NHS was only 6 years old! Reading the things she had to master haven’t changed much it’s all the things that were then and remain true today about being a good nurse, caring for us when we are sick, feeling frightened and vulnerable, away from home and our normal environment, maybe in pain or discomfort. My mother continues to be a nurse even at 87! She always has her germolene, antihistamine the odd painkiller and an Elastoplast at the ready! I am the same always have my little first aid kit with me. It has and always will be the biggest honour and privilege to care for patients 💕I have loved every single day of my long nursing career. Charity shoutout to @millyssmiles We received our millys bag in our first week of been diagnosed with leukaemia. The hold-all is filled with so many hospital essentials. When we opened, it was definitely like Mary Poppins bag, the amount of thought out essential gifts is just WOW. Walking around the ward you see most parents bring the hold-all in as there hospital bag: there’s so many colourful blankets and neck pillows on children’s beds. Hangry and tired! Waiting for his lumbar puncture so had to fast from 7am. Leo decided yesterday wasn’t an eating day .. today he wants to eat everything. Meltdown central here, he’s lucky the window don’t open! 🤣 Running on 5 hours sleep he is shattered so hoping he sleeps until they call us down. Hospital update - we should be home Thursday 🤞🏻 he’s got to complete a 7 day course of antibiotics which are 4 times a day so can’t be done at home. He’s good in himself just irritable and cranky! We are still here .. we seem to be gradually going down hill rather than up hill. High heart rate - so needed monitoring - now back down HB - 2 false readings yesterday. This morning a count of 64. Anything under 70 requires a blood transfusion - so we had one today! Didn’t hit fluid intake yesterday so he went on a drip last night - he hasn’t weed a great amount so monitoring that. He spiked a temperature about 6am so more blood cultures taken. Worried he isn’t responding to the antibiotics he was on so changed. He’s now on 4 times a day which requires us to stay in hospital. He had a reaction to the antibiotics (they call it red man as he went red from top of his head down, a dose of piriton and all is good) Oh and to top it all the white fish in the hospital tank passed away last night. 🤦🏻♀️Leo was the one to spot him and raise the alarm at 1am. He now keeps asking for the white fish. Other than the above he is okay in himself, he’s playing, chattering away. Shouting lots and generally been a diva. Not where we wanted to spend the night but here we are. Clinic today for a blood transfusion and lumbar puncture after lots of waiting about and a hangry Leo kicking off we saw our consultant. The blood cultures they did after Saturday morning’s temperature spike visit have come back with bacteria in his line so antibiotics started until we know what we are dealing with. Lumbar puncture delayed, fingers crossed it’s just a short stay. Leo’s pleased to be back to see his best friend Skye on the ward and was smiley happy and high 5’ing the nurses who haven’t seen him since we got sent home at the beginning. #hospital #leedsgeneralinfirmary #ward31 #leukaemia #childhoodcancer

hristmas in a long time, even though every year I try make it special and memorable since Jensons diagnosis he has always been unwell, sleeping and in hospital over the Xmas period and unfortunately we’ve never really got to fully enjoy and embrace it. However this year he has been doing so well and it’s been so nice to finally enjoy and embrace it all, aswell as him been so into Xmas this year and been able to communicate what he would like from Santa ect it’s just been so beautiful and I’m so grateful for that, that’s the best gift I could have. This was Jensons very first day of Chemotherapy and I remember everything about that day like it was yesterday. The weather, the smells, the feelings. Even though it was a blur at the time it’s funny how things can just stay with you so vividly. They called me in for his biopsy results the day before and wanted him to start there and then but I just wasn’t ready, I hadn’t even had time to process any of it. I don’t know what it was but when I experienced my uncle going through chemotherapy and watching how it affected him and also seeing how chemotherapy had affected other people and their life’s, I’ve never had a positive outlook from chemotherapy. It’s toxic and Ive always been against it since seeing what it had already done to those I loved or knew. I don’t regret ever making the decision to go ahead with it though, as his mother I had to give him every fighting chance. I mean we was told he could possible be put onto palliative care weeks before. I did so much research from when we was told about his brain tumours, i wanted to make sure he was getting the best treatment not just in hospital but also at home to make him beat this, even though hospitals have to follow ‘protocols’ which is so annoying because it’s just damaging to our children (more definitely needs to be done when it comes to treatments and protocols) but when your in that position you’ll do just about anything. I got him an alkaline machine and changed his diet to all plant based (he had to have all purée) i cancelled my wifi (no joke) and got rid of the microwave, too many mobiles in the same room as him was a no go. Everyone was thinking I was going nuts but it made sense to me. I had him on multiple essential oils to help him and prepare him through chemotherapy I even did Bioressinance therapy but then they guy stopped treating Jenson 🤷♀️ not sure why.
