Nirvana - Unplugged in New York (1994). Maybe it was just another gig for the band, but to me, this is a thing of devastating, utter honesty and vulnerability. The chit-chat between songs is silly, but the performances are raw and pure. The best live album in my view. And some of the best covers ever recorded. Bowie, Lead Belly, Meat Puppets, ... Of course, Cobain cemented his iconic status by killing himself six months before the album was released, but regardless, this is a timeless piece of folksy rock. "Man Who Sold the World" Original - David Bowie (1970) Cover - Nirvana (1994) I wasn't ever a huge Nirvana fan, but their Unplugged album is an amazing piece of art. They recorded the performance on November 18th 1993 and did 14 songs straight through. Eight of the tunes were Nirvana originals, but only "Come as You Are" was a hit. They also did six covers, three from The Meat Puppets, a Vaselines tune, this David Bowie tune, and the showstopper to end all showstoppers, the Lead Belly arrangement of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" (This would have been my choice for this project, but I made a no "traditional" songs rule...this tune has it roots back to at least the 1870s, but doesn't have a true original author/performer). All of the covers Nirvana did for the Unplugged album are great, but went with their take on the Bowie tune. As Nirvana were known to do, they broke a few rules of the Unplugged concept. They didn't just play their hits with acoustic guitars...and Kurt was actually plugged in which can be heard clearly on this tune. The backstories of the recording are pretty fascinating look at the differences between the artist and the corporation. In this case, the artist was 100% correct. Their version of "Man Who Sold the World" introduced a new audience to the tune (myself included) and it keeps the iconic Mick Ronson guitar riff along with the bassline that almost sounds like Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman". Kurt's vocals sound very similar to David's original. He was a constant innovator and each album would build on his previous work, but never duplicated it. This tune came off of his third album and was not initially a success (the tune or album). It gained popularity through numerous well received covers including a version by Scottish singer Lulu in 1974, which included background vocals by Bowie himself. Bowie's version is based on the "circular" guitar riff from Mick Ronson and David's haunting lyrics and vocals. The theme of the tune is rather unsettling and has been compared to H.P. Lovecraft's horror-fantasy works and references the poem "Antigonish" by William Hughes Mearns - "As I was going up the stair I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish, I wish he'd stay away..." The earliest one is the Dutch Love You Til Tuesday (the first Bowie pic sleeve?!), then Ragazzo Solo (a bizarre Italian version of Space Oddity re-written as “Lonely Boy, Lonely Girl”), and the rest are from the early 70s. From various places, all original. I’m certainly missing quite a few from this period (I’d love to get Holy, Holy, Prettiest Star and Memory Of A Free Festival singles), but they’re not easy to find. The designers really came through on some of these, with the Portuguese Starman and Life On Mars winning the day. Still, the quest continues, although I’m really down to only a few dozen records (altogether, not just Bowie) that I really, really, really want to own before I pop the ol’ clogs. Which is everyone’s favourite Bowie single from this 67-72 period? Bowie memorabilia photo dump no. 1 ~ look closely before scrolling! What are these things? Ah, yes. They are reel-to-reel tapes of David’s second to fifth albums, issued by RCA in the US circa 1972. There’s also a reel of Aladdin Sane (which I don’t own - yet!!!) and I think that’s it for Bowie reels. Did the reel-to-reel market dry up by 1973? Who’s the expert on this, because it’s not me. These are truly beautiful, rare, strange and delightful objects but I no longer have a player to play them on. I’m sure I will at some point, to play all 20 tapes that I own… this is not a rabbit hole I need to go down. So for now, they are exquisite sculpture for the sacred alter of the music gods to which I worship. Music is religion.
