Ahhh back in my happy place with one of my favourite clients. Leading a meditation for busy corporate warriors. It’s the simple act of creating space for others that lights me up inside and reminds me why my own practise is integral to my own mental health. The commitment I made to continue to show up for myself so I can show up for others with integrity is always at the forefront of my mind. Talk the talk and walk the walk. This is me at @dharana_shillim where I went immediately after my ‘spiritual awakening’. That time I would say - was most pinnacle life changing time in my entire existence. Mentally I was on a superb high after leaving Nepal (where I had the awakening). I felt I could move mountains… But spiritual awakenings aren’t just a simple ride after the event. Like with everything in life there is a process. I knew I had a lot of work to do I could do and I didn’t feel the enormous task of the rest of my life could be done by me, alone. But I booked this short break after Nepal. I wanted more time to believe I could it myself alone. I have had years of sleep issues, difficulties with my mental health so going to a natural, holistic health resort was the perfect place. The focus and magic of Dharana is focused on the simple techniques that make the most difference in having a healthy life. It’s what my teachers and monks share with me as a foundation for a great life. At Dharana * sports and movement that suits every individual’s needs are arranged * Simple, clean eating is first priority * Time in nature surrounded by the huge acres of Indian forest is hard to escape from and entirely dreamy for the soul * Homegrown natural foods are all they have! Freshly grown and maintained on the grounds * Time to reflect, meditate and refocus is scheduled into each day * Healing sessions like Tibetan sound bowls were key to my schedule * Time with yogi’s and practising yoga was key * And most of all the magic of the place was in the people. I was shocked by this but it was the language, lifestyle and POSITIVITY of the entire staff that made the biggest impact on me. Dharana was a reminder to me of the importance of having a good foundation. If your emotions were not accepted in the past, if they were dismissed, vilified and invalidated, accepting and expressing those same emotions now can feel overwhelming and down right terrifying. And it’s okay if that’s the case because… …When did you ever learn about accepting emotions? When did you ever learn about how to feel them and express them in a healthy way? Working with our emotions is a skill. A skill that was never truly developed in us. So give yourself, time, grace and space as you now develop this skill. Start by simply welcoming in whatever emotion you are feeling, seeing if you can meet that emotion with curiosity as to why it is arising rather than judgement, see if you can offer yourself compassion rather than self criticism for the way you are feeling. Each time we make this subtle shift, we are bringing more and more acceptance to our emotional state, which was denied to us in the past. And in each small shift towards acceptance, we are breaking the cycle and creating change in real time.

It takes time for our nervous system to attune to its needs, to re-establish a sense of safety and rebuild its capacity to self regulate. We cannot force, rush or add pressure to this process. The best thing we can do is offer our nervous system the space, patience, compassion and time it was denied in the past as it moves down the healing path. Respect the natural pace of your healing process. Trust your body.

Emotions are the subtle orchestrators of our inner world, signaling our needs, desires, and fears. Yet we can often find ourselves reflexively turning away from them, seeking relief in the myriad of distractions that populate our daily lives. But what if we dared to linger in that space between impulse and action? What if we found the courage to face those emotions head-on, with open hearts and curious minds? Each emotion, whether joyous or sorrowful, holds within it a wealth of wisdom waiting to be unraveled and by courageously embracing them, we can embark on a journey of profound self-revelation, peeling back the layers of conditioned responses to reveal the essence of our true selves. A key question we can ask ourselves is when we begin to feel the pull of our distractions is…. “What emotion am I trying to avoid in this moment?” Or “What emotion is this distraction offering me relief from?”

If you want to do something difficult find a way to enjoy it and it becomes easy! Years ago I first practised meditation using the @headway_app and I loved it but somehow I stopped and life got in the way. It was here in Pharping, Nepal that I first started practising meditation “off my own back” knowing that I was starting a practise I would do from then on, on a daily basis for the rest of my life. Why I knew - I was starting a practise I would do daily is because it wasn’t a difficult, awful, or a hard to do thing. I didn’t feel stupid, or inept. Infact sitting was intuitive, easy and enjoyable. It came to me naturally to sit in meditation because I was so full of information I needed to contemplate on it in silence to process and make decisions. Even today, if I have a decision to make or something to work out I do the same thing, I sit (or lie down) and ask myself questions until I find the answer I need. This experience was transformative. I had a profound and deep realisation of self love. I realised for the first time during this experience that I was (and am) completely capable of looking after myself without help from another. With previous abandonment issues with my father having left when I was young and a mother who was emotionally incapable of giving me the love I needed this realisation was HUGGGGGGE! All I did to get there (2 years ago) was keep experimenting with different types of healing that intrigue me until I felt complete like I do today. This occasion was a quick visit to Bangkok 2 years ago to visit my mother. I thought it would be fun to take mother to experience water & sound healing. They combined vibrational sound healing by playing gongs nearby you which vibrate in the water whilst you float and are also gentle massaged. The feeling was like a return to the womb - complete nurturing. I am so grateful for this experience but more grateful for taking a leap of faith on myself. I used to work up to 18hrs a day, party all night, fight, FIGHT. FIGHTTTT for money, wealth, success, relationships, a nice house, cars, a cool career. The list goes on. But when I got everything I want - I realised. This was me 🙋🏼‍♂️ Our nervous systems are remarkable in their adaptability, designed to respond swiftly to perceived threats in our environment. However, when our systems become accustomed to a perpetual state of urgency and alertness, it can be incredibly challenging to shift gears and move out of this survival state and into a space that allows ourselves to slow down without guilt and judgement. This is something that has been a very challenging for me in the past. Taking time to slow down and rest felt incredibly unsafe. Any attempt to slow down would flood my system with anxiety and overwhelm. I would feel restless, not knowing how to truly relax. Perpetual action and motion felt like the only option to a nervous system like mine, that learnt to find safety by always doing and generated its sense of worth based on how many things it could tick off a to do list. You may resonate with this yourself? Slowing down therefore requires us to recalibrate our nervous systems, to begin the process of restoring a sense of safety within our system, so we can move out of these survival states and begin to rewire deeply ingrained patterns of behaviour and thought. It asks us to challenge the notion that our worth is tied solely to our ability to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines. It invites us to embrace moments of stillness, to allow ourselves the space to simply be, without the constant pressure to do more.

Just a snippet of pics from where I had my spiritual awakening. THANK GOD I decided to take a huuuge risk ON MYSELF and take a rogue, spontaneous trip to Nepal. Rewind a couple years and I was on a holiday where I heard the most beautiful sound I’d ever heard - it was from a Tibetan sound bowl. After hearing that sound came to understand it was designed for healing. SO I started healing myself by listening to the sounds of the Tibetan bowl. After a year or so, I felt better but still, something was missing! Frustrated, I researched a lot and found out the sound originated from somewhere in the himilayas, most likely Nepal. So I was very nervous when I almost landed on my in Nepal. I didn’t know it at the time but but I was about to have a transformation that would finally help me own my worth, embrace myself and fully love myself. I did it, you can too. Massage is one of the key things I do to stay focused in the present moment and keep my mental health steady. It sits closely with meditation, time in nature or exercise in terms of the benefit it has to my overall wellbeing. A 1hr break in day (especially when I have a busy schedule) can help me totally relax or realign if I might start to feel like I have a lot on. Even self massage can make so much difference to tension or stress. This is something I do regularly. You might be surprised to see that what you can see in these pictures is me meditating! If you’re new to meditation or want to start practising but aren’t sure how - start not by sitting down, but start by allowing yourself to be present. I find it easiest to tap into my meditation by being in nature. The more you practise the more you become able to do it and soon sitting to meditation will become effortless for you just like it is for me. To give you an example… On this morning, in Rishikesh I woke up waiting for the group of people who would join me on my hike @anandainthehimalayas . I was already in a semi state of wakeful meditation because I was relaxed. Then a peacock came nearby and I was able to start my practise of meditation. •I took some seeds - FOCUSING ON THAT ACTION - this is meditation •I enjoyed the moment of being with the peacock - FOCUSING on that MOMENT - this is meditation •We had breakfast available to us - I savoured and enjoyed every second, every sip, extra bite of my breakfast CONCENTRATING on what was happening - this is meditation •I walked all up the mountain - FOCUSING on what I’m doing - this is meditation •I enjoyed talking to the people in the group - this is meditation •I watched on as a few people had to stop or turn back - this is meditation I EMBRACED EVERY MILISECOND, EVERY SECONDS, EVERY UP AND DOWN OF THE MORNING BY BEING PRESENT. Being in the moment is all meditation is. This is living. If feel you aren’t in the present moment enough ask yourself. Am I Living? If the answer is no then keep exploring until the answer becomes yes. That’s what I did. For a long time I wasn’t able to share about my time in paris because I also struggled a lot (there were always strikes on, I did Covid lockdown alone there, I worked through relationship break ups too). I had a lot of personal growth to do. I have learnt the hard way that if I do not look after my physical health my mental health suffers. That’s why 6 months ago I visited @dharana_shillim . I booked a stay to prevent my health suffering around a busy work, family, travel schedule. I and was able to carry out a number of tests. In pic 2, you can see that whilst I’m ‘very’ healthy (with a metabolic age 14 years younger than my actual age & most stats in the green zone) my muscle mass was low. As you age, if you have low muscle mass you can suffer with joint, bone, back and other physical pains. If I suffer physical pain my daily functioning, MENTAL HEALTH, ability to work, ability to look after others becomes limited. As a nature lover I didn’t want to hit the gym more but because I needed to improve muscle mass • I made a goal to make sure I am in the gym consistently no less than 2-3 times a week • I worked on my mindset around not wanting to do muscle strengthening exercises • I worked on my limiting beliefs around strength training. Instead of focusing on cardio I shifted my beliefs from “cardio is best for my mental health” to “if I strength train, I can do more cardio & my entire health improves” • I strengthened on my self worth - I was able to shift my mindset from, “I’m not worthy of a healthy body” to “I can feel strong and healthy” so that I was able to do more strength based exercises • I took my mind from “this is difficult” to “I want to feel good” to be able to achieve my goal to be in the gym regularly Tap Link in bio for podcast on health! Pratyahara is the fifth limb of the eight limbs of yoga, as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. It refers to the withdrawal or control of the senses. Pratyahara involves consciously redirecting our attention inward, away from external distractions, to achieve a state of inner focus and calmness. By withdrawing the senses from external stimuli, practitioners aim to quiet the mind and prepare for deeper stages of meditation. During my personal practice, I always felt a surge of energy when I would practice  either yoga or meditation in a specific direction rather than otherwise. This awareness made me think if there was any connection between Vastu and Yoga 🧘‍♂️ After some google research, not to my surprise, there appeared tons of information on which direction we should face while practicing yoga. No wonder Google has answers for everything 😂 According to the ancient scriptures of Hinduism, it is traditional to face the east while practicing yoga. Facing the east during yoga practice is thought to help align one's energy with the positive, uplifting energy of the sun. However, it is also important to note that the direction in which one faces while practicing yoga is not as important as the intention and focus that one brings to their practice. The ideal direction to spread a yoga mat for dhyana or meditation is towards the north-of-north east as it is the zone associated with focus and clarity, which are essential to meditation. My curiosity further increased to find out if the color of the yoga mat would make a difference. The color of our yoga mat can also play a role in establishing an emotional connection during practice. It can be in all shades of blue as it promotes serenity and peace and is very cooling and soothing for most people. But of course, if you are drawn to a particular color that resonates with your emotions and practicing on a mat of that hue may enhance your overall experience, then definitely you must go for it! Ultimately, the most important thing is to find a comfortable and stable position that allows you to focus on your breath and stay present. And the most powerful tool at our disposal restore this flexibility……our breath 💨 The term “neurobiological flexibility” is often used in the context of mental health and well-being. It refers to the ability of the nervous system to appropriately respond to stressors, switch between different states (such as alertness and relaxation), and recover from challenging experiences. This flexibility is crucial for maintaining regulation, stability, emotional balance and overall adaptability. An overly hyper-reactive (fight and flight) or hypoactive (frozen) nervous system may lead to difficulties in coping with stress, managing overwhelm and meeting life’s demands, as the nervous system can become ‘stuck’ in one state, becoming rigid, tense and struggles to flow freely with life. Resorting flexibility in the nervous system is therefore a paramount and foundational step in the healing journey. A flexible nervous system enables us to navigate life’s ups and downs more effectively, bouncing back from stressors and maintaining a sense of equilibrium and most importantly restoring a sense of agency within, as we learn to take back conscious choice over our physical, mental and emotions states. We can use our breath here to help us restore flexibility to our nervous system, the breath offering us a dynamic tool that can guide our nervous system into states it is normally not accustomed to and through this process begin to slowly and safely teach the nervous system to flex freely between states as needed.
